Mit 999 EUR ist das VAIO VGN-P11Z Sony's erster Versuch in Richtung Netbook, aber deutlich kompakter, eleganter und besser ausgestattet. Vor allem die ergonomische Tastatur ist ein Pluspunkt. Das Display mit der hohen Auflösung ist aber gewöhnungsbedürftig und Windows Vista die falsche Wahl für die Atom CPU. Das GPS-Navigationsprogramm via Google Maps wirkt kastriert. Wer aber im Business Segment Eindruck schaffen möchte, taucht besser mit dem Sony P11Z als mit einem Netbook auf. Eine von Außen attraktivere Alternative gibt es nicht, daher räumt es die MiniTechNet Special Nomination ab.

Das Sony VGN-P11Z ist, ohne Frage, mit seinem sehr eleganten und schicken Auftreten ein optisch beeindruckendes Gerät. Vor allem, da es durch seine längliche, kleine und kompakten Form sich von den restlichen Netbooks doch deutlich unterscheidet, wird der ultra kompakt PC viele neugierige Blicke auf sich ziehen. Zudem verfügt das P11 über alle Standard Kommunikationseinrichtungen wie LAN (mitgelieferter Dongel) und WLAN. Zusätzlich wird auch noch Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR sowie UMTS angeboten. Ebenso soll es, laut einigen Internetberichten, auch über ein GPS Modul verfügen, welches das Sony P11Z auch noch zu einem mobilen Navigationssystem macht. Auch das hochauflösende UWXGA Display mit 1600x768 Bildpunkten ist sehr beeindruckend. Doch all das vermag die leistungstechnischen Defizite unseres Testkandidaten nicht zu kaschieren. Dafür ist die Wartezeit beim Hochfahren doch deutlich zu lang, und der Betrieb unter Windows Vista zu stockend.

We wanted dearly to love the Vaio P based on its lust-worthy form factor, which make all the other bland netbooks the market is awash in right now look like garbage. But after putting it through its paces, we just can’t possibly recommend it for anyone who hopes to do anything more than typing e-mail and surfing – both at a snail’s pace. Sony could be excused for charging three times as much as a netbook for this system if it delivered acceptable performance, or excused for releasing it with its existing level of performance at a reasonable price level. But paying a hefty price premium for a good-looking slab that won’t do anything just doesn’t fly. We have high hopes for the 1.86GHz variant that’s kicking around Japan, and even for a Windows 7 version in the future, but right now, this notebook simply doesn’t justify its price. Unless you value looks above all else, a $400 netbook makes an infinitely better purchase for basic productivity.

Wenn Ihnen Netbooks zu groß sind und Sie bereit sind, für möglichst kompakte Hardware etwas mehr Geld auszugeben, könnte Ihnen Sonys neue P-Serie gerade recht kommen. Der wohl größte Kritikpunkt, dem sich Sony stellen muss, ist der Preis. Für die Basisversion veranschlagt die Firma bereits 1.000 Euro. Bessere Komponenten wie etwa eine SSD kosten extra. Nichtsdestotrotz überzeugt die P-Serie durch ihre geringe Größe und die dafür gebotene Leistung.

Der mobile Winzling löst auf den ersten Blick sofort den Haben-Wollen-Effekt aus. Doch im Test entpuppen sich die technischen Spielereien als wenig praxistauglich: Die Displayauflösung nervt schon nach kurzer Zeit ebenso wie die geringe Rechenleistung, zu der ein Ressourcenfresser wie Windows Vista einfach nicht passt. Da greift man dann doch schnell zum leichteren Smartphone oder zum günstigeren Netbook, wenn man einen effizienten mobilen Begleiter sucht.

Im Fazit sieht die P-Serie extrem vielversprechend aus. Die Tastatur soll sich ersten Testeindrücken zufolge trotz der geringen Größe gut bedienen lassen, die Maussteuerung über einen Trackball gilt als exakt und eingängig. Einzig die Maustasten scheinen zu klein und fummelig geraten. Die kleine Version des Atom-Chip könnte sich mit Vista außerdem als etwas schwach auf der Brust erweisen. Größtes Manko der Geräte ist jedoch der Preis: Wenn die P-Serie im Februar auch auf den deutschen Markt kommt, soll die günstigste Version 999 Euro kosten – das ist mehr als doppelt so teuer wie die meisten Konkurrenten im Netbook-Segment. Was vielleicht auch der Grund ist, weshalb Sony penibel darauf achtet, seinen Winzling nicht als Netbook sondern als Ultra Portable PC zu bezeichnen. Wer weiß.

The Sony Vaio P’s compact size and light weight make it a very attractive choice for frequent travellers. However, working with Vista on Vaio P is a mixed experience. On one hand, the ­operating system runs smoothly when handling lite tasks but underperforms when dealing with heavier stuff such as playing back a HD video. Also, it is disappointing to note that Media Plus only provides a barebones media centre that fails to match other dedicated video or music players. Other things that mar the experience is the weak built-in speakers though this is easily fixed with the excellent noise-cancelling earphones. Still, the Vaio P is a solidly built notebook that is great for running simple apps and ­surfing the Web.

Is it worth $900 when you can get a similar laptop for less money? That depends on what matters to you. The VAIO P has a revolutionary design, an extremely high-resolution display, and a few features you won't find in a $500 netbook. That said, it still uses a relatively weak processor and isn't designed to be a primary computer. If you plan to use the VAIO P as your primary family PC and multimedia center then you will probably be disappointed. Forgetting the price for a brief moment, Sony has created a netbook that is anything but. The impressive screen, almost full-sized keyboard and sheer miniature size and weight will impress anyone that you show and for those on the go gives you a laptop that works, and works well. That extra width also helps when it comes to typing on your lap as it's wide enough to bridge your legs without you having to push them closer than is normally comfortable - if you've tried an Eee PC you'll know what we are talking about. The catch then? The Vaio P-series might sport a netbook-friendly Intel Atom processor, but the price certainly wouldn't suggest it. $900 in the US somehow translates to £825 in the UK (rather than £600) with the top of the range model available on Sony's own Sony Style website coming in at £1345.

There's no question that the Sony VAIO P stands out from the netbook crowd. It's lightweight, compact design is simply striking, and we appreciated the wide and crisp 8-inch display and zoom controls, mobile broadband connectivity, and relatively comfortable keyboard. However, $899 is a lot to pay for a secondary PC, never mind $1,199, and the VAIO P's performance under Vista is less than stellar. (We would actually that early adopters download the beta version of Windows 7, which should offer smoother performance.) As a design statement, the VAIO P is a breakthrough, and Sony crams an amazing amount of technology into a 1.4-pound chassis. We just wish it had more pep.

Die Erwartungen aus der Redaktion waren hoch und wurden im Wesentlichen nicht enttäuscht. Sonys Vaio P-Serie ist ein gelungenes Mini-Notebook mit vielen Stärken aber auch deutlichen Schwächen. Weighing in at just 625g, it's considerably lighter and more compact than all current Netbooks and ultraportables. The VAIO VGN-P11Z/W is a curious machine, with no real rivals. The high resolution display and faultless usability will interest users who struggle with Netbooks, but the cost may be an issue. The Intel Atom processor may also seem an odd choice at this price, but if you're seeking the ultimate in portability, there are few machines that can compete.

Even though Sony doesn't like its VAIO P series systems called netbooks, that is exactly what they are. They use the same base processors and share the same size that there is no real way to say it is. Sony does make the VAIO P incredibly small and lightweight, smaller than just about any other netbook on the market. It also packs in items like a high resolution display, a spacious keyboard, trackpoint mouse and built-in GPS. Still, the system is extremely expensive and very sluggish compared to other netbooks on the market. At least it looks really good.

After years in the ultraportable market, Sony has gotten it just about right: it's all about the keyboard and the display. The Vaio P series offers the best keyboard on an ultraportable or netbook, and enough screen resolution to do serious work with no side-to-side scrolling and room for toolbars and application palettes. In fact, the display's resolution is higher than most full sized notebooks up to 15 inches! Caveat: that means you'll need good eyes to read text. Its features target those who need more than a basic netbook: it adds WiFi draft n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, EVDO, a GPS and large SSD drives (relative to the small flash drives on the Eee PC). Likewise its extreme good looks, thinness, small dimensions and high quality materials cater to the high end ultramobile market rather than the budget conscious. The only area where the Vaio P doesn't exceed the budget netbook competition is processor speed, but that does help to keep the price and power consumption down. Vista runs decently on the P, especially the SSD P, and Windows 7 really sings.

Sony unterstützt mit dem Vaio VGN-P21Z alle jene, die sich ein Leben ohne Mini-Computer als ständigen Begleiter nicht mehr vorstellen können. Kompakt, leicht und das Internet mit WLAN und WWAN ständig zugriffsbereit, kann man mit dem stylischen Minigerät unterwegs unter Umständen einiges an Aufsehen erregen. Der spiegelnde Bildschirm und die relativ kurze Akku-Laufzeit des mitgelieferten 3-Zellen Akkus werden die Freude unterwegs im Freien mit diesem Gerät zu arbeiten allerdings etwas trüben.

Sony: Die Sony Corporation ist der zweitgrößte japanische Elektronikkonzern mit Sitz in Tokio. Kerngeschäft ist die Unterhaltungselektronik. Das Unternehmen wurde 1946 unter anderem Namen gegründet und produzierte anfangs Reiskocher. Das Unternehmen brachte das erste Transistorenradio auf den Markt. 1958 wurde die Firma in Sony umbenannt. Sony ist eine Kombination aus dem lateinischen Wort sonus (Klang) und dem englischen Wort sonny (kleiner Junge). Sony ist ein Notebook-Hersteller mittlerer Grösse hinsichtlich internationaler Marktanteile.

Viele Spiele sind mit diesen Karten nicht (kaum) lauffähig oder laufen nur sehr langsam. Für Spieler nicht geeignet! Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem laufen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 500: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf UL11L, US15L, US15W Chipsatz mit lizensiertem PowerVR SGX Kern. Trotz DirectX 10.1 Unterstützung durch die geringen Taktraten (100-200 MHz je nach UL11L - US15L/W) nicht spielfähig. Integrierter Video Decoder für MPEG-2, VC-1, AVC.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order"  sondern  "in  Order"  ausgeführt  werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.

8.0: Das ist ein sehr kleines Format, das für Netbooks, Subnotebooks oder UMPC verwendet wird. Es gibt nur fast keine Modelle mit diesem Format. Langes Arbeiten ist hier unpraktisch, dieser winzige Display ist für zwischendurch unterwegs gedacht. Der Vorteil von Netbooks/Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook/UMPC, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks, aber ein paar Netbooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

64.46%: Eine so schlechte Bewertung ist selten. Es gibt nur wenige Notebooks, die schlechter beurteilt wurden. Auch wenn Verbalbeurteilungen in diesem Bereich meist "genügend" oder "ausreichend" lauten, so sind dies meist Euphemismen.
