All things said, the MSI GT660 is a very good gaming laptop for a price of Rs. 1,39,999 with two year international warranty. The 17-inch Alienware M17x currently packs in a better processor (Core i7-820QM) and graphics (ATI Radeon HD 4870M) and comes with a 1920x1200 widescreen display, but lesser RAM and hard drive space for Rs. 1,48,999. Still, the MSI GT660 provides a great balance between performance and portability, sitting between the highly portable Alienware M11x and the heavyweight Alienware M17x. And the MSI GT660 has superior onboard sound courtesy of its Dynaudio speakers. If you’re shopping for a portable gaming laptop, be sure to consider the MSI GT660.

The $1,849 MSI GT660 is a solid mid-size gaming rig that balances portability with powerful graphics. However, we wish that the screen resolution was higher than 1366 x 768, and that MSI made a few different choices when it came to keyboard design. Consumers willing to sacrifice portability for greater performance and a larger, 18-inch FullHD screen may prefer the Qosmio X505, which is just $50 more. And for true portability, the Alienware M11x can't be beat. Still, there's something to be said for notebooks like the MSI GT660 that sit in the middle, offering a great gaming experience without overwhelming your back.

Zwischen unserem ersten Testmuster, dem Vorserienmodell des GX660R und unserem zweiten Testmuster, dem Serienmodell des GX660R, gibt es größtenteils nur minimale Unterschiede. Die einzige gravierende Neuerung ist das Full-HD Display, das wirklich einen Gewinn und sinnvolle Ergänzung für das GX660R darstellt. Aber auch die Tastatur entspricht nun eher dem was man von einer Gaming-Notebook Tastatur erwartet.

Das MSI GT660R-i74129BLW7P bringt äußerst starke Gaming-Hardware in den 15.6-Zoll Formfaktor. Von Handlichkeit kann aber nicht die Rede sein, denn das 3.5 Kilogramm schwere, aber stabile Chassis ist sehr wuchtig und hat die Dimensionen eines 16.4-Zollers. Spieler werden das verschmerzen, denn Core i7-740QM (4 x 1.73GHz), 12 GB DDR3 RAM, zwei 500 GB Festplatten im RAID 0, ein Blu-ray (BD-ROM) Laufwerk und schließlich eine GeForce GTX285M (1.024 MB) lassen das Wasser im Munde zusammenlaufen.

The GT660R-004US is one of the cheaper of the gaming/multimedia machines on the market right now. The big tradeoff here is that the screen is not that great. This machine would be a much better notebook if the screen had better contrast and more resolution. I can’t see that a 1080p screen that functions better would have added much more to the cost of the notebook. As it is, if you can live with the poor contrast and pixilation when watching movies and streaming content, this is a good machine. If you demand perfect video performance, the screen here will drive you crazy in short order. The machine does well for mid-range gaming on most titles and will serve the person wanting a gaming/multimedia machine on a budget well. If you aren’t much of a gamer and are really looking for a notebook mostly for media streaming, you can find better notebooks with screens that offer more performance in this price range. That said, most of those machines will lack the Blu-ray and gaming chops the GT660R-004US offers.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) wurde 1986 in Taiwan gegründet. MSI ist besonders als Hersteller von Hauptplatinen und Grafikkarten für PCs bekannt, bietet darüber hinaus Computerzubehör, Komplettsysteme und Notebooks an. Das Unternehmen beschäftigt weltweit etwa 16.900 Mitarbeiter und besitzt Werke in China und Taiwan. Der Markenname Microstar gehört in Deutschland allerdings der Firma Medion. Der Umsatz belief sich im Jahr 2005 auf ca. 1,52 Mrd. €. Als Notebook-Hersteller ist MSI erst seit 2005 einem breiteren Publikum bekannt und vermarktet seine Mobilcomputer weltweit, allerdings mit eher bescheidenen Marktanteilen.

Diese Grafikkarten sollten alle modernen Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Anspruchsvolle Spiele müssen jedoch in mittlerer Detailstufe gespielt werden. Ältere und weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele wie die Sims Serie können auch in hohen Detailsstufen flüssig dargestellt werden.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285M: Minimal höher getaktete GeForce GTX 280M (basiert auf den G92b Kern) und im Schnitt etwa 3-6% schneller.

Intel Core i7:

620M: Der Core i7-620M ist der schnellste Dual-Core Prozessor (im ersten Quartal 2010) von Intel und taktet dank Turbo von 2.66 - 3.33 GHz (je nach Auslastung). Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

740QM: Der Core i7-740QM positioniert sich knapp unter dem 820QM bietet jedoch eine gerinigere max. Turbo Boost Frequenz von 2.93 GHz. Die CPU unterstützt Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads. Im Vergleich zu den stärkeren Core i7 bietet er außerdem nur 6MB L3 Cache.

Intel Core i5:

460M: Schneller Mittelklasse Doppelkernprozessor mit HyperThreading (4 Threads gleichzeitig abarbeitbar) aber ohne AES Funktionen.

83.29%: Diese Bewertung muss man eigentlich als durchschnittlich ansehen, denn es gibt etwa ebenso viele Notebooks mit besseren Beurteilungen wie Schlechteren. Die Verbalbeurteilungen klingen aber oft besser als sie wirklich sind, denn richtig gelästert wird über Notebooks eher selten. Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigen" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
