Fazit: In this crop of conservatively designed notebooks, the 5.5-pound Toshiba Tecra A6 comes the closest to sexy. The glossy silver-metallic-flake paint job would look just as at home on an Audi, and we love the 14.1-inch widescreen panel. The Tecra doesn’t have a wireless broadband option, and performance and battery life were on the low side for this group. At only $1,149 (as tested), you get a lot for your money.

Fazit: All work and some play is the message Toshiba seems to be sending out with its Tecra A6-S513. The new laptop is aimed at those who split their time between corporate duties and leisure activities. The Tecra A6-S513 features several midrange components, including the Intel Core Solo T1300, and is priced ideally for professionals and students who want decent features for a reasonable amount of money. This system is fine for basic multitasking—such as working on Microsoft Office files while listening to music—but those who demand really high performance should look elsewhere.

Fazit: The Toshiba Tecra A6 is quite a beefy notebook for its very low price, though I have a few minor gripes with it. The power of the Core Duo and Mobility Radeon X1400 ensure that this laptop will make short work of whatever I throw at it. Though the battery life isn't exactly brilliant it is good enough to get through a few hours of work done while on the run. If you're looking for a sleek, great value laptop with plenty of grunt yet still retaining portability it's hard to go past the Toshiba Tecra A6.

Fazit: The Tecra A6-S513 is one of Toshiba's least-expensive business notebooks. Compact and relatively light, the $1149 (as of April 18, 2006) machine weighs 5.3 pounds. It has a 14.1-inch, 1280-by-768-Pixel TruBrite wide screen, and runs for 3.9 hours on one battery charge. It would make a very good commuter notebook. The handsome black-and-silver portable is adequately though not extravagantly configured, with Wi-Fi, 128MB of shared video RAM, a removable 80GB 5400-rpm hard drive, a FireWire port, a five-in-one media-card reader, four USB ports scattered about the case, and a built-in right-side combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive.

Fazit: With the number of notebooks now on the market it is hard to imagine that at one time, Toshiba had the game all to itself. With over 21 years of experience in portable computing it knows a thing or two about mobility. The Toshiba Tecra A6 may not be the most striking or feature rich of machines on the market but it comes in at a comfortable weight with a battery life to match. If you’re on a strict budget and battery life is a priority, you’ll be glad of the A6. If you’re looking for a fully featured notebook with plenty of staying power, this is a great machine but you won’t find little extras as standard.

Fazit: The good: Strong application performance for the money; attractive design and solid construction; roomy, comfortable keyboard; hard drive protection and spill-resistant keyboard provide peace of mind; fingerprint reader provides added security and convenience. The bad: Glossy screen coating bound to annoy business users; not configurable. The bottom line: The Toshiba Tecra A6 is a well-designed business laptop that delivers good performance for the money and a host of business-friendly security features, but its glossy display will prove to be a deal breaker for many.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1400: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 ist der Nachfolger der ATI Mobility Radeon X600. Die Spezifikationen gleich der X1300, wahrscheinlich jedoch schneller getaktet). Sie ist eine mobile Grafikkarte mit leicht überdurchschnittlicher Leistung und kann neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mit allen Details. Für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen reicht es problemlos.

Intel Core Duo: Intel Core Duo (Pentium M-Nachfolger), ein Doppelkernprozessor mit sehr gutem Verhältnis von Leistung zu Stromverbrauch. Die 2 MB L2 Cache werden gemeinsam genutzt. Die maximale Leistungsaufnahme von 31 Watt ist nur 4 W mehr als beim Pentium M. Aufgrund geringen Stromverbrauchs eignet sich Core Duo auch für Subnotebooks. Ausserdem unterstützt er nun auch SSE3 Befehle. Bei Anwendungen, die für Multiprozessoren designed wurden, kann die Leistung fast verdoppelt ausfallen verglichen mit Pentium M.

T2300: Die schwächeren Typen wie T2300 eignen sich für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen.

14.1": 14 Zoll Display-Grösse stellt ein Mittelding zwischen den kleinen Subnotebook-Formaten und dem 15 Zoll-Standard-Display dar.

Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

2.3 kg: Diese Subnotebooks sind deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, stellen aber die höhere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 13 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

Toshiba: Toshiba ist einer der grössten internationalen Notebook-Hersteller. Für Toshiba-Modelle gibt es viele Testberichte. Die Gesamtbewertungen deutschsprachiger Magazine fallen sehr positiv aus, das Preis/Leistungs-Verhältnis wird eher durchschnittlich beurteilt. Bei den Teilbewertungen Ausstattung und Display schneidet Toshiba ebenfalls gut ab.
