Die AMD Radeon R7 M260X ist eine Anfang 2014 vorgestellte DirectX-12-Grafikkarte der (unteren) Mittelklasse für Notebooks. Sie basiert auf der GCN-Architektur (28 Nanometer Mars-Chip) und ähnelt den Karten der älteren Radeon-HD-8600M- und 8700M-Serie.

Architektur

Der Grafikchip der R7 M260X verfügt über 384 Shadereinheiten und wird mit 715 MHz getaktet, woraus sich eine Rechenleistung von rund 550 GFLOPS ergibt. Als Speicher kommen maximal 4 GB GDDR5 (1.000 MHz, 4.000 MHz effektiv) zum Einsatz, die über ein 128-Bit-Interface an die GPU angebunden sind.

Performance

Die Leistung der Radeon R7 M260X profitiert von der vergleichsweise hohen Speicherbandbreite und liegt in etwa auf dem Level einer GeForce 830M. Moderne Spiele des Jahres 2014 können damit in niedrigen bis mittleren Einstellungen flüssig dargestellt werden, etwas ältere oder weniger anspruchsvolle Titel auch mit höheren Settings.

Die 384 Shader können per OpenCL auch für generelle Berechnungen eingesetzt werden (als 6 Compute Units). Im Vergleich zur Terascale 2 Architektur der 7600er Serie ist die GCN-Architektur bei generellen Berechnungen deutlich schneller.

Features

Die R7-Serie unterstützt das automatische Umschalten zur Prozessorgrafik, welches mit dem Namen Enduro bezeichnet wird (früher auch Dynamic Switchable Graphics). Dank Eyefinity können mehrere Monitore an den Grafikchip angeschlossen werden.

Die GPU bietet neben Enduro auch einige zusätzliche Stromspartechniken. AMD hat zum Beispiel Power Gating im Chip implementiert, um Bereiche des Grafikchips abzuschalten die nicht benötigt werden. Weiters ermöglicht ZeroCore einen deutlich verringerten Stromverbrauch bei inaktivem Display (natürlich nur ohne Enduro schlagend). Zu guter Letzt gibt es noch die PowerTune Funktion, mit der AMD den Chip automatisch über- und untertakten kann um innerhalb der TDP Grenzen zu bleiben.

Die GPU besitzt auch weiterhin einen integrierten HD Audio Prozessor, der Discrete Digital Multipoint Audio (DDMA) unterstützt und so Audio an mehrere Ausgabegeräte gleichzeitig schicken kann.

Leistungsaufnahme

Der Stromverbrauch sollte leciht oberhalb vergleichbar schneller Nvidia-Maxwell-GPUs wie der GeForce 830M liegen. Dadurch eignet sich die Karte für mittelgroße Notebooks ab 13 bis 15 Zoll.

Die AMD Radeon R7 M275DX ist eine Mitte 2014 vorgestellte Grafiklösung für Notebooks der Einstiegsklasse, die sich aus zwei verschiedenen GPUs im Crossfire-Verbund zusammensetzt. Neben einer integrierten Radeon R7 in FX7600P oder A10-7400P, besteht die Grafiklösung auch aus einer dedizierten Radeon R5 M260, M260X, M265, M265X.

Beide Grafikkarten berechnen im AFR-Modus (Alternate Frame Rendering) abwechselnd ein Bild. Deshalb leidet die Grafiklösung auch unter Mikrorucklern bei Bildraten um die 30fps (unterschiedliche Abstände zwischen zwei Bildern führen zu Rucklern, obwohl genug Bilder pro Sekunde berechnet werden). 

Performance

Je nach Treiberunterstütztung für das Spiel und der eingesetzten Grafikkarten kann die M275DX teilweise deutlich schneller sein als die dedizierte Grafikkarte alleine. In unseren zahlreichen Spielebenchmarks einer gut angepassten Kombination aus FX-7600P und M260 mit schnellem Dual-Channel Hauptspeicher konnten wir einen Zuwachs von bis zu 61% messen (Alien Isolation Benchmark high). Leider gibt es auch immer wieder Fälle wo die Leistung unter die der Dedizierten zurückfällt, wodurch der User manuell Dual Graphics ausschalten sollte. Des weiteren kann es insbesondere bei niedrigen Bildraten zu störenden Mikrorucklern kommen. Im Durchschnitt erreichte die oben erwähnte Kombination in 25 Spielebenchmarks eine 13% Verbesserung im Vergleich zu ausgeschalteten Dual Graphics (M260 alleine im Netzbetrieb). Nimmt man nur die Spiele die unterstützt werden von Dual Graphics erhält man einen guten Zugewinn im Schnitt von 34% (siehe Balkendiagramm weiter unten). In manchen Spielen kam es bei unseren Benchmarktests auch zu kleineren Problemen wie Ruckler im Menü (F1 2014, Shadow of Mordor), falsche Textureinstellungen (Ryse), Hangs (Thief), grafische Fehler (Fifa 15, Dragon Age: Inquisition).

Features

Die Shadereinheiten können wie bei anderen GCN-GPUs auch per OpenCL für generelle Berechnungen (GPGPU) eingesetzt werden.

Die Grafiklösung unterstützt weiterhin Eyefinity sowie das automatische Umschalten zur Prozessorgrafik, welches unter dem Namen Enduro vermarktet wird (vormals Dynamic Switchable Graphics). Zu den weiteren Energiesparfeatures zählen PowerPlay und PowerTune (automatische Über- und Untertaktung) sowie ZeroCore (Deaktivierung der GPU bei Inaktivität). Mantle wird ebenfalls von der M275DX unterstützt und kann in manchen Settings zu leichten Performancegewinnen führen.
