Mit dem MacBook Air teilt das Asus UL50AG die Leidenschaft für die Farbe silber und einen schlanken Körperbau. Der wesentlich günstigere Preis hat aber auch seine Schattenseiten. So gibt das Gehäuse deutlich stärker nach und die Tastatur klappert minimal. Tragisch ist dies jedoch alles nicht, auf der Haben-Seite locken nämlich ein leiser Betrieb, eine gute Leistung und ein ausdauernder Akku. An Anschlüssen darf der Nutzer - wie beim Apple Gerät - nicht zuviel erwarten, FireWire, SPDIF oder eSATA gibt es zum Beispiel nicht.

Das Asus UL50VG erreicht ganz knapp die Note SEHR GUT. Während der 15.6-Zoller bei Verarbeitung und Display kaum Punkte gewinnt, so kann er bei Leistung, Mobilität und Ergonomie viele Punkte sammeln. Der Prozessor gibt volle Power und ist von Werk an leicht übertaktet (1.34 statt 1.30 GHz). Diese Tatsache bringt dem Asus einige Punkte ein, ebenso die schnelle Festplatte. Die Seagate HDD mit 66,6 MByte/s (Sequential Read) ist eine der schnellsten Festplatten, die wir in unserer Datenbank bei Office-Notebooks verzeichnen.

Unfortunately the manufacturer’s claims usually need to be taken with hefty pinch of salt, and as ever that proves to be the case here despite the high-capacity eight-cell (5,600mAh, 84Wh) battery. With its UL50Vg, Asus has created an impressive laptop that uses a range of technologies to offer a rare combination of power and portability for a very reasonable price. This makes it even more of a pity that some ill-considered design choices hold it back from a recommendation.

Nach fast zwei Wochen verlässt uns das Asus UL50Vt-XO037V nun wieder und es bleibt ein größtenteils positiver Eindruck zurück. Das Gehäuse ist sehr schick auch wenn es kleine Schwachstellen wie etwa den Tastaturbereich aufweist. Die Anschlussvielfalt ist, wie bei einem Multimedia-Notebook zu erwarten, völlig ausreichend. Der 15,6-Zoll-Bildschirm erfüllt die HD-Ready-Anforderungen und bietet ein gutes Bild, obwohl es ihm an Kontrast fehlt und das Schwarz eher Grau wirkt. Positiv: Mattest Display für ein reflexionsfreies Bild.

Auch wenn Asus bisher nicht durch schicke Design Notebooks im niedrigen Preissegment aufgefallen ist, macht der Hersteller auf Anhieb fast alles richtig. Von der etwas klapprigen Tastatur kann man absehen, dafür überzeugen das Metall-Gehäuse und das flache und edel wirkende Design viel zu sehr. Aber auch die inneren Werte stimmen: Ein anständiger Core 2 Duo Prozessor in Verbindung mit schnellem Arbeitsspeicher ermöglichen eine tolle Arbeitsgeschwindigkeit.

Das Asus UL50VF-A1 ist ein flaches und relativ leichtes 15.6" Multimedia-Notebook. Der Aluminiumdeckel wertet das Gehäuse des UL50 deutlich auf und ist ein deutlicher Pluspunkt. Die Hochglanzoberflächen auf der Innenseite sind jedoch praktisch immer verschmiert und eher als unnützer Modetrend einzustufen. Das spiegelnde 15.6" Display ist der Schwachpunkt des Notebooks, denn es weist nur geringe Kontraste und Blickwinkel auf.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders die DirectX 10 fähigen Vertreter (9300M, HD 3400) sind nicht in der Lage ihre DirectX 10 Effekte (bei hohen Details) flüssig darzustellen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.
