Fazit: Das Panasonic CF-W4 ist mit nur 1,25 Kilogramm Gewicht und seinen ultrakompakten Abmessungen ein idealer Reisebegleiter. Bei der Auswahl der Kernkomponenten hat Panasonic weniger auf hohe Leistung, sondern vielmehr auf eine lange Akkulaufzeit und geringen Stromverbrauch Wert gelegt. Als Folge hält das CF-W4 über viereinhalb Stunden fernab der Steckdose durch und ermöglicht somit ausgiebiges mobiles Arbeiten. Dank des stabilen und hochwertigen Gehäuses nimmt das kleine Toughbook dem Anwender auch einen härteren Umgang nicht übel und garantiert besondere Langlebigkeit und Sicherheit vor den Unwägbarkeiten des Alltags.

Fazit: Im Test waren sieben Notebooks mit den Bewertungen 7 x "gut". Es wurden unter anderem Kriterien wie Handlichkeit, Bedienung sowie Qualität getestet. Schmeiß mich runter, setz Dich auf mich oder mach mich nass: ein Rechner, der das 'Toughbook' im Namen trägt, macht viel mit und geht auch unter widrigen Bedingungen nicht so schnell kaputt.

At 2.8 pounds, this laptop is so light that you’ll forget it’s in your carrying case, and you can work unplugged for nearly 6.5 hours. A unique top-loading optical drive only adds to this tiny wonder’s appeal. The deep texture of the lid not only creates a cool, unique look, but it also adds strength, protecting the display from any force applied to the top of the Toughbook W4. Other ruggedized features include a removable, shock-mounted 40GB hard drive, a locking optical drive latch, sealed modem and Ethernet jacks, and a strong, yet lightweight magnesium-alloy shell.

Fazit: The Panasonic ToughBook CF-W4 is a great little ultra-portable notebook. The design and build quality are both first rate, while the novelty factor of the hidden optical drive is a bonus. Battery life is staggeringly good and exactly what you want from a machine like this. However, the price is high, the hard disk small and the lack of DVD writer may put some prospective buyers off. If you're looking for a thin and light machine that can withstand the bashes and knocks of a life on the road, the CF-W4 will suit perfectly, just be prepared to pay for that privilege. That said, if Panasonic could squeeze a touch screen in as well, the price would be easy to swallow.

Fazit: Tiny and attractive, it's a wonder it's so strong. The ergonomics aren't perfect, but impressive battery life and ultraportability make it an excellent travelling companion. Typical ruggedised notebooks look like something designed for frontline combat action - big, ugly plastic blocks that will withstand anything up to a direct hit by mortar fire. So it was a pleasant surprise when we found this tiny beauty in the Panasonic chassis, and a further shock that it weighs just 1.25kg. But the ultraportable size and weight had us wondering just how rugged this notebook actually is. Panasonic claims the lid will withstand up to a 100kg weight, despite the considerable flex and bend.

Fazit: Overall, I was impressed with the Panasonic W4. For those of you who are looking for a truly mobile, business class notebook, this notebook might be the best in its class. The machine is on the expensive side. However, you are getting a high quality notebook that is durable, light weight, and offers incredible battery life. I am looking forward to seeing future models of the Panasonic ToughBook series. The Panasonic W4 comes with a standard 3 year warranty. Since this machine is a review model, I did not have to contact customer support. Panasonic offers 24 hours, 7 days a week support by calling a toll-free number. Their website also has some troubleshooting FAQ's as well.

Fazit: Business travellers who tend to bang up their notebooks will appreciate the road-ready Panasonic Toughbook-W4, a semirugged ultraportable that's designed to take a few knocks. Thanks to its long battery life, the W4 should make a fine road companion, provided you can get used to its cramped keyboard. The W4 is encased in magnesium alloy, enabling it to handle the bumps and bangs of travel, and its hard drive is shock-mounted to protect your data. I looked at a shipping model of the W4, and though I didn't conduct any major torture tests, the unit felt durable and well made.

Fazit: Since CNET gave an Editors' Choice award to the ultraportable Panasonic ToughBook W2 in 2003, Panasonic has renamed the system the W4 and made a few modest enhancements to the laptop. The few case modifications involve adding a handy Wi-Fi on/off switch and a connector for Panasonic's optional port replicator; otherwise the W4's design and features are exactly the same as the W2's. The bulk of the changes on the W4, priced at $2,199, are inside the case. Panasonic has stocked the laptop with an assortment of previous-generation parts (no Core Solo or Core Duo processors here): a 1.2GHz Pentium M Ultra Low Voltage processor, 512MB of middling 400MHz RAM, a 40GB hard drive spinning at 4,200rpm, and integrated Intel graphics.

Intel Extreme Graphics 2
Diese onboard Grafiklösung für Centrino, Pentium 4 und Celeron basierte Laptops verwendet Shared Memory und hat den Codenamen Montara. Sie liegt in der schlechtesten Leistungsklasse 6 (1=beste, 6=schlechteste) des Grafikkarten-Vergleich. Sie ist nicht spieletauglich. Für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen reicht es aber meist ohne Probleme. Der Vorteil von integrierten Grafiklösungen ist ein geringer Stromverbrauch, was längere Akkulaufzeiten ermöglicht. Speziell für Subnotebooks, wo Mobilität wichtig ist, ist das nützlich. Die Benchmarks-Liste zeigt detaillierte Eigenschaften der Grafikkarten in tabellarischer Form.
Intel Pentium M
Mit Intel Chipsatz (855 oder 915) und Intel WLAN ist dieser Prozessor auch unter der Bezeichnung Centrino bekannt (Name für das Paket). Er ist verglichen mit anderen Prozessoren sehr schnell pro Megahertz und sehr genügsam. Er ist sehr gut bei Integer (Ganzzahlen), hat jedoch leichte Schwächen bei Floating Point (Gleitzahlen) Berechnungen. Er ist auch als Low Voltage Version erhältlich mit sehr geringem Stromverbrauch. 2005 war er der bei weitem häufigsten genutzte Mobilprozessor, da er sich für fast alle Anwendungen und auch Subnotebooks eignet. 12.1 Zoll Display
Dieses Displayformat kann man als grosses Subnotebook-Format bezeichnen. Der Vorteil liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook relativ klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil relativ wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten etwas anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind schwer nutzbar. Prüfen Sie auch in unserer DPI Liste, welche Displays wie fein aufgelöst sind.
17.1 Zoll Display
Mittlerweile etwas häufiger angebotene Standardformat für Desktop-Replacements. Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem. Prüfen Sie in unserer DPI Liste, welche Displays wie fein aufgelöst sind.

Panasonic ist ein international tätiger Notebook-Hersteller, allerdings mit eher geringeren Marktanteilen und wenigen Testberichten.
