Der Intel Core i5-4258U ist ein sparsamer Dual-Core-Prozessor auf Basis der Haswell-Architektur, der für den Einsatz in großen Ultrabooks vorgesehen ist. Dank Hyperthreading können die 2 Kerne gleichzeitig bis zu 4 Threads bearbeiten. Die in 22 Nanometer gefertigte CPU taktet mit 2,4 GHz, kann per Turbo Boost aber Frequenzen von bis zu 2,9 GHz erreichen (2 Kerne: ebenfalls 2,9 GHz).

Haswell ist der Nachfolger der 2012 vorgestellten Ivy-Bridge-Architektur und soll vor allem mit höherer Performance und verbesserter Energieeffizienz punkten. So wurde sowohl die Sprungvorhersage optimiert als auch die Zahl der Ausführungseinheiten erhöht, wodurch die Pro-MHz-Leistung um knapp 10 Prozent gesteigert werden konnte. Neue Befehlssatzerweiterungen wie AVX2 und FMA sollen die Performance in darauf ausgelegten Anwendungen zusätzlich verbessern. Eine Besonderheit der ULV-Versionen ist die Integration des Chipsatzes auf das CPU-Package, um dadurch Leistungsaufnahme und Platzbedarf zu senken.

Die Performance liegt dank der verbesserten Architektur leicht oberhalb eines Ivy-Bridge-basierten Prozessors mit gleicher Taktrate.  Damit ist der Core i5-4258U beinahe so schnell wie der ältere i5-3320M. Unter Einsatz der neuen Befehlssätze wie AVX2 kann die Leistung aber auch deutlich besser ausfallen. Damit stehen nicht nur für Office- und Multimedia-Zwecke, sondern auch für anspruchsvolle Anwendungen ausreichende Reserven zur Verfügung.

Für die Grafikausgabe zeigt sich die im Prozessor integrierte Intel Iris Graphics 5100 (40 EUs) verantwortlich, die mit 200 - 1100 MHz taktet. Diese bietet ein deutliches Performanceplus gegenüber der HD Graphics 4000, was die Iris Graphics in Schlagdistanz zu einigen dedizierten Grafikkarten der unteren Mittelklasse bringt. Allerdings verhindert selbst schneller Dual-Channel-Speicher in vielen Fällen eine noch höhere Leistung.

Der Core i5-4258U liegt in der mit Haswell neu eingeführten TDP-Klasse von 28 Watt, die insbesondere für größere Ultrabooks im Format von 14 - 15 Zoll konzipiert wurde.

Der Intel Core i5-4210H ist ein Dual-Core Prozessor der Mittelklasse auf Basis der Haswell-Architektur, der im dritten Quartal 2014 vorgestellt wurde. Dank Hyperthreading können die 2 Kerne gleichzeitig bis zu 4 Threads bearbeiten. Die in 22 Nanometer gefertigte CPU taktet mit 2,9 GHz, kann per Turbo Boost aber Frequenzen von bis zu 3,5 GHz erreichen (2 Kerne: 3,4 GHz). Im Vergleich mit dem älteren i5-4200H taktet der 4210H damit genau 100 MHz höher.

Performance

Die Performance des Core i5-4210H entspricht nahezu exakt der des i5-4330M, der allerdings eine deutlich niedrigere TDP besitzt. Damit stehen nicht nur für Office- und Multimedia-Zwecke, sondern auch für anspruchsvolle Anwendungen und Spiele ausreichende Reserven zur Verfügung.

Grafikeinheit

Für die Grafikausgabe zeigt sich die im Prozessor integrierte Intel HD Graphics 4600 verantwortlich, die mit 400 - 1150 MHz taktet. Das Performanceplus gegenüber der HD Graphics 4000 liegt (bei gleichem Takt) bei rund 30 Prozent, was die HD 4600 nahe an dedizierte Einsteiger-GPUs wie die GeForce GT 720M heranbringt.

Leistungsaufnahme

Für eine Dual-Core-CPU besitzt der Core i5-4210H eine ungewöhnlich hohe Leistungsaufnahme von 47 Watt TDP. Derart hohe Werte werden in der Regel sonst nur von Quad-Core-Modellen erreicht. Damit ist die CPU für große Notebooks ab etwa 15 Zoll geeignet.
