Die AMD Radeon R9 M380 ist eine dedizierte Mittelklasse Grafikkarte für Notebooks. Sie basiert auf einen 28nm GCN Grafikkern mit 12 Compute Units und GDDR5 Grafikspeicher. Trotz des ähnlichen Namens, ist sie deutlich schneller als die R7 M380 (2 weniger Compute Units, DDR3 Grafikspeicher).

Features

Das Featureset der AMD Radeon R9 M380 umfasst u.a. die sog. „Eyefinity“ Technologie, die je nach Schnittstellen Gegebenheiten die Nutzung von bis zu 6 Bildschirmen simultan ermöglicht.

Aus Effizienzgründen kann die Mittelklasse GPU zusätzlich mit der „Enduro“ Technologie aufwarten, die quasi das Pendant zu Nvidias „Optimus“ darstellt und im Idle-Betrieb oder bei Niedriglastaufgaben (Office, Internet etc.) die GPU zugunsten der CPU-Grafikeinheit deaktiviert, um Strom zu sparen.

Für Spieler stellt AMD in der M380 seine Grafikschnittstelle „Mantle“ zur Verfügung. Diese vom Unternehmen selbst entwickelte Programmierschnittstelle für Grafikausgaben stellt ein Alternativmodell zu Direct3D oder OpenGL dar und soll in zukünftigen Spielen und Anwendungen zunehmend unterstützt werden. Unter anderen unterstützen bereits Titel, wie Battlefield 4, Thief oder Die Sims 4 die Mantle- Schnittstelle.

Mit „App Acceleration“ stattet AMD die Radeon M380 zudem mit einem Technologiepaket zur Verbesserung der Videoqualität und Steigerung der Anwendungsleistung aus. Um alle beschriebenen Funktionen zu nutzen, ist jedoch eine Unterstützung für OpenCL, DirectCompute oder DirectX Videobeschleunigung (DXVA) erforderlich.

AMD Radeon R9 M390X

Die AMD Radeon R9 M390X ist eine mobile High-End-Grafikkarte aus 2015. Sie basiert wahrscheinlich auf die AMD Radeon R9 M295X mit Tonga Chip (bekannt aus dem iMac 5K Late 2014). Diese nutzt 2048 Shader (32 Compute Units) und die dritte Generation von GCN (wie der Tonga Desktop Chip). Der Kerntakt ist jedoch mit maximal 723 MHz versus 850 MHz um 15% geringer und auch der Speichertakt ist leicht reduziert. 

Die Leistung sollte sich daher etwas unterhalb einordnen und zwischen Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M und 970M einpendeln (siehe dies GPUs für Gaming Benchmarks).

Vorgestellt wurde sie erstmals von Alienware auf Twitter: "The newest @AMDRadeon R9 370 and M390X with 4GB VRAM standard now available at http://www.alienware.com !".

Die R9-M390X basiert auf die 3. Generation der GCN Architektur und bietet verbesserte Farbkompression und Tessellation Performance. Der Chip Unterstützt DirectX 12 Feature Level 12_0 in Hardware, Mantle, Vulkan und OpenGL 4.3. Die 32 Compute Units können ausserdem per OpenCL und DirectCompute für generelle Berechnungen angesprochen werden.

Üblicherweise sind die High-End Notebookgrafikkarten mit 100 Watt TDP spezifiziert. Dies würde auch zu den geringeren Taktraten im Vergleich zur M295X passen, die wahrscheinlich mit 125 Watt TDP spezifiziert ist.

AMD Radeon R9 M370X

Die AMD Radeon R9 M370X ist eine im Mitte 2015 vorgestellte DirectX-12-fähige Notebook-Grafikkarte der oberen Mittelklasse. Sie basiert auf der GCN-Architektur (Graphics Core Next) und wird im 28- Nanometer-Prozess gefertigt. Die R9 M370X basiert auf dem älteren GCN 1.0 Cape Verde Chip mit 640 Shadereinheiten und ähnelt damit der AMD Radeon R9 M270 bzw. AMD Radeon R9 M275. Die GPU taktet mit einer Kernfrequenz von 800 MHz, der über ein 128-Bit-Interface angebundene GDDR5-Speicher mit 1.125 MHz (4.500 MHz effektiv).

Eingesetzt wird die R9 M370X im High-End 2015 15-Zoll Retina Apple MacBook Pro mit 2 GB GDDR5 Grafikspeicher. Apple selbst gibt an, dass die R9 M370X eine bis zu 80% höhere Leistung aufweist als die alte Nvidia GeForce GT 750M im Vorgängermodell. Unsere Spielebenchmarks zeigen deutlich kleinere Vorsprünge von gut 30 Prozent, eine konkurrierende Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M ist dagegen nochmals rund 30 Prozent schneller.
