Toshiba develops laptops with cell based graphics

Von: Matthias Bauer

The Toshiba SpursEngine 1000 graphic chip is made for multimedia laptops.

Toshiba wants to equip some notebooks with their new SpursEngine graphics this year. The SE1000 is made for multimedia notebooks and is based on the cell processor. This processor is already in use in the Playstation 3.

The graphic chip is equipped with 128 MB Rambus XDR memory and is able to code and decode MPEG-2 and H.246 with 1080p resolution. Toshiba is already working with manufacturers like Cyberlink, Leadtek and Corel to develop a playback software for this chip.

We saw an early prototype of an Qosimio notebook with built in spurs engine that was able to help the CPU in a face recognition task. Still the current consumption (with load) of the spurs chip was relatively high. Furthermore, all applications that want to use the chip, would have to be adapted.
