We're quite fond of the Toshiba Portege R700: it's very slim, incredibly light, has an internal optical drive and a capable battery for just under a grand. Sweet. If you're looking for an ultralight among 13" models, the R700 stands out for value and portability. Sure, it's not clad in metal like the 13" macBook Pro but it's much lighter and won't give you hot flashes when using it on your lap. In fact, it's as light as the MacBook Air, but more powerful. Toshiba offers enough CPU options to suit everyone from the budget conscious to the need for speed crowd, though even the top configuration can't come close to dethroning the speed king Sony Vaio Z.

The Toshiba Portégé R705-P25 is basically your poor man's Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS. Together, they're the lightest duo with 13-inch screens and built-in optical drives, except one costs half as much as the other. The R705-P25 is a beautifully-made ultraportable and ideal for those who have busy travelling schedules, but are reluctant to sacrifice all the amenities of a full size laptop. I would still recommend the Asus U30Jc-1A in this price range, though. It has more graphics power and ships with a bigger battery, even if it is almost two pounds heavier.

Toshiba’s Portege R705 is an unexpected addition to the company’s ultraportable range. Based on the Portege R700 unveiled as part of Toshiba’s 25th anniversary for notebooks, the R705-P25 is a Best Buy exclusive with an MRSP of $889.99 but a street price that scrapes in at under $800. That makes it the cheapest Portege to date, and Toshiba would like us to remember it’s also the lightest 13.3-inch notebook with an integrated optical drive (outside of Japan, at least).

In our tests, the Toshiba Portégé R705 stacked up nicely against the competition.  In our general desktop workloads, as well as gaming/multi-media benchmarks, it was shining even brighter. Our $929.99 configuration managed to beat our expectations from a performance standpoint, with even the Intel HD integrated graphics core performing better than expected, all things considered. On a 13.3" ultraportable that's as mobile as this machine, you generally don't expect to do a lot multimedia muscle.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

Intel Core i3:

350M: Der Core i3-350M ist ein Core i5-430M, jedoch ohne Turbo Boost und geringer getaktete GPU. Dadurch läuft die CPU mit maximal 2.26 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

370M: Der Core i3-370M taktet etwas höher als der Core i5-430M, jedoch ohne Turbo Boost und geringer getaktete GPU. Dadurch läuft die CPU mit maximal 2.4 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). 

Intel Core i5:

460M: Schneller Mittelklasse Doppelkernprozessor mit HyperThreading (4 Threads gleichzeitig abarbeitbar) aber ohne AES Funktionen.

13.3: 13 Zoll ist ein häufiges, jedenfalls aber das grösste Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das verhältnismäßig kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten ein wenig anstrengend für die Augen ist. Sehr hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar. Nicht fehlsichtige Menschen sollten mit dieser Displaygröße aber zurechtkommen können.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt nur wenige Sub-Notebooks/Netbooks, die noch leichter sind. 10 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

Diese Subnotebook/Netbook ist deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, und stellen eine mittlere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 11 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

82.63%: Diese Bewertung muss man eigentlich als durchschnittlich ansehen, denn es gibt etwa ebenso viele Notebooks mit besseren Beurteilungen wie Schlechteren. Die Verbalbeurteilungen klingen aber oft besser als sie wirklich sind, denn richtig gelästert wird über Notebooks eher selten. Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigen" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
