The world needs more midsize, midprice laptops that match Windows 8 with a touch screen. And, if they can work in a slim optical drive, as in the case of the Dell Inspiron 15z, all the better. But, once you get close to that magic $1,000 mark (this 15z is $899), your options become very wide, and an upgraded Inspiron, still stuck with a low-res screen, may not be your top choice.

Dell's retooling of their Inspiron 15 may sacrifice a bit of performance but ends up with a platform that is not only very affordable but gives it an advantage over the competition. The system is thinner and lighter than most while including features such as Bluetooth and more USB 3.0 ports. Most buyer's will probably not notice the slight reduction in performance but the glossy exterior that seems to attract fingerprints and smudges is bothersome to frequently clean.

Dell ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 16,4 % Marktanteil der weltweit zweitgrößte Hersteller von Personal Computern (HP 18,9 %, Acer 9,9 %, Lenovo 7,5 %). Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen. Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330: Geringer getaktete Mobility Radeon 4530. Unterstützt Avivo HD und DirectX 10.1.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.
Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: In Sandy Bridge Prozessoren (Core ix-2xxx) integrierte Grafikkarte von Intel. Stärkere GT2 genannte Version mit 12 Execution Units (EUs). Je nach Modell mit unterschiedlichen Taktraten (350-650MHz) und TurboBoost Unterstützung (900-1350MHz).
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M: Entweder umbenannte GeForce GT 540M / 550M Grafikkarte oder 28nm GF117 basierend.
AMD Radeon HD 7670M: Umbenannte Radeon HD 6650M und dadurch noch in 40nm gefertigt.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.
Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.
T6400:
Einstiegs-Doppelkernprozessor basierend auf den Penryn Kern mit nur 2 MB Level 2 Cache und geringer Taktrate.
SU7300: Langsam getakteter Core 2 Duo Prozessor mit 3 MB Level 2 Cache und geringem TDP von 10 Watt.
Intel Core i3:
330M: Der Core i3-330M ist ein Mittelklasse Dual-Core Prozessor ohne Turbo Boost Modus. Daher läuft die CPU mit max. 2.13 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.
2350M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Doppelkernprozessor ohne Turbo (max 2.3 GHz) mit integrierter HD Graphics 3000 Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
3217U:
Stromspar-Doppelkernprozessor mit nur 1.8 GHz Basisfrequenz. Integriert die Intel HD Graphics 4000 (jedoch nur mit 350 - 1050 MHz Taktung) und einen DDR3-1600 Speicherkontroller.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: Abgespeckter Core Duo mit nur 1MB L2 Cache
T4400: Der Intel Pentium T4400 ist ein Dual-Core Einstiegs-Mittelklasse Prozessor von Intel mit jediglich 1 MB Level 2 Cache und ohne Virtualisierungsfunktionen. Dem T4400 fehlen im Vergleich zur Core 2 Duo Linie auch einige Stromsparfunktionen.
Intel Core i5:
480M: Schneller Mittelklasse Doppelkernprozessor mit HyperThreading (4 Threads gleichzeitig abarbeitbar) aber ohne AES Funktionen.
3317U:
Stromspar-Doppelkernprozessor mit nur 1.7 GHz Basisfrequenz aber einem Turbo bis zu 2.6 GHz (bei ausreichender Kühlung). Integriert die Intel HD Graphics 4000 (jedoch nur mit 350 - 1050 MHz Taktung) und einen DDR3-1600 Speicherkontroller.
15.6: 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für fast die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
73.72%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
