Around the edges of the Aspire, you'll find the afore-mentioned Blu-ray drive, as well as four USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, VGA, FireWire, eSATA/USB 2.0, an SD card slot and microphone and speaker audio connections. The unit also has a fingerprint reader and a webcam. We wish it had an ExpressCard slot, which could come in handy if you ever want to add USB 3.0, for example, but overall it's a great set of features.

The drawback is that astonishing price. Admittedly, this is the bells-and-whistles specification of the Aspire 8943G, but that's still a lot of cash. The power partly justifies this and the feature set is impressive, but the issues with the screen and Touchpad leave us wary about spending such a massive sum on what is still essentially a laptop, albeit a monster of a one.

Acer's Aspire Ethos 8943G is a true desktop replacement. The quad-core processor, discrete graphics and extra-large screen work well together, creating a laptop that's as happy video-editing as it is gaming. Sure, the price tag is pretty high, but you certainly get a lot for your money and you'd be hard pushed to find similarly-specified alternatives that are any cheaper.

Aside from the wireless issue, the $1,599 Acer Aspire 8943G pleases with its combination of a clean, modern design and multimedia maven-pleasing features. Though the Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q890 is a better performer in the 18-inch category, it's less attractive and costs $1,899. If you're looking to save a little cash and don't need the extra power, the Aspire 8943G is a good choice. However, until Acer resolves the sporadic wireless connectivity, we can't recommend this system. We'll update our review once a fix from the company becomes available.

Acer’s done a good job with the Ethos – it looks great and performs well. Of course, the fast processor, large screen, Blu-ray drive and fancy design don’t come cheap, and many will baulk at the price tag Acer’s slapped on it. That said, it’s in line with similar 18.4in offerings, such as HP’s dv8-1110ea that retails for around the same price. If you want to ditch your desktop and can afford it, Acer’s Aspire Ethos 8943G is definitely worth a close look.

The Acer Aspire 8943G is a desktop replacement in an almost literal sense - you'll barely be able to see any desk behind it. A gigantic 18.4in display means the chassis measures 440mm across and weighs more than 4kg, so it's good for the occasional trip up and down the stairs at home but not much else.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850: Die HD 5850 ist eine High-End Grafikkarte und basiert auf die Desktop HD 5770 und ist eine um 11% langsamer getaktete Mobility 587. Nur mit GDDR5 wird der 128 Bit Speicherbus nicht zum Flaschenhals. Erste Benchmarks einer 5850 mit DDR3 zeigen lediglich eine Performance zwischen GTS250M und GTX260M.

Diese Grafikkarten sollten alle modernen Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Anspruchsvolle Spiele müssen jedoch in mittlerer Detailstufe gespielt werden. Ältere und weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele wie die Sims Serie können auch in hohen Detailsstufen flüssig dargestellt werden.

18.4": 18 Zoll Displaygrösse gibt es erst seit 2008 für Desktop-Replacements. Es gibt nur wenige Notebooks, die einen größeren Display haben als 17 Zoll. Allerdings gibt es auch ein paar Laptop-Displays, die noch größer sind. Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem. DTR sind hauptsächlich für stationären Schreibtischeinsatz vorgesehen, wo Gewicht und Energiehunger egal sind.

76.77%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
