Yes, the AMD E-240 is slow. But this laptop, the Toshiba Satellite C655, is a nice laptop for the price - and this laptop only exists because AMD has finally produced a competent Atom competitor. The 15.6” display, with its correspondingly large keyboard, is more pleasant to use than your typical 10.1” or 11.6” netbook. If you’re looking for a laptop, but your budget is slim, the Toshiba Satellite C655 should be on your short list.

There is a lot to consider when looking at a machine like the Toshiba C655D using the AMD E-240 APU including the performance, usability and battery life. We have already shown a basic look at performance and as you should expect with a single-core variant of the Zacate platform, the speed of the machine doesn't quite live up to the expectations we had. Considering we are using a 15.6-in screen with room for a large-ish battery, that is disappointing. However, performance compared to most of the Atom-based netbooks/notebooks will likely paint this Toshiba in a better light.

It helps to think of the Toshiba Satellite C655D more as a big netbook than a well-rounded mainstream notebook. At $398 (currently $378 at Walmart), it costs the same as many of those higher-end 10-inch systems, yet it offers a much larger screen and better graphics. Still, consumers must temper their expectations. Even though it has a 15-inch screen, you can't expect it to perform like similarly sized notebooks that cost $150 more. But if you're looking for a very basic laptop and a 10-inch screen is too small for you, the C655D is a pretty good deal.

Compared with many of the notebooks we review, the Toshiba Satellite C655-S5542 offers mediocre performance and graphics. But for those who only need a system for simple tasks such as surfing the Web, checking Facebook and writing documents, this $399 system gets the job done at an almost irresistible price. If you can spend a few more bucks, we recommend the $479 HP Pavilion g6x, which has a second-gen Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB 5,400-rpm hard drive, as well as four color options. However, the Satellite C655-S5542 is good choice for those on a tighter budget.

We think the Acer Aspire 5349-2635's fourth gigabyte of RAM, third USB 2.0 port, HDMI port, and $50 lower price outweigh the Toshiba Satellite C655-S5542's Bluetooth, so we're keeping the Acer as our Editors' Choice in the under-$500 category. But the Satellite is a solid contender for shoppers on a tight budget—as if there were any other kind of shoppers in this segment.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

ATI Radeon HD 4250:

onboard Grafikchip von AMD (im RS880M Chipsatz) mit Avivo HD (jetzt UVD2 mit PIP Support) und guter 3D Leistung (für einen onboard Chipsatz).

AMD Radeon HD 6310: Integrierte Grafikkarte in then Zacate Netbook Prozessoren (z.B. E-350 und E-240) mit UVD3 Video Prozessor und keinem eigenen Speicher.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

AMD V-Series:

V120: Einstiegs-Einzelkernprozessor mit integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller. Durch die hohe Taktung, deutlich schneller als Atom basierte Netbooks, jedoch deutlich langsamer als Intel Celeron Doppelkern CPUs. 

AMD E-Series:

E-240: Intel Atom Konkurrent mit relativ schneller integrierter Grafikkarte. Der Einzelkernprozessor sollte auf dem Niveau eines hoch getakteten Atom mit 2.0 GHz liegen. Die integrierte Grafikkarte in etwa auf dem Niveau von NVidia ION.

Intel Celeron:

B815: Einstiegs Doppelkernprozessor mit einer geringen Taktrate und vielen deaktivierten Features des Sandy Bridge Kerns (kein Turbo Boost, AES, ...). Beherbergt eine integrierte Grafikkarte und einen Speicherkontroller.

15.6: 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für fast die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
