Fazit: The Latitude ATG D620 is really going to appeal to companies that deploy Dell Latitude notebooks to office workers, but also need a solution for field workers. Until now, a utility company that used Latitude D620 notebooks for their desk bound energy traders would have to buy laptops from a different company for their crew out repairing downed wires. Now the IT shop can deploy ATG D620 notebooks to those field workers and use the same image and consistent equipment and peripherals. This will save on costs and headaches.

Fazit: Think of Dell business laptops and you might get an image of white-collar workers sitting in an office or aboard a plane, typing away in a comfortable indoor environment. But in situations where someone needs to work outdoors or anywhere that's exposed to dust or harsh weather, an ordinary laptop probably won't cut it. You need something tougher. The Dell Latitude ATG D620 ($3,126 direct) is Dell's first attempt at the semi-rugged space. Its outer casing has additional padding to withstand dust, spills, and a heap of other outdoor accidents. Just prepare to pay a pretty penny for such protection.

With its sturdy case, data protection features, and ultrabright display, plus optional mobile broadband, this system should satisfy demanding field workers and anyone else who needs a fast Core 2 Duo notebook that can take a beating. But what separates this laptop from its competitors is the peace of mind that comes from having the same drive image and docking solutions as other Dell portables.

Dell hopes to energize the rugged laptop market with its first such model, the Latitude ATG D620. Rather than designing a new system from the ground up, the $2,499 Dell ATG--our review unit configuration cost $3,145--is a beefed-up version of the popular Latitude D620 laptop, adding a new outer case, a shock-mounted hard drive, and other heavy-duty extras, which tack about $1,000 onto the price of a similar, nonrugged Latitude D620.

Fazit: Dell knows how to build great notebooks, and the Latitude D620 that this ATG model is based on is a great machine. However, even with the super-bright screen, shock resistant hard disk and solid steel hinges, this doesn’t really feel like a rugged machine in the way the ToughBook CF-74 does, and that’s not even a fully rugged ToughBook! If you’re just looking for a version of the D620 that you can use out in bright sunlight, then the ATG will fit the bill, but don’t go thinking that it will survive life out in the desert or continual drops on the floor. If Dell puts enough resource behind this market sector, I have no doubt that it could come up with a compelling alternative to the ToughBook, but this first generation ATG isn’t it.

Fazit: Dell's first effort at a rugged notebook is a qualified success. It's certainly well built, and in spite of the lack of official statistics we're happy it will stand up to far more abuse than the average notebook. It's debatable whether its semi-rugged status will truly allow it to be used for mission-critical applications, but the price is appealing. And if you simply want a laptop that will last for thousands of miles, the ATG fits the bill. A good first stab at the semi-ruggedised laptop market. It isn't up to the tough standards of others, though.

Fazit: Als erster Hersteller neben Panasonic verscuht Dell sich jetzt an so genannten Semi-Rugged-Notebooks. Das ATG hält die Balance zwischen tragbarkeit und Widerstandsfähigkeit - der Preis dafür ist allerdings hoch.

Kleines Gerät fürs Grobe

Fazit: Obwohl das Dell Latitude D620 ATG extreme Bedingungen mitmacht, eignet es sich auch für normale Anwender. Denn selbst wo bei anderen Notebooks guter Rat teuer wird, wenn das Gerät herunterfällt oder widrigen Situationen ausgesetzt ist, arbeitet es noch ungehindert weiter. Natürlich gibt es auch hier Grenzen, nur liegen diese deutlich höher als bei gewöhnlichen "Taschen-Rechnern". Mehrkosten von etwa 300 Euro gegenüber dem Standardmodell sind für das zusätzliche Maß an Sicherheit nicht zu viel verlangt. Neben viel Systemleistung erhält der Käufer noch ein vorbildlich helles Display und alle gängigen Möglichkeiten für schnurloses und verkabeltes Netzwerken.

Dell Latitude ATG Is The Ultimate In Durability

Fazit: The Dell Latitude ATG is the first ultra-durable laptop from Dell. It comes equipped with everything that a rugged, outdoor laptop owner would need. For starters, it has a magnesium-alloy shell with a shock-mounted hard drive. This is important because when you drop your laptop when it's on your hard drive is the most vulnerable part to be damaged. It also has scratch resistant paint to help protect you from all of your little adventures. And with the outdoors in mind, you are going to need a screen that you will be able to see. Have you ever taken a laptop outside, just to find yourself squinting your eyes because you can barely see anything? That probably is taken care of with the ultrabright display. It is two and a half times brighter then it's very similar Dell Latitude D620. You certainly won't have any problems seeing this laptop outdoors. But what if it's dark outside? No need to worry there either.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 ist ein onboard integrierter Grafikchip und kann als schneller getakteter GMA 900 bezeichnet werden (auf Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipsatz, erst ab Core Duo/Solo verfügbar). 2006 ist es die meistgenutzte Grafiklösung und gehört zum leistungsschwächsten Drittel mobiler Grafiklösungen, kann daher nur für ältere Spiele sinvoll eingesetzt werden. Für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen reicht es aber ohne Probleme.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Der Core 2 Duo ist ein Nachfolger von Core Duo und Core Solo mit längerer Pipeline und bis zu 20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs ohne mehr Strom zu verbrauchen. 64-Bit EM64T Befehlserweiterung und 2 oder 4MB L2 Cache zeichnen den Prozessor mit seinen 291 Millionen Transistoren, die in 65 nm gefertig werden, aus.

T7200: Die "T" Varianten des Core 2 Duo sind die Standardversion in Notebooks. Sie brauchen weniger Strom als die "E", aber mehr Strom als die "L" (Low Voltage) und "U" ( Ultra Low Voltage) Varianten.
T7200 ist eine T Variante mittlerer Geschwindigkeit.

14.1": 14 Zoll Display-Grösse stellt ein Mittelding zwischen den kleinen Subnotebook-Formaten und dem 15 Zoll-Standard-Display dar.
