The Toshiba Satellite L505-S5966 should fit most users’ basic needs, and at $549, it represents a pretty good bargain. Some may prefer the $499 Dell Inspiron 15, which lasts an hour longer on a charge. But the L505 delvers a more stylish design and a larger hard drive (320GB vs. 250GB) for just a bit more money.

Toshiba's Satellite L505-S5969 is a very low priced offering that can be found for roughly $500 that comes with some nice features. This includes a USB/eSATA combo port that allows one to use extremely fast eSATA hard drives with the system and a full sized keyboard with numeric keypad. The extremely low price does have some frawbacks including the lack of a HDMI port, poor speaker volume and no support for the recently ratified 802.11n wireless. Still, it offers a very compelling package for those on a tight budget.

Toshiba's Satellite L505-GS5035 is a mix of new and old features that will have benefits for some but end up making it only an average class of laptop. Performance is good with the Core i3 processor and the eSATA port is a welcome addition. The lack of an HDMI output and the glossy keyboard will detract many others. With a base price of $700, the system stretches the limits of a budget class laptop when most of the competition is $50 to $100 less.

If you like the Toshiba brand, spend the extra $50 to get the Core i3 version of this notebook (the L505-GS6002), which will future-proof your investment.

At $499, it undercuts two other budget retail-only laptops we've looked at, the Asus K60I-RBBBR05 and the Dell Inspiron i1545-4266IBU by $30, but the price break is the only advantage it has when viewed against its budget brethren. The Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018 is about the cheapest dual-core laptop that you'll find, and it provides a predictably basic feature set, but boasts competitive performance, respectable battery life, and zero Bloatware.

Toshiba: Die Toshiba Corporation ist ein internationaler Technologiekonzern (siebtgrößter Hersteller von elektrischen und elektronischen Geräten weltweit).Toshiba entstand 1939 und 1978 wurde Toshiba offizieller Firmenname. 2006/07 machte die Toshiba Corporation einen Umsatz von 43,6 Milliarden Euro. Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: Im GL40 oder GS40 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Technisch eine geringer getaktete GMA 4500MHD (400 MHz versus 533) und durch den geringeren Takt auch kein BlueRay Logo Support.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5165: Umbenannte Mobility Radeon HD 4650 mit geringfügig höheren Taktraten. Daher kein DirectX 11 Support und leistungsmäßig knapp oberhalb der 4650 einzureihen.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: Abgespeckter Core Duo mit nur 1MB L2 Cache

T4200:

T4400: Der Intel Pentium T4400 ist ein Dual-Core Einstiegs-Mittelklasse Prozessor von Intel mit jediglich 1 MB Level 2 Cache und ohne Virtualisierungsfunktionen. Dem T4400 fehlen im Vergleich zur Core 2 Duo Linie auch einige Stromsparfunktionen.

Intel Core i3:

330M: Der Core i3-330M ist ein Mittelklasse Dual-Core Prozessor ohne Turbo Boost Modus. Daher läuft die CPU mit max. 2.13 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

15.6: 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für fast die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

Dieses Gewicht ist für Notebooks durchschnittlich. Daher passt vor allem die breite Masse der Laptops mit 15 Zoll Display in diese Gewichtsklasse.
