Die Nvidia GeForce 9600M GS ist eine DirectX 10 fähige Grafikkarte für Notebooks und technisch eine GT mit geringerer Taktung des Grafikkerns.

Im Vergleich zu 8600M GT bzw. 9500M GS wurde der Produktionsprozess von 80nm auf 65nm umgestellt. Dadurch konnte Nvidia bei gleichbleibenden Stromverbrauch (bzw. Abwärme) die Taktraten des Chips erhöhen. Weiters wurden die Videofunktionen (PureVideo HD mit VP3) verbessert (z.B., weniger CPU Belastung bei HD Dekodierung) und Hybrid SLI (bei der 9600M GS nur mit HybridPower) hinzugefügt (nur in Verbindung mit einem aktuellen Nvidia Chipsatz).

HybridPower ermöglicht das Umschalten zwischen onboard Grafik (im Nvidia Chipsatz) und dedizierter Grafikkarte (9600M GS) in Windows Vista. Dadurch kann die dedizierte Grafikkarte abgeschaltet werden, wenn sie nicht benötigt wird (Office, Surfen) und dadurch Energie gespart werden. Hybrid Power kann im Vista Betrieb umgeschalten werden (derzeit noch manuell per Tool, später lt. Nvidia automatisch im Treiber). GeforceBoost funktioniert mit der 9600M GS nicht, da sie von der Zusammenschaltung mit der Chipsatzgrafik (SLI) nicht profitieren würde.

Wie auch bei der 8600M GT übernehmen 32 so genannte Stream Prozessoren die anstehende Grafikarbeit (die früher die Pixel und Vertex Shader übernommen haben). Der Vorteil ist, daß es theortisch keinen Leerlauf der ALUs mehr gibt. Die Streamprozessoren sind bei NVIDIA 1-dimensional (1D) und können pro Takt eine Skalaroperation mit einer MADD- (Addition und Multiplikation) und MUL-Anweisung (Multiplikation) durführen. Ausserdem taktet NVIDIA die Shader-ALUs etwas höher als den restlichen Chip.

Durch die höhere Chiptaktung, sollte die 9600M GS die Performancewerte der 8600M GT übertreffen bei geringerem Stromverbrauch. Bei sehr anspruchsvollen DirectX 10 Spielen wie Crysis oder World in Conflict reicht die Leistung jedoch, wie bei der GT, nicht um die Effekte flüssig darzustellen (da sie mit der höchsten Detailstufe gekoppelt sind). Ältere DirectX 9 Spiele sollten jedoch in höchster Detailstufe flüssig laufen.

Bei Verwendung des langsamer getakteten GDDR2 Speichers (400 statt 800 MHz) ist die Grafikleistung etwa 20% niedriger als bei GDDR3 (jedoch sinkt auch der Stromverbrauch um etwa 3 Watt auf 17 Watt).

Im Vergleich zu Desktop Grafikkarten lässt sich die 9600M GS am besten mit der ebenfalls auf den G96 Kern basierenden Geforce 9500 GS vergleichen, durch die geringere Taktung sollte die mobile Version jedoch etwas langsamer sein (die Desktop 9600 GT hat einen breiteren Speicherbus und ist dadurch deutlich schneller).

Durch die höhere Taktung soll die Karte bis zu 20% schneller sein als eine 9600M GT.

Wie auch die 9600M GT sind in die GeForce 9650M GT die Videofunktionen namens Purevideo HD mit VP3 integriert (für die Entlastung der CPU bei HD-Videos) und auch Hybrid SLI (HybridPower mit aktuellem Nvidia Chipsatz).
