Die NVIDIA GeForce GT 625M ist eine DirectX 11 Grafikkarte der unteren Mittelklasse, welche im 3. Quartal 2012 vorgestellt wurde. Sie basiert auf den selben Chip wie die GeForce GT 620M, bietet jedoch höhere Taktraten. Die 620M gibt es basierend auf den GF117 Chip (28nm) und den älteren GF108 (40nm), beide Ableger der Fermi-Architektur. Die 28nm Version besitzt jedoch keine eigenen Monitorausgänge und kann daher nur in Verbindung mit Optimus genutzt werden.

Architektur

Beim GF117 handelt es sich um einen optimierten 28nm-Shrink des noch in 40nm gefertigten Vorgängers GF108 auf Basis der Fermi-Architektur. Dementsprechend besitzt der Chip 96 Shader-ALUs (inkl. Hot Clock), 16 TMUs sowie eine ROP-Partition (= 4 ROPs). Weitere Details zur Fermi-Architektur finden Sie auf der Seite der GT 435M. Laut Hersteller wurden verschiedene Überarbeitungen vorgenommen, um die GPU optimal auf den neuen Herstellungsprozess anzupassen und die Leistung/Watt zu maximieren. Die eigentlichen Rechenwerke (SM, Streaming-Multiprozessoren) hat man hingegen ohne größere Änderungen beibehalten. Als Besonderheit besitzt der GF117 keine eigenen Displayausgänge, was den Chip kleiner und effizienter macht, jedoch zwingend den Optimus-Betrieb in Kombination mit einer Prozessorgrafikkarte voraussetzt.

Leistung

Die 3D-Leistung der GeForce GT 625M ist abhängig von der Taktung des Chips unter Last (und dadurch von Notebook zu Notebook verschieden). Sie sollte jedoch unterhalb der GeForce GT 630M liegen und dadurch nur für Casual Gamer genügend Leistung bringen. Anspruchsvolle Spiele sollten nur in geringer Detailstufe oder ruckelig laufen.

Features

Die Features des GF117 dürften sich zu großen Teilen mit dem älteren GF108 decken. So können die Shader Cores (auch CUDA Cores genannt) durch die Schnittstellen CUDA, DirectCompute 2.1 und OpenCL auch für generelle Berechnungen (z.B. Video Transcoding) angesprochen werden. Über PhysX können auch Physikberechnungen auf die GPU verlagert werden, wofür der Chip in den meisten aktuellen Spielen jedoch zu langsam sein dürfte. 3D Vision ist beim GF117 nicht möglich.

Die NVIDIA GeForce GT 645M ist eine DirectX 11.1 Mittelklasse Grafikkarte für Notebooks, welche im 3. Quartal 2012 vorgestellt wurde. Sie basiert auf dem selben 28nm GK107 Chip wie die GeForce GT 640M, der Chip wird jedoch höher getaktet. Es sind sowohl Ausführungen mit DDR3, als auch mit schnellerem GDDR5 möglich, die jeweils über ein 128 Bit breites Speicherinterface verfügen. Die meisten Modelle besitzen günstigen DDR3 Grafikspeicher.

Architektur

Mit Kepler löst Nvidia die bisherige Fermi-Architektur ab, die unter anderem bei verschiedenen Chips und Modellen der GeForce-500M-Serie zum Einsatz kam. Der GK107 verfügt als derzeit kleinster Kepler-Chip über 2 Shader-Blöcke, die vom Hersteller mit dem Kürzel SMX bezeichnet werden. Zusammen mit zwei Polymorph Engines und einer gemeinsamen Raster Engine bilden diese einen sogenannten GPC (Graphics Processing Cluster). Da die Shader keine eigene Takt-Domain mehr besitzen (Hot Clock), entspricht die Rechenleistung der 384 ALUs in etwa 192 Einheiten der Fermi-Architektur mit doppelter Taktrate. Diese Änderung ist einer der Gründe dafür, dass sich laut Nvidia die Energieeffizienz gegenüber dem Vorgänger verdoppelt hat. Auch die Tesselations-Leistung soll, speziell bei hohen Faktoren, noch einmal deutlich verbessert worden sein. Als zusätzliche Neuerungen werden zudem erstmals PCIe 3.0 sowie ein noch nicht näher bezeichneter, optionaler Turbo-Modus unterstützt. Dieser kann, ausreichende Kühlungsreserven vorausgesetzt, die Kerntaktrate um bis zu 15 Prozent anheben. Da der Turbo vom BIOS gesteuert wird, steht er, falls vom Notebook-Hersteller implementiert, unabhängig vom Betriebssystem zur Verfügung.

Leistung

Je nach Taktung des Chips im Notebook (der Hersteller kann dies an die Kühlung anpassen) ist die Leistung um einige Prozentpunkte höher als bei der GT 640M. Anspruchsvolle Spiele wie Battlefield 3 laufen dadurch in 1.366 x 768 Pixeln und mittlerer Detailstufe flüssig. Im Konkurrenzvergleich liegt die GT 645M etwa zwischen der Radeon HD 8750M und 8770M.

Features

Das aktualisierte Featureset umfasst nun die Unterstützung von bis zu 4 aktiven Displays (mit Optimus u.U. weniger), die mit einer maximalen Auflösung von 3840 x 2160 Pixeln zum Beispiel über DisplayPort 1.2 oder HDMI 1.4a angebunden werden können. HD-Audio-Formate wie Dolby True HD und DTS-HD lassen sich als Bitstream an einen geeigneten Receiver senden. Wie in der Vergangenheit kann jedoch auch weiterhin 3D Vision nicht mit Optimus-Unterstützung kombiniert werden.

Der PureVideo HD Videoprozessor der fünften Generation (VP5) wurde vom GF119-Chip übernommen. Dieser kann die Formate MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 und VC1/WMV9 bis zu einer Auflösung von 4k decodieren und somit den Prozessor entlasten. Auch zwei parallele Streams, beispielsweise für Picture-in-Picture bei einer Blu-Ray, sind möglich. Eine weitere Neuerung ist die Integration eines dedizierten Videoencoders ähnlich Intels Quick Sync, der über die NVENC-API angesprochen werden kann.

Die Leistungsaufnahme der GeForce GT 645M liegt etwa im Bereich der alten GT 640M, womit sich die Grafikkarte am besten für Notebooks ab 14 Zoll eignet. Bei geringer Last helfen zusätzliche Taktstufen dabei, Energie einzusparen, im Leerlauf kann die GPU mit Hilfe der Optimus-Technologie zugunsten eines IGP auch vollständig deaktiviert werden.
