Für den hohen Preis des Portégé R600 erhält der Käufer vergleichsweise wenig Gegenwert. Vor allem Verarbeitungsqualität und Bildschirmhelligkeit fallen enttäuschend aus. Die Datenübertragungsraten des Solid-State-Laufwerks stellen zwar jede Festplatte in den Schatten, liegen aber unter denen vergleichbarer Referenzmodelle. Nur in den Disziplinen "Akkulaufzeit" und "Tastatur" kann das Subnotebook von Toshiba überzeugen. Neben der getesteten SSD-Variante für 2.500 Euro steht derzeit auch eine Ausgabe des Portégé R600 mit Festplatte zum Verkauf. Das Gerät fällt mit einem Verkaufspreis von 1.600 Euro wesentlich günstiger aus.

Der Toshiba Portégé R500-11Q ist für seine Größe ein richtiges Monster. Für Leute, die sehr viel unterwegs sind und auch mobil arbeiten wollen, ist das Gerät eine gute Investition. Dank des guten Akkus ist man lange ohne Nabelschnur überlebensfähig und durch das Fliegengewicht bemerkt man das Gerät kaum - was natürlich die Gefahr birgt, dass es einfach mal vergessen wird, was bei dem Preis ein Drama wäre.

Is the R600 – and 384GB – worth all that extra money? For most users, no. The most obvious application for a huge chunk of fast, solid-state storage is audio and video editing, something the R600’s graphics abilities don’t really lend themselves to, and it’s tough to imagine any businessperson who might have enough presentations, documents and files to occupy such a huge drive. There’s a sense that Toshiba have produced the Portégé R600 half for bragging rights and half because they think they should: because SSDs are getting bigger, and it makes sense to drive the market by slotting them into appealing machines. Perhaps a desktop-replacement notebook would be a more suitable fit, but that would lack the ability to surprise colleagues and friends when you tell them your slender ultraportable has more storage than their home PC and a DVD burner to boot.

The R600-101 is a real eye catcher, and it is light. But the build quality isn't what it could be and neither screen nor keyboard wowed us. The battery life claim should probably be taken with a large pinch of salt too.

Its 6.5-hour battery life and featherlight weight will certainly be appreciated on business trips. However, its performance is lackluster compared to other ultraportables, and the display is less than stellar. If you don’t need an optical drive, the 1-pound-heavier Lenovo ThinkPad X200s offers superior performance, a higher screen resolution, and four more hours of runtime, for nearly $500 less. But if you demand a headturning design and a DVD drive, this ultraportable is worth the splurge.

Overall, the Toshiba R600 isn’t for everyone, but we should be glad that it exists. Despite a few flaws, Toshiba produced a computer that is relatively competitive with high-end ultraportables like the Dell Adamo, the Sony TT, and the even the ThinkPad X301, but is lighter than almost all of them. That weight savings will cost you–in a number of ways–but if portability is something you value and you want a notebook that will impress your peers, then the R600 is worth keeping in mind. From a bang-for-your-buck standpoint, or for anyone simply looking for a great ultraportable, it is not the best option.

Pick up the Toshiba Portegé R600-108 and you'd be forgiven for thinking that the assembly line had forgotten to install a computer inside the case. But inside nonetheless resides an Intel SU9400, a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor backed up with 3GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage. Overall, the ‘look and feel’ impression swings somewhere between awe at the empty weight – and horror at the huge price for such an insubstantial toy-like notebook. The Toshiba Portegé R600-108 has a good performance benchmark result but a dreadful screen and foreshortened battery life that makes it hard to recommend.

Toshiba has thought of just about everything with its gorgeous, sleek, Portégé R600. It’s like an Apple MacBook Air, but with ports…and an optical drive…and (sadly) Windows Vista. In fact, it’s only a hair thicker than the Air (0.77 versus 0.76 inches), and just like the Air, it has that Frisbee-light feel to it. We’re thrilled that Toshiba engineers managed to include all the hardware Apple could not (although the Air does have a larger screen), but at $2,099 for the base model and $2,999 for our tested configuation, the R600 will be an option for only a small segment of the market (and one that continues to shrink with the recession). Toshiba’s ultrasleek ultraportable is a marvel of technology. The 2.2-pound R600 is fully loaded with an optical drive, a solid-state hard drive, good performance—and a very high price.

Overall, it's a great ultraportable notebook but not a perfect one. Some sacrifices have to be made with a notebook of this category and it's unfortunately the underperforming screen and price. We still highly recommend this notebook for the business road warrior who needs extreme portability regardless of price, but one needs to get used to the screen. With that, we rate the Toshiba Portege R600 an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars.

Modell: Aufgrund hoher Portabilität und realativ guter Mobilitätswertungen für eine Nutzung unterwegs vorgesehen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

12.1": Es handelt sich um ein relativ häufiges Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Es stellt die durchschnittliche Grösse für Subnotebooks dar. Netbooks dagegen haben noch kleinere Displays. Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Der kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten etwas anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar.
