Der Intel Core i7-4980HQ ist ein High-End Quad-Core Prozessor auf Basis der Haswell-Architektur, der im dritten Quartal 2014 vorgestellt wurde. Dank Hyperthreading können die 4 Kerne gleichzeitig bis zu 8 Threads bearbeiten. Die in 22 Nanometer gefertigte CPU taktet mit 2,8 GHz, kann per Turbo Boost aber Frequenzen von bis zu 4,0 GHz erreichen (weitere Turbo-Stufen: 4 Kerne: 3,8 GHz, 2 Kerne: 3,9 GHz). Eine Besonderheit ist die schnelle integrierte GT3e-Grafikeinheit mit eigenem eDRAM-Speicher (128 MB, 77 mm², on-Package, 102 GB/s).

Architektur

Haswell ist der Nachfolger der 2012 vorgestellten Ivy-Bridge-Architektur und soll vor allem mit höherer Performance und verbesserter Energieeffizienz punkten. So wurde sowohl die Sprungvorhersage optimiert als auch die Zahl der Ausführungseinheiten erhöht, wodurch die Pro-MHz-Leistung um knapp 10 Prozent gesteigert werden konnte. Neue Befehlssatzerweiterungen wie AVX2 und FMA sollen die Performance in darauf ausgelegten Anwendungen zusätzlich verbessern.

Performance

Durch die sehr hohen Turbo-Taktraten ergibt sich eine Performance knapp über dem Level des Core i7-4910MQ und zählt damit Anfang 2015 zu den schnellsten Notebook-CPUs überhaupt. Die Extreme-Edition-Modelle wie der i7-4940MX haben allerdings den Vorteil, dass die (vergleichbar hohen) Maximaltaktraten durch die höhere TDP-Einstufung auch über längere Zeit konstant gehalten werden können. Dennoch meistert die CPU selbst die anspruchsvollsten Anwendungen mühelos.

Grafikeinheit

Für die Grafikausgabe zeigt sich die im Prozessor integrierte Iris Pro Graphics 5200 mit 40 Execution Units verantwortlich, die mit 200 - 1300 MHz taktet. Die Iris Pro bietet eine rund 50 Prozent höhere Performance als die HD Graphics 4600 anderer Haswell-CPUs und erreicht sogar das Leistungsniveau dedizierter Mittelklasse-Grafikkarten wie der GeForce GT 740M.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die TDP von 47 Watt schließt neben den CPU-Kernen auch die Grafikeinheit, die Northbrige inklusive Speichercontroller sowie Teile der Spannungswandler ein. Damit ist die CPU am besten für große Notebooks ab etwa 15 Zoll geeignet.

Der Intel Core i7-4710MQ ist ein schneller mobiler Quad-Core Prozessor auf Basis der Haswell-Architektur. Dank Hyperthreading können die 4 Kerne gleichzeitig bis zu 8 Threads bearbeiten. Die in 22 Nanometer gefertigte CPU taktet mit 2,5 GHz, kann per Turbo Boost aber Frequenzen von bis zu 3,5 GHz erreichen (Turbo-Stufen: 4 Kerne: 3,3 GHz, 2 Kerne: 3,4 GHz). Im Unterschied zum 4710HQ ist die CPU nicht verlötet, sondern gesockelt, zudem fehlt VT-d und die Grafikeinheit taktet etwas langsamer.

Die Performance des Core i7-4710MQ liegt in etwa auf dem Niveau des Core i7-4850HQ und ist mit der älteren Ivy-Bridge-CPU i7-3820QM vergleichbar (ähnlich gute Turbo-Ausnutzung vorausgesetzt). Auch anspruchsvollste Anwendungen bewältigt der i7-4710MQ damit ohne Probleme.

Für die Grafikausgabe zeigt sich die im Prozessor integrierte Intel HD Graphics 4600 verantwortlich, die mit 400 - 1150 MHz taktet. Das Performanceplus gegenüber der HD Graphics 4000 liegt bei rund 30 Prozent, womit sich die HD 4600 knapp hinter der Radeon HD 8650G und auf dem Level einer dedizierten GeForce GT 720M einordnet.

Gegenüber vergleichbaren Modellen der Vorgängergeneration (Ivy Bridge: 45 Watt) ist die maximale Leistungsaufnahme des i7-4710MQ auf 47 Watt (TDP) angestiegen, was auf die Integration der Spannungsregler in die CPU zurückzuführen ist. Damit ist die CPU lediglich für große Notebooks ab 15 Zoll geeignet.
