Der klare Testsieger heißt Asus UL80VT: Das ULV-Notebook ist zwar etwas schwerer als die Geräte von Dell und Toshiba, dafür aber schneller, besser ausgestattet und zudem ein echter Langläufer. Das Toshiba ist interessant, wenn man nicht spielen will, denn es ist leichter und billiger als das Asus und kommt auch sehr weit mit einer Akkuladung. Hier war das Dell eine leichte Enttäuschung, denn der Akku gibt hier schon nach der halben Zeit auf.

We've already discussed our thoughts on the UL80Vt and G51J - you can read the details on pages two and three. Both are great laptops, and while we didn't give either the coveted Gold award they are closer than we've come in quite some time. For those that are wondering, anything earning a Bronze Editors' Choice is (at least in my mind) a 90% score; Silver means 93%, and Gold means 95% or higher. Basically, Gold awards are reserved for unequivocal recommendations, and we do have a few minor complaints with both of these laptops, mostly oriented around the LCDs.

ASUS' UL80Vt is a 14in notebook that's built for people who want plenty of features and good speed, yet want a laptop that's reasonably light and capable of lasting a long time away from a power outlet. If a reasonably thin and light notebook with excellent battery life sounds like your cup of tea, then the ASUS UL80Vt is for you. At 14in it's easy to use, yet not a burden to carry around. It's well built, looks good and performs well, but it does lack some connectivity options such as eSATA.

The UL80Vt isn't perfect though. While the keyboard was stellar and the multi-touch aspect of the trackpad were a plus, we still aren't into the dimpled pad and the glossy LCD. For those working outdoors, this screen could potentially be a major nuisance. Also, the relatively low 1366x768 resolution is nothing to write home about, and the slower 5400rpm (320GB) hard drive isn't all that quick when it comes time to boot or load applications for the first time. Still, we think the positives far outweigh the negatives when all things are considered. For just over $800, this is a really well-rounded machine.

Of the numerous 14-inch Optimus notebooks we've reviewed so far, the ASUS UL80Jt stands out as one of the best. For $869, you get excellent endurance for a system this size without sacrificing too much performance. But if all-day mobility trumps gaming prowess, then the UL80Jt is the way to go.

This ultraportable laptop has a higher price ($849) than many similarly specced competitors, though it's in the same ballpark as its $800 stablemate, the Asus UL30A. So how does Asus justify the price tag? The UL80Vt-A1 covers its base respectably. Strong battery life and surprisingly responsive performance give Asus's latest rig two solid legs to stand on. The only major drawbacks here are the price and that wretched mouse.

At first glance, there's a lot to like about the thin Asus UL80J-BBK5. A 14-inch screen, Core i3 processor, Nvidia Optimus graphics switching, and a DVD burner suggest a complete package in one of the thinner mainstream laptops we've seen, all for $799. The thin design and Nvidia Optimus automatic graphics switching on the Asus UL80J-BBK5 are appealing, but the underperforming CPU and battery life on this compact 14-incher are disappointments.

I wasn’t at AnandTech when Jarred first looked at the UL80 last year, but I was basically of the same opinion in that it was a nice display away from being a Gold Editor’s Choice unit. Seeing a notebook with the ability to combine a dedicated graphics card, 10+ hours of battery life, and decent overall application and gaming performance into a thin and light enclosure was very exciting, in that it was a combination that was rarely seen before, especially at a reasonable price.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

NVIDIA GeForce G210M: Die GeForce G210M besitzt, wie die alte GeForce G 110M 16 Shaderkerne jedoch konnte sie dank 40nm Prozess bei selben Stromverbrauch deutlich höher getaktet werden (bei um 50% verringertem Stromverbrauch ohne Last).

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: Die GeForce 310M ist die Nachfolgerkarte der G 210M und technisch nur durch 30MHz mehr Shadertakt verschieden. Es gibt jedoch auch Versionen mit einem geringeren Kerntakt von 606 MHz.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

14.0: 14 Zoll Display-Grösse stellt ein Mittelding zwischen den kleinen Subnotebook-Formaten und dem 15 Zoll-Standard-Display dar. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigen" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
