Das Sony Vaio P ist ein besonderes Stück Hardware. Nicht nur die knallige Farbgebung sondern auch die ungewöhnliche Form lenkt die Blicke auf sich. Leider trübt die langsame SSD den Spaß an der Arbeit. Oftmals nimmt sich das Vaio P eine Auszeit und lässt den Nutzer einige Sekunden warten. Unbestritten ist jedoch, dass das Vaio P Stil hat und aus der Masse hervorsticht.

Can you get an $800 laptop with five times the performance of the P Series, or a $399 netbook with better ergonomics and endurance? Of course, but the VAIO P is -- and will probably always be, unless it drops severely in price -- a niche device meant for those that have the cash to burn on an overpriced, albeit striking little laptop. But regardless of it not being a gadget for the masses, we'd still like to see it gain a touchscreen and more than four hours of battery life. Ultimately we feel the same way we did when we concluded the first VAIO P review: "There's some cool stuff happening here. $800 worth of cool things? That's your call."

Wusste Sony, dass es die Niederländer bei der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft so weit bringen würden? Die neue Vaio-P-Serie gibt es nämlich nicht nur in Schwarz, Grün und Weiß, sondern auch im Orange des Vizeweltmeisters. Diesen farbenfrohen Auftritt hat das Mini-Notebook eigentlich gar nicht nötig. Es macht auch so auf sich aufmerksam. Die kompakte und leichte Bauart erfordert ... Kompromissbereitschaft: So sind die Systemleistungen recht bescheiden, die Tastatur verkleinert und das Display eine Herausforderung für das Auge. Ein Schnäppchen ist das Vaio P mit 899 Euro auch nicht wirklich. Wer das alles hinnimmt, bekommt ein mobiles Spielzeug, mit dem sich unterwegs durchaus auch arbeiten lässt.

Sony hat mit der P-Serie einen wirklichen Winzling auf den Markt gebracht. Dabei ist die Leistung, abgesehen von der 3D-Power, sogar vergleichbar mit den größeren Modellen. Die Verarbeitung ist gut und die eingesetzten Materialien sind sehr hochwertig. Das Display konnte im Ganzen überzeugen. Die Auflösung ist riesig und das Panel spiegelt nur leicht und ist daher auch für unterwegs geeignet.

The VPCP11S1E might be small and have an Atom processor, but it’s most definitely not a netbook. No, this is a luxury device aimed at those who are happy to pay a premium for something that’s a bit different. And it certainly has a lot going for it, not least built-in 3G and GPS, along with its ultra-lightweight design. The keyboard also impresses, but using the trackpoint and/or mini Touchpad can be tricky, while the high resolution 8in screen isn’t particularly easy on the eye. Moreover, I suspect most Reg readers, myself included, would shudder at the thought of splashing out £800 on such an under-powered device, no matter how pretty it might be.

In spite of an early model that didn't convince us and which didn't convince Sony's European clients either, Sony has persevered with the Vaio P, a unique netbook. In spite of a few persistent faults, the new Vaio P is now much more usable thanks to various modifications. It is now more than a sexy, high-design product. Its size, quietness and the ease of use of the keyboard make it a good alternative to netbooks which are gaining in size. It does however cost twice as much.

We said it last year and we'll say it again: the Sony Vaio P is all about the keyboard and the display. No other tiny PC offers a usable keyboard and a widescreen display that banishes side-scrolling, even at the more viewable 1280 Pixel setting. Sony addressed our complaints with the second generation model, making the keyboard even better, increasing battery life, improving video playback and adding the handy resolution switcher for more comfortable reading. It's still not as easy on the eyes as a large display, low resolution netbook, but the P is about getting as much of a real notebook experience as possible into a very small package.Clearly this notebook isn't for everyone, though Sony tells us the last gen P sold well and the new one is in high demand. The Vaio P is for Internet workers on the go, IT people, certain vertical markets and tech fashionistas. Given the passive cooling requirements of a 1.3 lb. tiny notebook, the Intel Atom Z series is the only real choice right now, and it gets the job done for MS Office, web and email. In fact it can handle casual gaming and Photoshop, but it's no replacement for a full-sized notebook unless your needs are basic.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM/C/Z/ME/ML Chipsätzen und Nachfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.

3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafikkarten hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem laufen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 500: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf UL11L, US15L, US15W Chipsatz mit lizensiertem PowerVR SGX 535 Kern. Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order"  sondern  "in  Order"  ausgeführt  werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.

Z530: Stromsparende Variante des N270 mit Virtualization Support. Die Performance ist identisch zum N270 und daher nur für Netbooks ausreichend.

Z540: Stromsparende Atom Variante mit 1.83 GHz und dadurch etwas schneller als der typische 1.6 GHz Atom N270.

8.0: Das ist ein sehr kleines Format, das für Netbooks, Subnotebooks oder UMPC verwendet wird. Es gibt nur fast keine Modelle mit diesem Format. Langes Arbeiten ist hier unpraktisch, dieser winzige Display ist für zwischendurch unterwegs gedacht. Der Vorteil von Netbooks/Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook/UMPC, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks, aber ein paar Netbooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

66%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
