Mit dem Asus Bamboo bringt der Hersteller ein optisch einwandfreies Gerät auf den Markt. Die Bambusoberfläche ist individuell und wirkt in Kombination mit den silbernen Applikationen, edel. Der umweltfreundliche Eindruck wackelt im Hinblick auf den Stromverbrauch. Die Anwendungsleistung des Urwaldnotebooks kann sich sehen lassen. Ebenso leichtfüßig bewegte sich das U6V durch unseren Mobilitätstest.

Usually the choices here boil down to selecting between colour schemes, rounded versus non-rounded corners, how the status lights are implemented and what the keyboard looks like. There are plenty of twists and turns, but nothing that really makes one notebook look hugely different from the rest. If you want a notebook that looks very different and claims to have some extra environmental credentials, the U6V Bamboo might tick the boxes for you.

The Asus U6V is a fantastic high-end ultraportable, with the power to match far larger laptops. Its screen and connectivity are also great. Only the 3-cell battery life lets it down, so consider whether this is a flaw worth accepting.

The bamboo is an interesting experiment in notebook building, using a material we’d never expected to see in a laptop. Sadly, based on our expert committee of fashionistas, combined with our tinkering under the wood, the Bamboo is best left as an experiment rather than your new laptop. A select few, who absolutely must have a laptop that looks totally unlike all others, might buy the Bamboo just to be different, but for the rest of us, it’s not a very wood, errr, good buying decision.

They keyboard is nicely spaced with large enough keys to type on over extended periods of time.

Above the keyboard is a Power4Gear button and there’s a shortcut to the Webcam, which is built into the top of the screen. Unfortunately we found that the screen’s viewing angles are a little sub-par and the speakers aren’t the best around. They’re still ok for watching movies in bed, but not much more.

Priced at $1,649, the ASUS U6V is a dependable and stylish ultraportable that has enough oomph to keep things running smoothly, whether you’re blowing through spreadsheets or engaged in light gaming. Although we would’ve liked more business-minded security features and a 3G connection, the U6V is a compelling option for the business traveler who wants a fashionable, well-rounded machine. Just be sure to charge that second three-cell battery or splurge for the optional nine-cell battery if you want to do work from coast to coast.

The ASUS U6 ultraportable got a significant upgrade from the U6S to U6V series. Performance has improved thanks to the new Montevino platform with increased memory and storage space. The addition of an eSATA port for external storage is also a great addition. This is definitely one of the fastest ultraportables on the market.

It all comes down to money. If you can afford it, the £1,350 Asus U6V-2P001E probably won't disappoint. It's fairly stylish and a great performer - just keep in mind its excellent battery life (using the eight-cell) comes at the price of some of that style and portability.

In Spezifikationen zu diesem Notebook wird oft die Grafikkarte "9400M GS" angegeben. Eine solche existiert an sich aber nicht (Stand Sept. 08). Gelegentlich wird die Kombination aus 9300M GS und 9100M als 9400M GS bezeichnet, allerdings wäre das in diesem Fall unzulässig, weil das Gerät einen Intel Chipsatz verbaut hat.

NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS: Durch jediglich 8 Unified Shader, unterhalb der 9300M G angesiedelt. Durch die hohe Chiptaktung zeigt die Karte jedoch fast die selbe Performance. Unterstützt Hybrid-SLI mit HybridPower und GeForceBoost.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders die DirectX 10 fähigen Vertreter (9300M, HD 3400) sind nicht in der Lage ihre DirectX 10 Effekte (bei hohen Details) flüssig darzustellen.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

P8400: Der P8400 ist ein Mittelklasse-Dual-Core Prozessor der Core 2 Duo Reihe. Durch den TDP von 25W eignet sich die CPU auch für kleinere Notebooks. 12.1": Es handelt sich um ein relativ häufiges Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Es stellt die durchschnittliche Grösse für Subnotebooks dar. Netbooks dagegen haben noch kleinere Displays. Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Der kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten etwas anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar.

76.8%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Man muss bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen.
