The More Things Change the more they stay the same. The ASUS U35Jc seems to be in many ways a series of trade-offs with the U30Jc, and that's disappointing because it really should have just been an improvement. The U35Jc sports a slightly faster processor, sheds a pound of weight thanks to ditching the optical drive, has a slimmer body, and marginally improved backlighting on the screen.

Let's be honest; 13.3in notebooks hit something of a sweet-spot, don't they? We've often felt that 13.3in notebooks hit a sweet-spot, and they seem to be getting sweeter by the day. ASUS's latest effort, the U35JC, is mighty close to offering it all. Both CPU and GPU performance is exceptional at this size, and the notebook manages to retain the other two must-have features; portability and a long-lasting battery.

From a pure performance perspective, the ASUS U35JC-A1 is right where I expect an ultraportable to fall. It has fantastic battery life, which is its stand out feature. The overall performance that the ASUS U35JC-A1 delivers makes it sort of like a B student. It has no glaring faults, but has no significant standout features either. In my mind, the ASUS U35JC-A1 and the Acer TimelineX 1830T I reviewed recently are a tossup. If you want more portability in a smaller size notebook, you can go with the 1830T. If you want more screen space and a slightly larger notebook, the ASUS U35JC-A1 is a good choice. The worst aspect of the ASUS U35JC-A1 would be its keyboard, which honestly isn’t that bad.

Well over a year ago, we found a hidden gem in the Asus UL30A, a very thin 13-inch laptop that had a great combination of performance, battery life, and price. A virtual successor to that UL30A can be found in the Asus U35Jc-A1, a Core i3 laptop with entry-level Nvidia GeForce 310M dedicated graphics and Nvidia Optimus automatically switching graphics. The Asus U35Jc-A1 is a thin, but solid, 13-inch laptop with no processor compromises and Nvidia Optimus graphics, covering all the basics--except an optical drive.

Aside from the keyboard, we were extremely impressed by the Asus U35JC-RX080V. Performance is excellent, and portability is the best here – beating some big names to the title. Yet the laptop remains cheaper than most of its competitors and, therefore, offers great value for money.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: Die GeForce 310M ist die Nachfolgerkarte der G 210M und technisch nur durch 30MHz mehr Shadertakt verschieden. Es gibt jedoch auch Versionen mit einem geringeren Kerntakt von 606 MHz.

Intel Core i3:

370M: Der Core i3-370M taktet etwas höher als der Core i5-430M, jedoch ohne Turbo Boost und geringer getaktete GPU. Dadurch läuft die CPU mit maximal 2.4 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). 

13.3: 13 Zoll ist ein häufiges, jedenfalls aber das grösste Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das verhältnismäßig kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten ein wenig anstrengend für die Augen ist. Sehr hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar. Nicht fehlsichtige Menschen sollten mit dieser Displaygröße aber zurechtkommen können.

82%: Diese Bewertung muss man eigentlich als durchschnittlich ansehen, denn es gibt etwa ebenso viele Notebooks mit besseren Beurteilungen wie Schlechteren. Die Verbalbeurteilungen klingen aber oft besser als sie wirklich sind, denn richtig gelästert wird über Notebooks eher selten. Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigen" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
