Trotz einiger Mängel erreicht der Asus EeePC 1005PE einen guten Platz in unserer Netbook Top10. Verarbeitung, Ergonomie und Akkulaufzeit lassen die Punkte in die Höhe schießen. Das Chassis besitzt eine hohe Verwindungssteifigkeit und zuverlässige Scharniere. Das Touchpad entpuppt sich als guter Mausersatz und auch die Handballenauflage steht in einem guten Licht. Displayrahmen und Tastaturplatte könnten jedoch standhafter sein.

Mit dem Asus Eee PC 1005PE ändert Asus nicht viel am bestehenden Netbookkonzept der Seashell-Serie. Das Netbook bleibt wie auch die jüngsten Vorgänger kaum erweiterbar. Die Tasten der Tastatur sind nun freistehend jedoch unsauber verarbeitet. Pluspunkte sammelt der Asus Eee PC 1005PE hauptsächlich durch den neuen Atom-Prozessor. Der Atom N450 steigert nicht nur die Rechenleistung, sondern auch die Akkulaufzeit erhöht sich um einige Stunden. Der Preis für das Netbook der neuesten Generation hingegen sinkt auf 300 Euro.

Der Asus Eee PC 1005PE auf Basis der neuen Intel Pine Trail Plattform mit Intel Atom N450 Prozessor, im Prozessor integrierter Intel GMA 3150 Grafik und NM10 Chipsatz konnte in unserem Test größtenteils überzeugen. Die gestiegene Akkulaufzeit und der geringer Stromverbrauch sind erfreuliche Pluspunkte und mit einer maximalen Akkulaufzeit von 13 Stunden und 15 Minuten konnten die Herstellerangaben um Längen übertroffen werden.

ASUS offered some outstanding battery performance in their previous 1005HA but they have managed to improve on that with the PineTrail based Eee PC 1005PE. Users can expect to easily achieve over ten hours of running time in most applications. Unfortunately, the PineTrail platform doesn't really improve on the performance much and HD video support is still missing. Still, it is currently the best choice for those needing long running times and it doesn't hurt that it has an attractive design and comfortable keyboard.

Some may end up disappointed by the novelties brought upon us by Pine Trail, mainly because the advancement is the least where many would like - on the performance field. As we stated in the introduction, weak competition allows Intel to present improved solutions at a rather laid-back rate. Still, one should not be unrealistic and underrate the gain bestowed upon the user by the new Atom platform. If anything, a three-cell battery, cheaper and lighter than a six-cell one, in the netbook will now suffice for many.

Well, yes, there is that, but we were actually referring to the Eee PC 1005P -- one of the first netbooks to use Intel's next-generation Atom N450 CPU. The Eee PC 1005P is pretty much identical to its Eee PC 1005PE sibling, but sports a smaller hard drive and is slightly less expensive. It's still a fabulous piece of kit, though, and will appeal to anyone requiring a comfortable netbook with good stamina away from the mains.

Intel's latest update to its netbook platform certainly changes some things around, but it still lacks needed improvements in the graphics and video playback department. Of course, there's the stopgap solution of having the Broadcom Crystal HD companion chip to handle the needs of the HD playback, but it doesn't exactly speak well about the platform if it requires yet again an external solution to address this issue. NVIDIA's ION platform filled this gap marvelously, allowing for light gaming and HD playback, but at the cost of extra power consumption, of course.

Performance-wise, it functions like virtually every other netbook that’s been released since mid-2008. That said, if you’re in the market for a new netbook, the Eee PC 1005PE is a strong contender. It has an excellent keyboard and Touchpad, a slim and attractive design, and it offers decent performance for an Intel Atom powered netbook. The sub-$370 price tag doesn’t hurt either.

(Pine Trail, touted by Intel as a power-efficient core-component innovation for netbooks, incorporates the memory controller and graphics acceleration directly onto the CPU die.) Judging from this, the first Pine Trail-based netbook we've seen, the new chipset doesn’t improve performance to a great degree, but we’re seeing big improvements in battery life. Built around Intel’s new Pine Trail platform, this 10-inch netbook has a reasonable price, an excellent battery, and performance that slightly outstrips more expensive models.

If you've been waiting for Pine Trail netbooks hoping for noticeably better performance and graphics, you're not going to get it -- and the truth is you probably won't even notice the difference between the 1005PE and older Diamondville-based Eee PCs until you start using it on battery power alone. Though we're a bit disappointed in Pine Trail's minimal performance improvement, especially in terms of streaming 720p video content, that's not to say the $380 1005PE won't be a solid, affordable choice for those looking for a 10-inch netbook with seriously impressive battery life when it goes on sale January 4th. And when it comes to netbooks, Pine Trail or not, you can't really ask for much more.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150: Integrierte (shared memory) Grafikkarte welche im Prozessor Intel Atom N4xx integriert ist. Basiert laut Intel auf einen "optimierten" X3100 Kern, ist jedoch nur minimal schneller als der alte GMA 950. Daher für HD Videos und 3D Spiele nicht geeignet.

Diese Karten können nur ältere Spiel noch flüssig darstellen. Aktuelle höchstens mit erheblich reduzierten Details und geringer Auflösung. Die integrierten Grafikkarten haben den Vorteil von einem geringem Stromverbrauch (höhere Akkulaufzeit, weniger Abwärme) und sind für Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung, Videoschnitt ohne Einschränkungen geeignet.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order"  sondern  "in  Order"  ausgeführt  werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.

N450: Intel Atom CPU für Netbooks mit integriertem DDR2 Speichercontroller und GMA 3150 Grafik. Die Leistung ist nur etwas besser eine Kombination aus N270 / GMA950, jedoch ist der gesamte Stromverbrauch deutlich besser. 10.1": Es handelt sich um ein kleines Displayformat für Subnotebooks bzw. sind 10 Zoll das Standardformat für Netbooks. Der Vorteil der Mini-Notebooks liegt darin, dass das Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das vergleichsweise kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten relativ anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar wegen zu kleiner Schrift- und Icongröße.

1.27 kg: Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt nur wenige Sub-Notebooks/Netbooks, die noch leichter sind. 10 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

77.57%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Man muss bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen.
