We were impressed with the Alienware M9750, but we’re even more impressed that the P-171 has all-around better hardware, and costs $1,500 less. It’s truly a remarkable achievement to offer this much power at a reasonable price point. Even better, Gateway is also offering two other FX notebook models with slightly lower specs for $2K and $1600, which is crazy affordable for a gaming notebook. Though we don’t like the lame trialware Gateway includes with the notebook it’s nothing 30 minutes of cleanup won’t fix. And we’d also like to see a DVI-out port instead of the legacy VGA port, though the inclusion of an HDMI connector is a nice touch.

Three thousand dollars might sound expensive for any laptop, but when you consider the $600 CPU and the even pricier graphics card, the Gateway P-171XL FX doesn't seem like such a bad deal. If you're a gamer on a tight budget, you can always go with lower-priced alternatives, such as the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 ($2,499) or the ASUS G2S ($1,850). Or you could really trick it out by going with my Editors' Choice, the Dell XPS M1730 ($4,024). But for those gamers whose budgets fall somewhere in between, the Gateway P-171XL FX has a good balance of premium parts and price for a gaming laptop.

Pricing in at $2,999, our Gateway P-171XL FX Edition review model is priced towards the middle of the gaming notebook segment, with the Toshiba X205 coming in at $2,000 and the Dell M1730 starting at $3,538 for a system with similar capabilities. For consumers looking at purchasing one of these models, it really comes down to user preference, on what brand they trust the most, and what design you want to carry around to show off at class. The Gateway offers very good hardware and performance for the price, and is a worthy contender against gaming notebooks.

The good:  Excellent performance; good value for high-end parts; includes HDMI and eSATA ports.
The bad: Not configurable, which means you're stuck paying for an HD DVD drive.
The bottom line: Combining a top laptop CPU and graphics card for less than the competition, the Gateway P-171XL FX jumps to the top of our favorite gaming laptops list, even if you get stuck with an HD DVD drive.

NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS: Die Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS basiert auf den Desktop G92 Chip und bietet dank 256 Bit Speicherbus und deutlich mehr Shadern eine bessere Leistung als der GeForce 8700M GT. Sie bietet jedoch weniger Shader als die GTX Version (64 versus 96).

Vergleichbar mit aktuellen high end Desktop Grafikkarten vom Schlage einer 7900 und X1800/X1900. Die Karten besitzen einen ähnlichen Kern, sind jedoch meist geringer getaktet und deshalb etwas langsamer. Neueste Spiele wie F.E.A.R., Quake4, Company of Heroes etc. sollten mit allen Details flüssig laufen. Die Mobility 9800, X800 und 6800 Karten sind leistungsmäßig schon der Übergang zur Leistungsklasse 2.

Intel Core 2 Extreme: Die höchstgetaktete CPU von Intels Core 2 Duo Serie wird als Core 2 Extreme (mit saftigem Aufpreis) verkauft. Technisch basiert die Serie auf den Merom Core.

17.1": 17 Zoll Displaygrösse ist ein seit 2006 häufig angebotenes Standardformat für Desktop-Replacements. Es gibt 17-Zoller ausschließlich im 16:10 Format.

Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem. DTR sind hauptsächlich für stationären Schreibtischeinsatz vorgesehen, wo Gewicht und Energiehunger egal sind.

4.2 kg: Dieser Laptop ist überdurchschnittlich schwer, verglichen mit dem Durchschnitt der Notebooks. Deshalb wird diese Gewichtsklasse vor allem von Desktop Replacements mit 17 Zoll Display bevölkert.

Gateway: Gateway ist ein amerikanischer Notebookhersteller mit eher kleineren internationalen Marktanteilen, die sich vor allem auf den nordamerikanischen Kontinent konzentrieren. Von deutschsprachigen Magazinen wurden Gateway-Computer bisher so gut wie nie getestet.

78.5%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Man muss bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
