Interest in ultraportable laptops has been growing recently, with both budget Eee PC clones and dearer premium featherweights generating headlines. The latest manufacturer to throw its hat into the ring is Asus, with the 1.3kg U2E. Classy looks and light weight make for a decent ultraportable, but it's got some tough competition.

The U2E is hands-down one of the best-looking ultraportables on the market. However, its closest rivals—the $3,098 MacBook Air and the $2,936 Lenovo ThinkPad X300—pack larger, 13-inch screens, better performance scores, and larger solid state drives, all for just a few hundred dollars more. Nevertheless, the U2E’s fashion-forward design, along with its small and light build, DVD burner, and array of ports, make it a first-class luxury business notebook.

Go on, run your hands along the Asus U2E's leather-trim exterior. This ultraportable laptop's luxurious cladding and long list of extras will make you feel like you're handling premium gear. But we found other things to like about the Asus U2E beyond its style. To begin with, the Asus U2E weighs just 1.25kg. It has a brilliant 1366-x-768-Pixel, 11in widescreen display. Like Sony's VAIO VGN-TZ295N ultraportable, the Asus U2E's screen is easy to view in tight spaces, although it lacks LED backlighting. The Asus U2E isn't as complete a package as the VAIO, but it is much cheaper, at a reasonable (for an ultraportable) £1,394 inc VAT. Fazit: The Asus U2E is a fun, stylish notebook, and its cowhide couture is bound to turn some heads, though perhaps not those of die-hard Apple fans.

The Asus U2E is one of the most impressive luxury business notebooks we've ever seen. Granted, the $2,000 price tag is more than most consumers are likely to consider ... but this isn't an ordinary laptop. Asus managed to create one of the smallest and lightest notebooks with a built-in optical drive and a build quality that is second to none. Add in the fact that the U2E still includes a reasonable number of ports and enough processing power to meet your mobile needs, and the U2E makes perfect sense for anyone considering a luxury ultraportable notebook. The black premium leather, metal accents, and a solid selection of included accessories give the U2E just enough of an edge to make the competition want to pay close attention. If you're in the market for a stylish, ultraportable laptop that makes a serious statement then the U2E might just be your perfect match.

The ASUS U2E is perhaps one of the best notebooks to hit the ultra-mobile market. Ever. By offering both solid performance for this segment, a list of features that exceeds machines much larger, size and weight that any road warrior would envy and battery life of nearly 8.5 hours ASUS is able to address nearly every concern for the mobile market; not to mention that it is simultaneously sexy and elegant. I have no doubt that the U2E will be incredibly popular and from my time testing it I can see no reason why it shouldn't be.

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G: Stark abgespeckte 8400M GS Grafikkarte mit geringem Speicherbus und nur der Hälfte an Stream Prozessoren. Die Spieleleistung wird dadurch sehr eingeschränkt. Nur MPEG-2 Videobeschleunigung.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders die DirectX 10 fähigen Vertreter (8400M, HD 2400) sind nicht in der Lage ihre DirectX 10 Effekte (bei hohen Details) flüssig darzustellen.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

11.1": Es handelt sich um ein relativ kleines Displayformat für Subnotebooks, das auch nicht sehr oft verwendet wird.

Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

1.3 kg: Dieses Subnotebook gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt nur wenige Sub-Notebooks, die noch leichter sind. 10 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

Asus: Asus ist ein internationaler Hersteller mittlerer Grösse. Im deutsch- und englischsprachigen Raum werden in jüngerer Zeit sehr viele Notebook-Modelle von Asustec getestet. Allerdings schafften es in diesen Tests bisher relativ wenige Modelle in Top-Positionen bzgl. Gesamtwertung und Preis/Leistungs-Bewertung.

79.2%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Man muss bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
