The EliteBook 8440p is beautifully made, performed brilliantly in our benchmark tests and even had a decent four hour, 43 minute battery life under light usage. However, despite its many strengths, at this price we were disappointed to find only 2GB of memory and a meagre 250GB hard disk. The lengthy three-year return to base warranty goes a long way to making up for this, though, and touchstick users, who aren't widely catered for beyond Lenovo's ThinkPad range, will find the 8440p to be one of their better options. Most of the features the laptop is missing – more memory and a larger hard disk, for instance – are relatively cheap and easy to upgrade, but this only makes their absence more surprising. If you're paying £950 for a laptop, we don't think you should have to upgrade just to get a large amount of hard disk space. Nonetheless, if you can put up with these omissions, the EliteBook 8440p is a good general-purpose laptop.

The HP EliteBook 8440p is a rugged machine, both inside and out. The top and palmrests are covered in brushed metal, with durable metal hinges, and it’s attached directly to the magnesium subframe. It has a drain in the keyboard tray for liquids, it can withstand an adult’s direct weight on the lid, and frame flex is nonexistent. The addition of the TPM chip and biometric sensor create a comprehensive security package that protects your laptop/data/livelihood from destruction. As a machine, the EliteBook laptop provides connectivity, security, speed, and durability at 4.59 lbs (2.08 kg) and for a reasonable $999. The only significant design detractions are the small Touchpad and the average battery life. But those quibbles are minor, and the overall impression is that this laptop is ready for pretty much anything. Heck, this laptop may outlive you if you give it the chance. Comments

US-Dollar (2008) gehört HP zu einem der führenden IT-Unternehmen weltweit. HP ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 18,9 % Marktanteil der weltweit größte Hersteller von Personal Computern (Dell 16,4 %, Acer 9,9 %, Lenovo 7,5 %).

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

NVIDIA NVS 3100M: Auf GT218 Kern (GeForce G210M) basierende Business Grafikkarte (Treiber auf Stabilität und Kompatibilität von Geschäftsanwendungen optimiert). Durch geringere Taktraten etwas langsamer als eine G210M.

Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

14.0: 14 Zoll Display-Grösse stellt ein Mittelding zwischen den kleinen Subnotebook-Formaten und dem 15 Zoll-Standard-Display dar. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Diese Subnotebooks sind deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, stellen aber die höhere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 13 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

2.2 kg:

75.75%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
