So what kind of internals does the 1545 hide under its plain but glossy shell for its bargain price? Well, they're actually a little better than you might expect. The cast is LED by an Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 running at 2.0GHz with an 800MHz front-side bus. This is fast enough to easily handle any software you'd want to use on a notebook like this. As to memory, 3GB of DDR2 RAM is as much as the installed 32-bit version of Windows Vista Premium can handle. In a nutshell: if you're looking for a cheap and simple family laptop with reasonable speakers, the Dell Inspiron 1545 is worth considering. However, appalling battery life really hampers an otherwise solid but unspectacular effort that is inferior to the model it replaces.

Dell periodically gives the series a physical makeover, but small differences in fit and finish are almost beside the point; this is still the go-to laptop line for reasonably priced systems that offer mainstream performance at palatable prices.Dell's updated Inspiron line has a slightly revamped design, but more importantly still offers workhorse performance for a minimal investment.

This means that Dell really need to impress from the moment someone sees the system and in our opinion they have succeeded in this area. Dell's Inspiron 15R N5010 is a 15in notebook with an appealing design and a well rounded configuration. Plenty of RAM and hard drive space make the Dell Inspiron 15R N5010 a good option for anyone who wants a notebook that can also be used as a desktop replacement computer. However, its build quality could be better, as we noticed some annoying creaking in its base, and its screen suffered from shimmering when viewed from certain angles.

You also get a strong feature set, including all the wireless options you could want, a sizeable hard drive, and a Blu-ray drive. Lackluster graphics and battery performance hold it back, however. If you want a powerful 15-inch desktop replacement laptop with gaming chops, the latest technology, and a longer battery life, the Editors' Choice Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) is still your best bet, albeit a pricier one.

Dell: Dell ist ein US-amerikanischer Hersteller (Sitz Texas) von Computer-Hardware  und gehört zu den grössten internationalen Herstellern sowohl in Bezug auf Marktanteile als auch hinsichtlich Notebook-Modellen, die im deutsch- und englisch-sprachigen Raum getestet wurden. Dell ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 16,4 % Marktanteil der weltweit zweitgrößte Hersteller von Personal Computern (HP 18,9 %, Acer 9,9 %, Lenovo 7,5 %). In Deutschland liegt Dell mit einem Marktanteil von 13,2 % derzeit auf Platz drei. Dell erzielte 2007 einen Umsatz von 61 Milliarden US-Dollar und beschäftigt etwa 80.000 Mitarbeiter weltweit. Die Produktpalette umfasst unter anderem PCs, Notebooks, Speichersysteme, Monitore, Server, Drucker sowie Unterhaltungselektronik. Dell vertreibt seine Produkte vorwiegend direkt. Kunden haben die Möglichkeit, per Internet, Fax oder telefonisch zu bestellen. Die Produkte werden erst zusammengestellt, nachdem der Kunde seine Bestellung aufgegeben hat.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330: Geringer getaktete Mobility Radeon 4530. Unterstützt Avivo HD und DirectX 10.1.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T6400:

SU7300: Langsam getakteter Core 2 Duo Prozessor mit 3 MB Level 2 Cache und geringem TDP von 10 Watt.

Intel Core i3:

330M: Der Core i3-330M ist ein Mittelklasse Dual-Core Prozessor ohne Turbo Boost Modus. Daher läuft die CPU mit max. 2.13 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: Abgespeckter Core Duo mit nur 1MB L2 Cache

T4400: Der Intel Pentium T4400 ist ein Dual-Core Einstiegs-Mittelklasse Prozessor von Intel mit jediglich 1 MB Level 2 Cache und ohne Virtualisierungsfunktionen. Dem T4400 fehlen im Vergleich zur Core 2 Duo Linie auch einige Stromsparfunktionen.

Intel Core i5:

480M: Schneller Mittelklasse Doppelkernprozessor mit HyperThreading (4 Threads gleichzeitig abarbeitbar) aber ohne AES Funktionen.

15.6: 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für fast die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

73.77%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
