Toshiba's A350-11N is a good laptop, but unfortunately it's let down by poor 3D performance.

Overall, the Toshiba Satellite A350 is a competent laptop for light multimedia use. The lack of a dedicated graphics card is a flaw, however, and could be enough to force people to look elsewhere.

Toshiba give us an entry-level multimedia laptop with good usability, but poor 3D performance. Overall, the Toshiba Satellite A350 is a competent laptop and a reasonable choice if you need a media centre for watching movies. Unfortunately, the lack of a dedicated GPU means it won't be for everyone, and those seeking a gaming laptop should look elsewhere.

If you’re simply seeking a device to watch films on, alongside your daily laptop needs, then there’s a lot to like about the Toshiba Satellite A350. It’s comfortable, reasonably well equipped, offers good build quality and the screen is surprisingly good for movie playback. It’s also competitively priced. Just don’t expect to find a cut-priced Toshiba Qosmio, as the A350 lacks the power of its more expensive sibling, and stumbles when it comes to some aspects expected of a multimedia machine.

Overall then, in the Toshiba Satellite A350-11N we have a notebook that carries over a lot of the strengths (including darn good speakers and an excellent keyboard), but unfortunately also a lot of the weaknesses of its predecessor. It's not bad value for the money and does offer fairly good battery life, but considering failings like the screen's poor viewing angles and lack of digital video output there might be better and cheaper alternatives available depending on your priorities.

The newly refreshed 16” A350 series notebook from Toshiba is a solid performer, keeping all that we loved about the first generation notebook and improving in a couple of areas. Power consumption technically improved, but since Toshiba went with a smaller capacity battery, battery life actually decreased. The glossy Fusion surface is still as scratch-resistant as it ever was, but still very smudge prone as noted before. System performance is great when compared against non-gaming notebooks, and the dual hard drives open up a ton of potential for a lot of storage. One thing Toshiba should have changed with this newer model is the starting price. Since the time the A305 was released last year many gaming notebooks have started to appear in the $1,000-$1,300 price segment. This means consumers who are shopping based on price and specifications will lean towards the “better” gaming machines if they are so near in cost.

If you like your laptops nice and shiny, Toshiba's new Satellite A350-12J will go down a treat. Not only do you get a glossy black chassis with a lid that's surprisingly smudge-resistant, but the keyboard is also coated in the stuff. It's not something that will appeal to all tastes, and we found it felt very odd to type on. If you can get used to its shiny and somewhat slippery keyboard, the Satellite A350-12J is a solid notebook that performs reasonably well as long as you're not into gaming. The problem is that there's nothing that really makes it stand out from the crowd, and at this price we had hoped to see some form of discrete graphics.

As far as first impressions go, the Satellite A350 from Toshiba certainly gets the thumbs up. The all-black chassis looks smart and it feels like a solidly built piece of kit. At just under £600, the Satellite A350-12J represents good value, but we do have our reservations. The glossy keyboard, for example, appears to be a case of style over substance, while the lack of Bluetooth and Gigabit LAN are two surprising omissions in a £600 laptop. And considering its movie-watching credentials, it's a shame Toshiba couldn't find room for a remote control.

The Toshiba gets the nod this month, even without the outstanding battery life of the Acer, or the highest benchmark score, simply because it's the best all-rounder of the bunch. There's nothing missing, and everything you could desire in a mid-range system is supplied amply. It's not the most portable, but it's well ahead of the pack in all other regards.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: In 55nm gefertigter DirectX 10.1 Mittelklasse-Grafikchip mit vergleichbarer Leistung einer 8600M GT Grafikkarte. Dank Avivo Video Engine kann die Grafikkarte den Prozessor bei verschiedensten Videooperationen (auch HD Video) entlasten.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T5800: Günstiger Merom basierender Einstiegs-Doppelkernprozessor ohne Virtualisierungsunterstützung.

P8600: Schneller, sparsamer und leistbarer Zweikernprozessor. Für die meisten Spiele und Multimedianawendungen ausreichend schnell und mit 25 Watt TDP auch für kleinere Notebooks geeignet.

T6400:

16.0: 16 Zoll Display-Varianten gibt es im Großen und Ganzen erst seit 2009, dürften aber immer häufiger werden, vor allem in Kombination mit 16:9 Diagonalen. Die Bildschirmgröße ist etwas größer als die häufige Standardgröße 15 Zoll. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.
