Das Toshiba Encore ist Toshibas erstes 8-Zoll Windows-Tablet. Sein Preis soll für kleine Budgets passen. Es soll angeblich von der Zusammenarbeit von Toshiba und Microsoft profitieren, mit welcher sichergestellt werden soll, dass das Gerät für Window 8.1 optimiert ist. Mit Dual-Array-Mikrophonen und Rauschunterdrückung wurde es auch für Skype optimiert. Eine attraktive Perspektive ist das freie, vorinstallierte Office Home & Student 2013. All diese Aspekte, die 8 MP Kamera und eine gute Schnittstellenauswahl bedeuten, dass das Gerät vielseitig ist und für viele Business-, Produktivitäts- und Entertainment-Szenarios taugt. Wer den 8-Zoll Bildschirm etwas zu klein für Textverarbeitung findet, kann via micro-HDMI-Port einen externen Monitor anschließen.
Auf dem Papier handelt es sich dank Intels neuestem Bay Trail Atom Quad-Core-Prozessore um ein großartiges Gerät. Mit Standard 1280 x 800 IPS Multi-Touch-Bildschirm und 32 GB Speicher (mittels microSD erweiterbar), ist es abgesehen vom aktualisierten Prozessor nicht spektakulär anders als ähnliche Geräte. Allerdings ist es billiger. Mit einem Gewicht von 0,48 kg kann der 8-Zöller gut mit einer Hand benutzt werden. Das matte silber Design ist unauffällig. Wer eine Windows-8.1-Gerät im Taschenformat sucht: Das Toshiba Encore könnte ein Gerät sein, das erst einmal geschlagen werden muss.

As a pure tablet, the Encore leaves a few things to be desired. Physically it’s heavy, thick and a bit ugly when compared to the likes of the Nexus 7 and iPad mini. Furthermore, the paucity of touch-optimised apps in the Windows store, compared to to iOS and Android, is still an issue. Certainly, if Toshiba forgot to ask for this one back, I could see it quickly replacing the HP Pavilion dm1 as my backup and travel PC and my Nexus 7 as my go-to tablet. With my Android Moto G and a Windows 8.1 Encore, I’d be covered for all eventualities.

In reality, certain aspects of Microsoft’s operating system just don’t work on such a small device. Trying to use it in a traditional Windows way is far too frustrating and buying a Bluetooth keyboard is the only way you will get great use of having Office access. The buggy, unresponsive performance we endured did not disappear even with our second review model, so it makes it difficult to recommend.

Toshiba Encore 2 10.1 inch
Das Toshiba Encore 2 der Encore-Serie verfügt über einen Intel Atom Z3735G, einen 64-Bit Microprozessor für Basis-Funktionalität. Er wird oft in kleinen Budget-Notebooks verwendet und braucht nur sehr wenig Strom. Der verbaute Prozessor hat vier Kernen und eine Taktrate von bis zu 1,38 GHz.
Am Encore 2 laufen Windows 8.1 und Office 365. Für Durchschnittsuser sollte dies mehr als ausreichend sein. Anzumerken ist, dass Office 365 auf ein Jahr beschränkt ist. Das 10.1-Zoll-Gerät ist robust und mit nur 0,63 kg sehr leicht. Der Bildschirm hat eine Auflösung von 1280 x 800 und eine Pixeldichte von 149 ppi. Das Encore 2 bietet weite Blickwinkel, lebendige Farben und gestochen scharfe Details.
Das Gehäuse aus nachgemachtem Aluminium sieht attraktiv und verleiht dem Gerät ein teureres Aussehen. Außerdem verfügt das Encore über eine 5 MP Primär-Kamera mit Autofokus und eine 1,3 MP Front-Kamera. Für begeisterte Fotografen mag dies nicht qualitativ hochwertig genug sein.
Das Encore 2 ist mit 1 GB RAM und 32 GB internem Speicher ausgestattet. Die Speicherkapazität kann auf bis zu 128 GB erweitert werden. Das Gerät kann ohne Verzögernungen mehrere Aufgaben gleichzeitig ausführen. Mit nur 1 GB RAM, sollte man aber nicht zu viele gleichzeitig erwarten. Mit einer WiFi-Verbindung hält das Gerät bis zu 7 Stunden durch. Das ist gut für ein Notebook.

Anders als die zahlreichen Android-Tablets am Markt, läuft das Toshiba Encore Mini unter dem Windows 8.1 Betriebssystem. Windows bietet eine Vielzahl von Apps, die das Ansehen von Videos und Bildern, Internet-Suren und andere alltägliche technische Funktionen ermöglichen. Im Herzen befindet sich ein Intel Atom Prozessor mit Intel Burst Technology 2.0 mit einer Taktrate von 1,33 GHz, die mit Burst-Technologie bis zu 1.83 GHz erreichen kann. Es gibt 16 GB internen Speicher, 1 GB DDR3L RAM mit einer Taktrate von bis zu 1.3 GHz und einen Micro-SD-Kartenslot. Das Tablet verfügt über zwei Kameras, eine 2 MP Kamera an der Rückseite und eine 0.3 MP Frontkamera. Toshiba: Die Toshiba Corporation ist ein japanischer Misch- bzw Technologiekonzern. Die Firma entstand 1939 und 1978 wurde Toshiba offizieller Firmenname. Zu den Produkten und Dienstleistungen des Unternehmens gehören Energie, industrielle und soziale Infrastruktursysteme, Aufzüge und Rolltreppen, elektronische Komponenten, Halbleiter, Festplatten, Drucker, Batterien, Beleuchtung, Logistik und Informationstechnologie. Toshiba war einer der größten Hersteller von Personal Computern, Unterhaltungselektronik, Haushaltsgeräten und medizinischen Geräten.
Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen. Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail): Grafikeinheit in den Tablet- und Notebook-SoCs der Bay-Trail-Serie. Basiert auf der Ivy-Bridge-GPU, unterstützt DirectX 11 und bietet 4 EUs.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order" sondern "in Order" ausgeführt werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.
Z3770: Sparsamer Quad-Core-SoC auf Basis der Atom-Architektur "Silvermont" für Tablets. Taktet mit 1,46 bis 2,4 GHz und integriert eine DirectX-11-fähige Grafikeinheit namens Intel HD Graphics.

7.00: Dieses Displayformat ist im mittleren Bereich für Smartphones. Man hat damit den Kompromiss zwischen guter Sichtbarkeit, Details und Auflösung am Bildschirm und trotzdem bringt man es in Hosentaschen unter.
8.00: Bei dieser Display-Größe stehen große Smartphones und ein paar kleine Tablets zur Verfügung. Anders als bei den meisten Smartphones sieht man mehr am Bildschirm, mehr Details und kann größere Auflösungen nutzen. Für fehlsichtige Menschen sind solche Formate besser. In der Hosentasche sind solche Geräte aber nicht mehr leicht unterzubringen und ganz leicht sind sie wohl auch nicht.

Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
