Die Serie Qosmio G50 gibt es unter diesem Namen auch in der Vermarktungsregion "The Americas", jedoch tragen dort die Einzelmodelle die Nummerierung G55, obwohl die Serie G50 heißt (Stand Okt.08). Als Grund für die verwirrende Namensgebung könnten die unterschiedlichen Preisniveaus der Vermarktungsregionen gemutmaßt werden.

Optisch macht der Toshiba Qosmio G50 eine sehr gute Figur. Hier wird geprotzt und nicht gekleckert. Technisch ist das Notebook - sofern man mit 18"-Display und knapp 5 kg Eigengewicht noch davon sprechen kann - auch ziemlich gut unterwegs.

Toshibas Qosmio G50 wirkt wie ein gediegenes Hifi-Möbelstück und fügt sich mit der Hochglanzoptik in die heimische Entertainmentwelt ein. Zum Arbeiten ist es fast zu schade - und zum Tragen bei weitem zu schwer. Bei der Ausstattung gibt es nichts zu bemängeln, die Leistung stimmt, und auch beim Sound kann man nicht klagen. Selbst ohne externe Unterstützung kommen die Bässe gut und sorgen für angemessen Untermalung in Filmen. Für ein Media Center mitsamt Fernsehempfang liegt von der Antenne bis zur Fernbedienung alles bei. Ein Hybrid-Tuner für DVB-T sowie analogen Kabelempfang ist eingebaut.

Yet despite our misgivings with the Cell processor, there’s still a lot to love about the G50. Considering the massive screen real estate, it’s pretty good value. The case is gorgeous and rugged, and the speakers actually do a decent job. Even the inclusion of something as simple as IceTV (an Aussie EPG which we’re big fans of) makes us realise that Toshiba is on to something with this theatre PC. And then we remember Toshiba’s stupid decision not to include a Blu-ray drive, and we shake our heads in dismay, wracked with the pain of what could have been. If and when a Blu-ray equipped version arrives, the G50 will be a beast to reckoned with... but until then, there are more capable HD multimedia notebooks on the market.

Attack of the Mammoths: 18.4-inch DTR Shootout!

Having had our fun with all four units, we're hard pressed to actually come up with a clear winner. It's obvious that all four units have a different take on what an 18.4-inch desktop replacement should be and have their own strengths, but it's also obvious they all agree that size is key here. The Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue 8930G here comes out tops in our books for its value and performance, but we didn't quite like its fingerprint magnet surface and glossy screen. Toshiba's Qosmio G50 feels like a traditional desktop replacement, huge and chunky with solid sound, but the dimmer screen was a letdown for sure.

Can the quad-core powerhouse deliver? The Toshiba Qosmio range of high-end multimedia notebooks has always been a little bit different, as it tries to mix unique style with some of the latest mobile technologies around. The Toshiba Qosmio G50-10H is a hulking 5kg in weight and isn’t the kind of machine you’ll want to carry around. The Toshiba Qosmio G50-10H is a great machine and the asking price is fairly reasonable for the specification and features on offer. We enjoyed using it and would have made it a Hot Product but for one fact: no Blu-ray.

On balance, the $1,549 Toshiba Qosmio G55-Q802 is a groundbreaking machine at a reasonable price. If you’re willing to splurge to get full HD and a Blu-ray player, the HP HDX 18 costs $600 more. However, the co-processor is an idea whose time may have come again—at least until Intel’s mobile quad-core processors hit the market­—and Toshiba provides some useful power for video hounds.

The Qosmio G55-Q802 is the odd man out among this group in that it does not offer a Blu-ray drive or even the 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution needed for true HDTV-quality video. Toshiba's Qosmio G55-Q802 adds some dubiously useful gesture control gimmicks, but the real promise is in speedy video transcoding--as long as you use the right software.

Toshiba's multimedia system is a great all-rounder, but has no Blu-ray drive. We've long admired Toshiba's Qosmio range, as it has produced some of the best desktop replacement systems we've seen. Feature-packed and cutting edge, the Qosmio G50-115 (£1076 inc. VAT) is a case in point, although look elsewhere if you want an integrated Blu-ray drive. The most noticeable thing about this laptop is its size – it's one of the largest machines we've seen. Part of this is due to the huge 18.4-inch display, which is a pleasure to use. It's bright and colourful, and great for watching movies on. Unfortunately, it lags behind the other laptops when it comes to sharpness, with a lower resolution of 1680 x 945 pixels. Although still sharp enough for displaying several windows at once, you won't be able to watch films in full high-definition (HD).

The Qosmio G50-115 is a great laptop, but it’s difficult not to feel let down by the lack of true HD support. With rivals all offering Blu-ray drives in their laptops, Toshiba’s current conviction that DVD upscaling is the way to go smacks of desperation, although it does actually work well enough for those simply wanting to watch movies on the small screen. If that’s you, and you don’t mind accepting a slightly lower resolution, the G50-115 is a bit of a bargain. It offers most of the features of the £300 more expensive G50-10H, and similar everyday performance, despite a slower processor; the only thing you’ll really be missing out on is the outstandingly sharp 1080p screen.

An interesting, generally well-built notebook with some unique features including top-class DVD upscaling and excellent speakers, the Toshiba G50-115 is tragically denied a potential Recommended Award by its poor screen. Other than this, however, it's a very good machine so if your budget stretches a little further and Blu-ray isn't of interest, one of the more expensive models with a better screen is worth serious consideration and should deliver the all-round multimedia excellence the Qosmio line has always been known for.

Selten betritt ein Notebook unsere Redaktion mit derart vielen Features. Die Upscaling-Funktion, mit der normale DVDs auf HD-Niveau hochskaliert werden, sorgt durchaus für ein verbessertes Bild. Allerdings ist das stark abhängig von der Qualität des Videomaterials und ein Blu-ray-Ersatz ist die Funktion nicht. Die Gestensteuerung ist sicherlich ein nettes Gimmick, mehr aber auch nicht.

Toshiba’s Qosmio range has long been at the forefront when it comes to high-end multimedia laptops, but has recently lapsed with the death of HD DVD and widespread adoption of Sony’s Blu-ray technology. The Qosmio G50-127 is a good machine, but it doesn’t take the Qosmio line any further and no longer sets the pace when it comes to technology. That said, it’s still a lot of machine for the money, and if you want a laptop to replace your desktop PC then few offer better multi-tasking capabilities or comfort.

Zu den Produkten und Dienstleistungen des Unternehmens gehören Energie, industrielle und soziale Infrastruktursysteme, Aufzüge und Rolltreppen, elektronische Komponenten, Halbleiter, Festplatten, Drucker, Batterien, Beleuchtung, Logistik und Informationstechnologie. Toshiba war einer der größten Hersteller von Personal Computern, Unterhaltungselektronik, Haushaltsgeräten und medizinischen Geräten.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Nachfolger der 8600M GT und durch 65nm Prozess deutlich höhere Taktraten (und dadurch mehr Performance) bei gleichem Stromverbrauch. Dadurch sollte die Leistung einer 8700M GT erreicht werden können (bei Verwendung von GDDR3). Verbesserte Videofunktionen (VP3), HybridPower und Hybrid SLI Unterstützung.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T9400: Der Core 2 Duo T9400 ist ein schneller Mittelklasse Prozessor mit 2.53 GHz und 6 MB Level 2 Cache. Verglichen mit dem gleich schnellen P9500, braucht der T9400 mehr Strom (höherer TDP).

P7350: Der P7350 ist ein günstiger Einstiegsprozessor in die Core 2 Duo Linie. Durch fehlende Virtualisierungsfunktionen ist die CPU weniger geeignet für Businessanwendungen.

P8400: Der P8400 ist ein Mittelklasse-Dual-Core Prozessor der Core 2 Duo Reihe. Durch den TDP von 25W eignet sich die CPU auch für kleinere Notebooks. Für ambitionierte Spieler könnte die Leistung jedoch etwas zu gering ausfallen.

P8600: Schneller, sparsamer und leistbarer Zweikernprozessor. Für die meisten Spiele und Multimedianawendungen ausreichend schnell und mit 25 Watt TDP auch für kleinere Notebooks geeignet.
