The Toshiba Qosmio X505 is among the largest notebooks at 18.4” and 9.7 lbs., and the CPU and graphics updates make it a powerful everyday desktop replacement and a darned good gaming machine. The Core i5 is cheaper with only the DVD drive option, but the video and gaming performance is quite good relative to the more expensive Core i7 models. If you must have a Blu-ray drive and/or an HD display, then you should look at the Core i7 models, but for those who don’t need a quad core machine or a Blu-ray drive, the Core i5 can save you a bundle.

If portability isn't too much of an issue and you want a high performance gaming system for $1500, the Toshiba Qosmio X505-870 is an excellent choice. The system offers some outstanding performance thanks to the Core i7 quad core processor and some superb gaming thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M. The inclusion of a Blu-ray drive makes it a nice multimedia platform.

A blazing-fast 18-inch desktop replacement with Intel Core i7 power and smooth Blu-ray playback. At $1,899, the Toshiba Qosmio X505 isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s a bargain compared to more expensive systems like the Alienware M17x and ASUS W90, especially considering that neither of those systems come standard with a fast solid state drive. While some slightly less expensive systems like the Gateway P-7808u FX and MSI GT725 provide slightly higher frame rates in some games, the Qosmio X505’s outstanding overall performance, blazing fast SSD, stylish chassis, and smooth Blu-ray playback make it a more compelling system. With the Qosmio X505-Q890, Toshiba has really upped the ante on what was already an industry leading gaming notebook. That said, competitors have also stepped up their game in this price and size range. If you're looking for something a little more portable (relatively speaking), the 17-inch ASUS G73JH ($1,599; $1,699 with Blu-ray) pairs dual 7,200-rpm drives with a slightly slower 1.6-GHz Intel Core i7-720QM CPU, but a slightly faster ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics card. However, if you're looking for a gorgeous multimedia experience with a giant 18.4-inch screen, great speakers, and unmatched CPU performance, look no further than the Qosmio X505-Q890.

We haven't looked at an update of Toshiba's now-venerable line of Qosmio desktop-replacement machines in some time, so we were excited to check out a freshly minted Core i7 version of one of these big machines. The X505 offers the deluxe feature mix we’ve come to expect from this family of high-end desktop replacements.

Diese Grafikkarten sollten alle modernen Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Anspruchsvolle Spiele müssen jedoch in mittlerer Detailstufe gespielt werden. Ältere und weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele wie die Sims Serie können auch in hohen Detailsstufen flüssig dargestellt werden.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M: Die GeForce GTS 250M besitzt wie die 9800M GT 96 Shaderkerne jedoch nur einen 128 Bit Speicherbus. Dieser Nachteil soll mit GDDR5 Speicher ausgeglichen werden (falls er verbaut wird). Mit DDR3 Speicher is die Karte jedoch deutlich langsamer als eine 9800M GT. Dank 40nm Prozess ist der Stromverbrauch deutlich unterhalb der 9800M GT.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M: Selber Chip wie die GeForce GTS 260M jedoch mit etwas höheren Chiptaktraten (412 versus 396 Gigaflops Leistung laut Nvidia Homepage). Mit GDDR5 Grafikspeicher wird der 128 Bit Speicherbus nicht zum Flaschenhals.

High-End Grafikkarten welche auch neueste und anspruchsvolle 3D Spiele in hohen Auflösungen und Detailstufen flüssig wiedergeben können. Durch den hohen Stromverbrauch, werden diese GPUs nur in großen und schweren Notebooks mit geringen Akkulaufzeiten angeboten.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M: High-End Grafikkarte basierend auf den GF106 Chip mit GDDR5 Unterstütztung.

Intel Core i7:

820QM: Der Core i7-820QM ist ein High-End Quad Core Prozessor für Notebooks und taktet dank Turbo Modus automatisch zwischen 1.73-3.06 GHz. Ausserdem unterstützt er Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads.

740QM: Der Core i7-740QM positioniert sich knapp unter dem 820QM bietet jedoch eine gerinigere max. Turbo Boost Frequenz von 2.93 GHz. Die CPU unterstützt Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads. Im Vergleich zu den stärkeren Core i7 bietet er außerdem nur 6MB L3 Cache.

18.4: 18 Zoll Displaygrösse gibt es erst seit 2008 für Desktop-Replacements. Es gibt nur wenige Notebooks, die einen größeren Display haben als 17 Zoll. Allerdings gibt es auch ein paar Laptop-Displays, die noch größer sind. Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem. DTR sind hauptsächlich für stationären Schreibtischeinsatz vorgesehen, wo Gewicht und Energiehunger egal sind.

78.67%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
