Das MSI Wind U135 ist ein solides Netbook mit akzeptabler Leistung und Akkulaufzeit sowie einem hervorragenden Display und guter Tastatur. Dass der Hersteller Intels neue Pine-Trail-Plattform verbaut, ist subjektiv kaum zu bemerken und nur im Testlabor messbar. Auch die Entscheidung für Windows 7 Starter als Betriebssystem steht für einen kaum spürbaren Generationswechsel, da Anwender so gezwungenermaßen und trotz kompatibler Hardware in der 32-Bit-Vergangenheit festsitzen.

ASUS‘ EeePCs konnten mit der Pinetrail-Plattform bereits überzeugen. Nach dem Test des Wind U135 steht nun fest, dass auch MSIs Pinetrail-Erstling fast auf der ganzen Linie punkten kann. Rein äußerlich ist das U135 ein klassisches Wind. Es besitzt die bekannte Formensprache und ein schickes Gehäuse in Piano-Lack-Optik. Ebenso kann die Verarbeitungsqualität punkten, die auf einem Level mit der übrigen Netbook-Konkurrenz liegt – sich mit ihr aber auch die kratzempfindliche, glänzende Oberfläche teilt.

Netbooks unter 350 Euro

Keines der getesteten Geräte wäre ein Fehlkauf, aber schlussendlich geht doch das Samsung N220 als Sieger aus dem Testfeld hervor. Das Gerät überzeugt durch seinen guten Akku, die nahezu perfekte Tastatur und einem guten Preis von 320 Euro. Auf dem zweiten Platz landet der MSI Wind U135 aufgrund seines guten Bildschirms. Den dritten Podiumsplatz konnte der Asus EeePC 1005PE ergattern - für eine bessere Platzierung fällt der Bildschirm zu dunkel aus. Den vierten Platz sichert sich Dell mit dem Mini 10.

Das Wind U135 von MSI ist ein grundsolides, typisches Netbook. Intel hat zwar neue Hardware beigesteuert, auf das Leistungsniveau der kleinen Mini-Laptops hat diese aber kaum Auswirkungen. Nach wie vor bleiben die Netbooks bei dem, was sie am besten können: Leicht, günstig und zum Surfen, Musikhören oder YouTube-Videos abspielen ausreichend stark sein. Auch die Anschlüsse und die Qualität der Lautsprecher haben sich im Vergleich zu den Vorgänger-Netbooks nicht verändert.

Den Preis rechtfertigt es mit seinem hellen und kontraststarken Bildschirm, der aber spiegelt, der ordentlichen Tastatur sowie dem integrierten Bluetooth. Für eine Spitzenplatzierung in der Netbook-Rangliste fällt die Akkulaufzeit aber zu schwach aus.

Aufgrund der nahezu identischen Ausstattung von MSI Wind U135 und Asus Eee PC 1005PE fällt es schwer, eine Entscheidung für eines der beiden Netbooks zu treffen. Im Gegensatz zum Asus-Gerät liegt dem Wind U135 mit der Windows 7 Starter Edition lediglich ein Betriebssystem bei. Außerdem lässt das Gerät auch kein Aufrüsten des Arbeitsspeichers oder der Festplatte zu. Dafür arbeitet im MSI Wind U135 ein sehr guter Bildschirm - der aber wiederum merklich mehr Strom als der des Asus-Pendants benötigt.

Das Hannstar HSD100IFW1 Panel in 10-Zoll hat einen Kontrast von 1043:1. Ein bis dato nicht erreichter Spitzenwert in der Netbook-Kategorie. Die 250 GByte Festplatte von Fujitsu liest mit sehr guten 74 MByte/s.

"The best design offers ultimate ease and joy." – das soll der MSI Chief Industrial Designer in Zusammenhang mit dem Wind U135 verlautbart haben. Nun, das einfache Handling des Netbooks können wir grundsätzlich bestätigen, mit der Freude am Design ist das aber so eine Sache. Die hohe Neigung zur Verschmutzung unseres schwarzen Testsystems trübt unserer Meinung nach sehr rasch das anfängliche Hochgefühl. Hinzu kommt auch das Glare Type Display, das zwar grundsäzlich respektabel Messdaten zeigt, bei ungünstigen Lichtverhältniss allerdings das Nachsehen zu Displays mit matter Oberfläche hat.

Though the dimension remain the same, the newest features include an Intel’s Atom N450 1.66GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 160GB of hard disk space. Due to the efficient, low power consuming atom processor, the battery life for this laptop is above average and is impressive for true mobility.

Two years on and MSI hasn’t messed with the formula too much for the new Wind U135 and with the lid closed, you can’t tell the two models apart. The MSI Wind U135 certainly has its flaws. We don’t like the fact that MSI still doesn’t trust its consumers to swap out the RAM module or hard drive without voiding the warranty. Most other manufacturers provide access panels to make this easy, yet MSI still don’t want you meddling inside the system. This means you’re stuck with 1GB RAM and a HDD unless you’re not bothered about the warranty. Since many consumers like to upgrade RAM or install a SDD into their netbooks I really hope this is a stance that MSI changes soon.

Using the MSI Wind U135 is a pleasure when it comes to typing, except for the irritation of that small right-hand shift key - we often found we hit the neighbouring up arrow, moving the cursor into the line above when typing. Still, we otherwise appreciate the quality of the keyboard given that this is a relatively affordable device. Poor sound is a bit of a surprise, detracting from what are otherwise fairly typical specs for a standard netbook.

The MSI Wind U135 looks and performs well for a netbook, keeping pace with its competitors. Its price of $329 also makes it less expensive than the ASUS 1005PE ($379) and even the budget conscious Samsung N130 ($349). However, battery life takes a step back, especially considering that the Atom N450 is supposed to offer greater endurance than the previous generation of Atom chips. If you can swing the extra $50, we recommend the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE and its 5 extra hours of work and play time. But, if you’re really watching the bottom line, the U135 is worth a look.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Integrierte (shared memory) Grafikkarte welche im Prozessor Intel Atom N4xx integriert ist. Basiert laut Intel auf einen "optimierten" X3100 Kern, ist jedoch nur minimal schneller als der alte GMA 950. Daher für HD Videos und 3D Spiele nicht geeignet.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order"  sondern  "in  Order"  ausgeführt  werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.

N450: Intel Atom CPU für Netbooks mit integriertem DDR2 Speichercontroller und GMA 3150 Grafik. Die Leistung ist nur etwas besser eine Kombination aus N270 / GMA950, jedoch ist der gesamte Stromverbrauch deutlich besser. 10.1": Es handelt sich um ein kleines Displayformat für Subnotebooks bzw. sind 10 Zoll das Standardformat für Netbooks. Der Vorteil der Mini-Notebooks liegt darin, dass das Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das vergleichsweise kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten relativ anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar wegen zu kleiner Schrift- und Icongröße.

Als Notebook-Hersteller ist MSI erst seit 2005 einem breiteren Publikum bekannt und vermarktet seine Mobilcomputer weltweit, allerdings mit eher bescheidenen Marktanteilen.

77.35%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
