Consumers who want a light, portable machine that won’t choke when taxed or die after a few hours without the power cord will appreciate this system. Though it isn’t as thin or as light as the MSI X340 (currently priced at $699), the UL30A easily outperforms it. The Acer Aspire Timeline 3810 is also a strong choice, and offers slightly better performance, but it costs $50 more and lasts about 2 hours less on a charge. The bottom line: At $799, the UL30A is a compelling value.

At just over $700 depending on configuration (our build had an MSRP of $799), it's really hard to not give this machine a serious look if you need a new ultraportable. This rig is far more capable and far more enjoyable to use than any netbook we've tested to date, even the ones that soared above the $500 mark. If you can save up a few more bucks, you'll thank yourself for snagging a CULV-based system over an Atom-based system. There's really no comparison when it comes down to it. We think a new bar has been set, and for just over $700, we think you'd be hard pressed to find a sleeker, more enjoyable rig to buy than the UL30.

Comes with very good looks and overall almost impeccable construction quality, decent autonomy and a good price for what it has to offer. It is actually quite hard to find a fault for the Asus UL30A . There are some minors ones i found though, but I’m quite picky and most won’t even notice them. All in all, i have to say again I’m really impressed by this device. From the chiclet style keyboard to the quality of the screen and the performance levels, everything is just as it should be. That’s why this UL30A is now on top of my ultra-portable notebooks list.

EN→DEThe ASUS UL30A-X1 is an alternative for those looking to get a highly portable laptop computer but don't want to sacrifice performance in a netbook. At $700, the system is still quite affordable yet provides a better experience with just as much battery life as some of the better netbooks. Some features were sacrificed for a lower price including a lower resolution webcam and a battery that gives the hinge side a fairly large profile. Overall though, it is a good system for the road warrior on a budget that doesn't want to spend on something like a MacBook Air.

Für 600 Euro gibt es derzeit kein Subnotebook mit einer solch langen Akkulaufzeit. Für den vergleichsweise günstigen Preis muss der Anwender jedoch Abstriche bei Monitor und Touchpad in Kauf nehmen. Der 13,3-Zoller von Asus hat die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt und spart Energie wo er nur kann. Weniger als 10 Watt beim Nichtstun im Office-Betrieb, so genügsam waren bisher nur Netbooks mit Intel Atom-Prozessor. Für einen 13,3-Zoller ist das ein Novum. Die sparsamen Komponenten wie Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 (1.30GHz) und DDR3-Arbeitsspeicher verhelfen dem UL30A zu einer fulminanten Idle-Akkulaufzeit von 15 Stunden. Selbst wenn wir realitätsnahe Kriterien anlegen, wie helle Bildschirmanzeige und ein aktives Surfen über Websites, erreichen wir über sieben Stunden. Für ein Subnotebook, das aktuell bereits ab 650 Euro zu haben ist, ist das eine gigantische Laufzeit.

Zuweilen ändert sich die Verarbeitung, auch wenn beide Notebooks Serienmodelle sind und UL30A mit Vornamen heißen. Während die Tester Anfang Oktober im schwarzen UL30A einen etwas instabilen Displayrahmen bemängelten, finden wir im silbernen Modell eine akzeptable Stabilität vor. Angesichts der geringen Stärke des Deckels, sollten Interessenten angemessene Erwartungen an die Biegsamkeit haben.

Mit dem UL30A hat Asus die guten Eigenschaften von Netbooks mit einem großen Display und mit viel mehr Leistung verknüpft. Der 13-Zoller besticht durch einen hohen Grad an Mobilität und ist zudem mit einer Tastatur in Normalgröße und einem starken Prozessor alltagstauglich. Die enorme Idle-Akkulaufzeit von knapp 17 Stunden ist schon für sich ein Novum. Realistisch sind 6,5 bis 7,5 Stunden beim Surfen, Schreiben und Mailen.

While it’s not as small or light as a typical netbook, this 12.1 inch laptop has a larger screen and keyboard and it performs CPU-intensive tasks like transcoding video. And the UL20A’s not that much bigger or heavier than some netbooks. Weighing in at about 3.5 pounds, it’s just 0.3 pounds heavier than the Asus Eee PC 1000H 10 inch netbook I’ve been using for the last year.

EN→DEThe ASUS UL20FT is a much-anticipated update to the popular UL20A. For just a few dollars more than the original price of the UL20A, the new UL20FT gives you a powerful Core i3 processor, a new 16:9 widescreen display and a larger hard drive. That said, this is an "evolutionary" update and not a "revolutionary" upgrade to last year's 12-inch thin and light laptop. The UL20FT still uses weak integrated graphics and lacks any high-speed data ports such as USB 3.0, eSATA, or an ExpressCard slot. Most people can live without an optical drive today, but if you care about watching DVDs on a flight then it might bother you that this laptop lacks a DVD drive. Still, for less than $650 the ASUS UL20FT makes perfect sense for students or adults who want a compact, lightweight laptop that won't break the bank.

Strong office-app performance makes the UL20FT-A1 a compelling, reasonably priced ultraportable for work. Note, though: The lackluster battery life could be a deal-breaker. Answering the call to greater austerity, low-cost ultraportable laptops, like the $649 Asus UL20FT-A1, have emerged to deliver adequate productivity-application performance without breaking the bank.

EN→DEThose looking for a lightweight yet effective ultraportable as a secondary travel system would be well served by the affordable ASUS UL20FT-A1. This 12.1-inch laptop offers solid performance thanks to the new Intel Core i3-330UM processor yet retains its compact dimensions and light weight. At just $650, it also makes it a nice step between a netbook and a more powerful full-featured laptop. Now ASUS just needs to fix the terrible trackpad button and up the RAM to a more reasonable 4GB.

EN→DEThe Asus UL20FT-A1 looks good and packs a punch, making it a tempting choice for those who want to travel light without sacrificing performance. However, the Touchpad button is pretty awful, nearly ruining the overall experience. Plus, for $629, we would hope for more than 4.5 hours of endurance. When it comes to inexpensive 12-inch systems, we think the Asus Eee PC 1215N is a better value. It offers a much larger Touchpad, more comfortable mouse button, and drastically better graphics performance for just $499. Sure, the UL20FT has a more premium feel and does a better job of resisting fingerprints, but we'd much rather carry around a cloth than an external mouse.

Im Geschäftsbereich mit dem Markennamen Asus fertigt das Unternehmen Notebooks, Komplettsysteme und PC-Bauteile für Endkunden. Asus betreibt Niederlassungen in Deutschland, Italien, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Spanien, Russland und den USA sowie ein europäisches Servicecenter in Tschechien. Mit dem Eee PC hat Asus 2008 den Netbook-Boom ausgelöst.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: Im GL40 oder GS40 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Technisch eine geringer getaktete GMA 4500MHD (400 MHz versus 533) und durch den geringeren Takt auch kein BlueRay Logo Support.
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

Intel Core 2 Solo: Nachfolger des Core Solo und technisch ein Core 2 Duo mit nur einem Kern. Soll ab dem 3. Quartal 2007 für Notebooks erscheinen und ausschließlich als Ultra Low Voltage (ULV), also mit sehr geringer Kernspannung (=sparsam) erhältlich sein.
SU3500: Sparsamer Einzelkernprozessor mit allen Features und Stromsparfunktionen des Penryn Kerns. Aufgrund der geringen Taktung realtiv langsam aber sehr stromsparend.
Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.
Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.
SU7300: Langsam getakteter Core 2 Duo Prozessor mit 3 MB Level 2 Cache und geringem TDP von 10 Watt.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: Abgespeckter Core Duo mit nur 1MB L2 Cache
SU4100: Einstiegs Stromspar Doppelkernprozessor mit realtiv geringer Leistung durch die geringe Taktung. Durch die Pentium Marke, bietet der SU4100 ev. eingeschränkte Stromsparmechanismen.
Intel Celeron Dual-Core: Die Intel Celeron Dual-Core Familie beinhaltet preisgünstige Dual Core Prozessoren für Einsteiger-Laptops. Im Vergleich zu den Core (2) Duo und Pentium Dual-Core Modellen, besitzen die Celeron Dual-Core deutlich weniger L2 Cache (dadurch verringerte Performance).
SU2300: Einstiegs-Doppelkernprozessor für kleine und flache Notebooks. Geringe Performance durch geringe Taktung und abgespeckte Stromsparfunktionen durch die Celeron Serie.
Intel Core i3:
330UM: Der Core i3-330UM ist ein sehr sparsamer Ultra Low Voltage Prozessor ohne Turbo Boost und AES Funktionen (Unterschied zu den i5 und i7 UM CPUs). Dank Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 133-500 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller für DDR3 800.
12.1: Es handelt sich um ein relativ häufiges Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Es stellt die durchschnittliche Grösse für Subnotebooks dar. Netbooks dagegen haben noch kleinere Displays. Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Der kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten etwas anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar.

Nicht fehlsichtige Menschen sollten mit dieser Displaygröße aber zurechtkommen können.

15.6: 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für fast die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Diese Subnotebook/Netbook ist deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, und stellen eine mittlere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 11 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
79.87%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
