Die NR21 Modelle mit Zusatzbuchstabe unterscheiden sich durch verschiedeneProzessoren und Grafiklösungen. Display, Auflösung, Gehäuse sind jeweils gleich. Das betrifft auch die NR11 Modelle. Die Modelle mit dreistelligen Ziffern (zB NR240E und NR160E) entstammen der amerikanischen Nomenklatur und sind in Europa wohl nur über das Internet zu bekommen.

When buying a laptop these days, $800 can carry you a long way. You're guaranteed a dual-core processor, an ample hard drive, and a full version of Windows Vista. The Sony VAIO VGN-NR160 gives you that much for $830 (direct), along with a range of features that'll satisfy many general-purpose users. It's easy on the eyes, as it does a better job with its brown color scheme than, say, Microsoft's brown Zune media player. Still, you'll need to add an extra 1GB of RAM to handle Vista and all the Bloatware Sony piles on.
This particular version of the NR160 is called Wenge brown for its color scheme, named after a tropical African timber. Sony added some textures that give it a synthetic, leathery look and feel—a very effective look. The textured surface extends all the way into the keyboard and palm rests area, which adds to the uniformity.

Sony's new VAIO NR160 is a very surprising entry from a company that makes primarily expensive systems. On a whole, they did a very good job with this new system. While the exterior has a bit too much of a plastic feel that isn't as nice as some other budget systems or even Sony's other models, it does offer a solid computing experience for the price. The NR160 is based around the Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 dual core mobile processor. This provides it with a good level of performance without using too much power and is definitely a step up from older Intel or AMD's current mobile processors in terms of performance. It is matched up with a full gigabyte of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory that lets it run the Vista Home Premium operating system alright, but with some slowdown with multiple applications. The storage is one of the real bright spots on the Sony VAIO NR160. Most budget notebooks still feature a fairly small 80GB hard drive.

Sony's VAIO family of laptops has traditionally been known for its high style and high prices, making these sleek machines (second only to Apple in design chops) popular with upscale buyers. With the new NR series, Sony is making its first real stab at a lower-priced laptop. Starting at $829, the system is a decent value based on the components you get, but the Sony design aesthetic apparently doesn't translate well to cheaper parts. The 15-inch VAIO NR160 feels cheap and plasticky when compared to Sony's more expensive laptops, and even similarly priced mainstream systems from Dell, but at least the NR160 rigorously maintains Sony's traditionally thin profile. There's still much to like about this inexpensive VAIO, but Sony's penchant for weighing systems down with excessive Bloatware and adware tips the scale away from a full-fledged recommendation.

"Sony" and "budget" are two words you typically don't find in the same sentence, but the company has taken the sub-$900 plunge with its new NR Series and surprised us with very good performance. At $829, the VGN-NR160E/S targets consumers who need Core 2 Duo power on a budget. Sony still has some notable issues with crapware, but there's a lot to like about this notebook. It has everything users need for everyday productivity and light multimedia use and offers plenty of style to boot. The NR Series comes in three colors: Granite, Wenge, and Silk. The 6.2-pound chassis is nicely textured on the lid and keyboard deck and has rounded edges and clean lines. Compared with the 5.4-pound Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (which the NR resembles, thanks to the white and silver color options), the VGN-NR160E/S seems a little bulky.

Mit seinem Preis kann sich das handliche Notebook gut sehen lassen. Das günstigste Modell von Sony bietet für diesen Preis alles, was man von einem Office-Notebook erwarten kann.
Besonders durch seinen Look kann das Gerät überzeugen. Mit der strukturierten, silbernen Oberfläche sticht das Notebook heraus. Auch die schlichte Anordnung in der Arbeitsumgebung passt sich in das rundum gelungene Design ein und dürfte vielen potenziellen Käufern gefallen.

Das Sony Vaio VGN-NR11S/S bietet ein ausgewogenes und für den Durchschnittsbenutzer auch leistungsmäßig ausreichendes Paket, welches vor allem durch einen interessanten Verkaufspreis punktet.
Das Notebook zeigt ein recht ansprechendes Äußeres, wobei vor allem die Oberflächenstruktur eine angenehme Haptik aufweist und auch optisch gut gefällt. Jedoch auch die Stabilität des Gehäuses kann trotz der überwiegenden Verwendung von Kunststoff beeindrucken. Die Eingabegeräte, insbesondere die Tastatur, sind ebenso im typischen Sony Stil ausgeführt und stimmen hinsichtlich Gestaltung gut mit dem Notebook überein. Auch hinsichtlich ihrer Bedienung ist sowohl der verbauten Tastatureinheit als auch dem Touchpad nichts vorzuhalten. Beide eignen sich sehr gut zum intensiven Gebrauch. Auch das Display konnte im Test durchaus positiv überraschen. Vor allem die gute Helligkeit des Panels, aber auch eine gute Farbdarstellung sprechen für das verwendete Display. Mit der spiegelnden Oberfläche muss man sich ebenso abfinden wie mit einer eher mäßigen Blickwinkelstabilität wobei jedoch auf einen ausreichend großen Arbeitsbereich hinzuweisen ist. Die Leistung des Notebooks fällt wie erwartet minimalistisch aus, zumindest was die Benchmarkergebnisse betrifft.

However, the Sony VAIO VGN-NR11S has certainly changed this perspective, as it's a great all-round notebook for anyone looking for a mix of style and performance. In every day use, we found the Sony VAIO VGN-NR11S to be a highly pleasing machine to use. The screen is excellent; as is the keyboard and if you can live with the less than cutting-edge processor and graphics this is a great notebook for the home.

Wer unbedingt auf ein Sony Vaio Notebook besteht kann mit dem NR21 S/T einen relativ preiswerten Einstieg wagen. Für ungefähr 940 Euro bekommt man dann ein gut aussehendes und solide ausgestattetes Notebook. Für ein Sony Notebook ist der Preis wirklich im Einstiegssegment. Verglichen mit anderen Herstellern ist der Preis für diese Ausstattung etwas zu hoch gegriffen. Hätte Sony das NR21 S/T mit einer stärkeren CPU wie dem T7500 ausgestattet, wäre auch die Leistung ein wirkliches Kaufargument. Natürlich gilt auch diese Aussage für das Einsteigersegment. Wer auf das geschwungene Vaio-Zeichen auf dem Deckel seines Notebooks verzichten kann, sollte sich als Alternative zum Beispiel das One C7010 HD2600-XT anschauen.

Laptops have become something of a commodity item. While Asus has been re-defining the market with the Eee PC, it's easy to forget it has been possible to get hold of very cheap notebooks (albeit not as small) for quite a while now. Hell, there have even been some free notebook deals floating around and a quick look at our own shopping section shows a large number of notebooks available for less than £300. Of course, these are all very basic machines but spend a little more and you're still looking at a dual-core CPU, while upwards of £500 should offer up some very decent notebooks.

When we made our sweep of back-to-school laptops this summer, we were surprised to see a Sony Vaio among the entry-level models. (Perhaps Sony's declining laptop market share has encouraged the company to compete at the low end of the price scale.) Only last year did we see our first Vaio limbo lower than the $1,000 mark when Sony introduced the Vaio NR line, and now the retail-only Sony Vaio NR430 E/L takes the Vaio down to the lowest end of the laptop price scale. The entry-level Sony Vaio NR430 strikes all the right notes--decent performance, pleasing design, great keyboard and display--to form an excellent 15-inch laptop for students (and home users in general) on tight budgets.

Sony's VAIO NR460E/W is one of the few laptops that the company sells for under $750. For this price, you get a fairly substandard system in terms of performance but one that has a large amount of style. This will probably be the most dertmining factor of whether an individual will purchase it over another budget laptop computer.

Sony: Die Sony Corporation ist der zweitgrößte japanische Elektronikkonzern mit Sitz in Tokio. Kerngeschäft ist die Unterhaltungselektronik. Das Unternehmen wurde 1946 unter anderem Namen gegründet und produzierte anfangs Reiskocher. Das Unternehmen brachte das erste Transistorenradio auf den Markt. 1958 wurde die Firma in Sony umbenannt. Sony ist eine Kombination aus dem lateinischen Wort sonus (Klang) und dem englischen Wort sonny (kleiner Junge). Sony ist ein Notebook-Hersteller mittlerer Grösse hinsichtlich internationaler Marktanteile.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel, die im 965GM und GL960 Chipsatz eingebaut ist. Dank voll programmierbarer Pipeline DX 10 fähig (mit Treibern seit 15.9.0.1472). Gute Performance für eine integrierte Grafikkarte, jedoch trotzdem kaum spielefähig.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT: DirectX 10 fähige Grafikkarte in der unteren Mittelklasse. Für anspruchslose Gelegenheitsspieler zwar ausreichende Grafikleistung, jedoch nicht für DX 10 Spiele mit allen Effekten.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T5250: Die T-Varianten sind die Standardversion für Notebooks und verbrauchen etwa 30-39 Watt.

T5500: Einstiegs-Doppelkernprozessor basierend auf den Merom-2M Kern.

T5450: OEM Prozessor

T8100: Ehemaliger Mittelklasse Core 2 Duo basierend auf den Penryn Kern mit VT-x Virtualisierungsfunktionen.

T5750:

Intel Pentium Dual Core: Abgespeckter Core Duo mit nur 1MB L2 Cache

T2330: basiert auf Core 2 Duo, daher 64 Bit Support (die die Pentium Dual Core T21xx nicht bieten).

T2370:

T2390: Merom basierender Mobilprozessor mit 64 Bit Unterstützung und eingeschränkten Funktionen.

15.4: 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für fast die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Gewicht ist für Notebooks durchschnittlich. Daher passt vor allem die breite Masse der Laptops mit 15 Zoll Display in diese Gewichtsklasse.

74.04%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
