Fazit: Overall, I'm very pleased with the choice that I've made. To be honest, I almost returned it twice - once when I heard about the launch of Dell's XPS M1210, and again when the MacBook was launched. I'm glad I decided to keep it, as the MacBook seems to be having a number of issues with heat and I wouldn't be surprised if both fall short in terms of battery life. Unfortunately it seems Dell has pulled the 710m from their lineup on the Canadian site, hopefully to be replaced by another ultraportable (though most likely only to be replaced by the XPS M1210).

Fazit: Sometimes, small things can pack a big punch. The Dell Inspiron 710m measures a compact 11.7 x 8.5 x 1.5 inches, but it offers snappy performance behind its 2-GHz Pentium M 755 processor, which is complemented by 512MB of memory and a 5,400-rpm 80GB hard drive. As a result, the 710m is recommended for those always on the go who refuse to sacrifice power in the quest for a thin-and-light notebook. The 710m’s 12.1-inch screen is a widescreen model with a glossy finish that makes colors more vivid. We found this notebook to be the perfect mobile DVD player. The integrated stereo speakers sound tinny, but they’re surprisingly loud for such a small notebook. The optical drive installed in the 710m is a DVD burner, so you can create your own movies, as well.

Fazit: Aside from a new color scheme, the Dell Inspiron 710m is an exact replica of its thin-and-light predecessor, the Inspiron 700m. An eminently portable laptop, the 710m is conveniently compact and stocked with a high-capacity cell; our $1,699 test unit delivered more than five hours of battery life. Dell has not updated the system's components, however, and its competitors offer more features for the money. Students, small-business people, and home users looking for a thin-and-light should check out the similarly priced Sony VAIO S series or the extremely inexpensive Averatec 3715.

Intel Extreme Graphics 2: Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (852 / 855 GM, GME, GMV Chipsatz) (Codename Montara) ist eine onboard integrierte Grafiklösung für Centrino, Pentium 4 und Celeron basierte Laptops und ist eine der leistungsschwächsten mobilen Grafiklösungen. Sie ist nicht spieletauglich. Für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen reicht es aber meist.

Intel Pentium M: Intel Pentium M ist verglichen mit anderen Prozessoren sehr schnell pro Megahertz und sehr genügsam. Er ist sehr gut bei Integer (Ganzzahlen), hat jedoch leichte Schwächen bei Floating Point (Gleitzahlen) Berechnungen. 2005 war er der bei weitem häufigsten genutzte Mobilprozessor, da er sich für fast alle Anwendungen und auch Subnotebooks eignet.

12.1": Es handelt sich um das häufigste Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Es stellt die durchschnittliche Grösse für Subnotebooks dar.

Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.
