80% HP HDX18 x18-1070ee Premium Notebook PC

The HP HDX18 Premium Notebook PC is designed to give its owner ‘premium entertainment and performance'. At a cost of US $ it certainly commands a premium price but is it any good? A heavy-duty desktop replacement that does most things right. A high-end GPU and a slightly more responsive trackpad would make it a perfect desktop replacement machine.

Netbooks and ultraportables might gain most of the headlines these days, but for use around the home we'd far rather be using a machine with a larger screen and more power. HP's latest HDX entertainment laptop would seem to fit the bill. A take-it or leave-it chassis, but good performance and plenty of features for your money

With a fast processor, Blu-ray drive and 18-inch 1080p screen, the HP HDX X18's spec sheet reads like a wishlist of the components you'd want in any entertainment laptop. But the configuration reviewed here, the HDX X18-1005EA, priced at around £1,200, isn't exactly wallet-friendly. Is it worth the considerably outlay? The HP HDX X18's design won't appeal to everyone, and the asking price is steep, but there's no denying that the X18 is hugely powerful and offers pretty much everything you could want from an entertainment laptop.

As far as mid- to high-end entertainment computers go, the HDX18 (and by extension the smaller HDX16) is worth keeping an eye on. The use of a 16:9 display along with included Blu-ray makes it a great system for watching television and movies. Throw in a remote controller, better-than-expected sound, and a setup powerful enough to playback 1080p video and you have yourself a very nice media machine. On-board Firewire, eSATA, and a TV tuner all help complete the experience. The touch-sensitive area isn’t perfect, the system is overly glossy, and it has too many LED lights running, but overall the HP HDX18 is one of the better entertainment notebooks available today.

Earlier this year we looked at the HP HDX16-1005ea and went away very impressed. It was the first 16:9 aspect ratio notebook we'd seen from HP, but the company was able to distil all the things we expect in a multimedia notebook into one cohesive, classy and reasonably priced machine. Now we're looking at the HDX16's larger sibling, the HDX18 - an 18.4in machine with an identical focus on multimedia, albeit in a much larger frame. If you're after a desktop replacement with all the trimmings but don't want to pay the earth, the HP HDX18-1005ea should definitely be on your list. It has all the features a multimedia machine should have, looks the part and makes for an excellent day-to-day family PC.

HP's HDX lineup of computers are designed for entertainment uses and the HDX18-1020us is a very strong example of how a laptop can be a portable media platform. While it may not one of the fastest laptops on the market, it is very well desinged for high definition video playback thanks to the Blu-ray drive, high resolution LCD panel and dedicated graphics. The inclusion of a new class of 500GB hard drives also provides it with lots of space for media files. Of course, consumers will need to be willing to carry around a larger laptop due to its screen size.

A terrific mediacentric desktop-replacement laptop, our only quibbles with the HP HDX18 revolve around its shiny screen, battery life and less than perfect audio. But these are minor issues, and the HP HDX18 is a hit where it counts - although at £1,199 inc VAT, it will hit you in the wallet, too.

What kind of price can you put on this kind of entertainment PC? Quite a bit, actually. Our machine, as configured, will run you upwards of $2300. If that's a little too rich for your blood, scale back features, and you can get a baseline model for about $1400. Or you can hang in and wait to learn more about what's happening with Toshiba and Alienware's latest media machines (hint: expect some cool stuff happening for the holiday timeframe).

Although it’s going to put a fairly decent dent in your wallet, the HP HDX-X18-1013TX is a really nice computer. Not only is it a great high-definition media centre, but it’s portable and will double as a light gaming system or home-office computer. A big double thumbs up.

HP’s newest HDX is all about design, with ease of use as a close second. While the original dual-hinged Pavilion HDX Entertainment Notebook PC was by all accounts innovative, it wasn’t exactly mobile, and its audience was limited to those who lusted after bragging rights more than true portability and functionality. HP's HDX18 packs all the functionality of its 20.1-inch predecessor into a more mobile platform.

HP HDX 18t Review
Quelle: Notebookreview.com Englisch EN→DE Archive.org version
Overall, the HP HDX 18t delivers solid overall performance and a great set of features for a reasonable value. If you're in the market for a desktop replacement notebook with a massive screen, powerful processor, and solid graphics hardware for 1080p video playback and gaming then the HDX 18 makes a compelling choice. That said, the highly "reflective" nature of the HDX 18 will probably be frustrating for quite a few users unless they're working in a dark environment. Likewise, hardcore gamers are likely to find the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT video card a little too limiting for the newest and most popular video games. In any case, the HP HDX 18 still offers a great overall package, including some really impressive built-in speakers, that will meet or exceed the expectations of most consumers.

For several months after they became a buzzed-about topic, the only 18-inch laptop we had actually seen in person was Acer's inventive Aspire 8920. Now we're seeing a mini-flood of them, with new models arriving from HP, Sony, and Toshiba. HP already makes some of the best multimedia laptops, and trading up to a true 16:9 18-inch display makes for an impressive semiportable home theater in the form of the HP HDX18.

The HP HDX 18 trumps our Editors’ Choice–winning Acer Aspire 8920G in nearly every category: graphics, wireless, battery life, and overall performance, and the HDX 18 even costs $450 less. However, the 8920G offers better viewing angles and a more-robust speaker system, even if its CineDash controls can be confusing to some. If you can live with its minor flaws, the HDX 18 is the better value.

A 20-inch laptop might sound like the ultimate media hub, and for a while, the HP Pavilion HDX-9000 (Dragon) received numerous accolades for being most extraordinary, biggest in the world, and straight out of "Ripley's Believe or Not." Unfortunately, it was too big and costly to really take off. The 18.4-inch screen will stop you in your tracks, and you'll soon realize that everything—not just the screen—screams high-end multimedia laptop.
