EN→DEMaybe you should buy the next one. Or the one after that. Or one a few generations down the line. Or just the first one that isn’t made by Huawei, because fantastic as the company’s hardware can be, I’m still not convinced it’s worth giving up proper Google support. But while the Mate XT may be the first trifold, I’m confident it won’t be the last. And this hardware, with Google and 5G, for two-thirds the price, and a generation or two of durability improvements? You should buy that phone.

The Huawei Mate XT, the world's first "tri-fold" (really a bi-fold) phone. This is a long term review after three months of use. I love the hardware and think this is the future of mobile. This is the phone form factor that many people will have by 2029 or 2030. The Mate XT features a single foldable OLED display that transforms from 6.4-inch to 7.9-inch to 10.2-inch. It's powered by the Kirin 9100 and features a 5,600 mAh battery.

EN→DEAfter 24 hours with Huawei’s Mate XT — a.k.a. the world’s first trifold smartphone — I have this to say for it: the novelty hasn’t worn off. I’ve tried the Mate XT twice before, first shortly after it launched last September, and then again in February after it was released outside of China. But now Huawei is ready to actually let me review its one-of-a-kind hardware, which at today’s exchange rates would set you back just under $4,000. I’ll be spending the next week with my SIM card in the Mate XT, as I get used to life with triple the usual space and none of the usual Google Mobile Services support, but one day in, I figured I’d share my first — or is it third? — impressions and a bunch of pictures.

EN→DEThe Huawei Mate XT Ultimate delivers on what it promises - it's a work of art when it comes to exterior and mechanical design, an immersive trifold screen like nothing you have seen before, and a versatile camera that captures impressive photos (as convertible devices go). But then comes the mediocre performance, uncertain app future, and lack of Google Mobile Services and a recent Android API support. Plus Huawei has no access to 5G technology outside China. Some of these shortcomings could have been acceptable if the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate did not cost €3,500. If the eye-watering price tag is not enough to scare you away, then most probably nothing else will - the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is the only mainstream trifold smartphone right now and if you want such a device, this is it.

EN→DEEver since Huawei launched the tri-folding Huawei Mate XT smartphone back in September 2024, we have been eagerly awaiting the day it graces our sunny shores. Unfortunately, Huawei has just held the global launch event for the Mate XT in Malaysia, and we were informed that the tri-foldable smartphone will not be made available for purchase in Singapore. That's right, the one Huawei phone that people here might buy because of its unique folding style. If your heart is set on the phone, there are ways of getting your hands on one (read: look across the border). Disappointment aside, we were lucky enough to have a bit of time with the foldable smartphone, so here's what we think about it.

EN→DEAll in all, in our opinion, the HUAWEI Mate XT is designed for those who demand the cutting edge of consumer technology. For the time being, owning one is definitely a luxury and a flex (no pun intended). Professionals in face-to-face business meetings can dish it out as a nice icebreaker of sorts, or maybe even small-talk their way with it, catapulting them to making the sale. And tech-gurus can just rave about how they own the first commercially available trifold phone in the world! Needless to say, HUAWEI has once again set a new benchmark in the smartphone industry, proving its leadership in hardware advancements. While the Mate X6 positioned itself as a premium yet affordable foldable, the Mate XT is an unparalleled achievement in the ongoing history that is foldable smartphones.

EN→DEFoldable smartphones have always been pricey, but the Huawei Mate XT takes them to another level. Although it won't be available in Singapore, the phone will retail for RM14,999 (approximately S$4,500), a hair above our earlier estimate of S$4,400. It's not something everybody can afford, and the price is undoubtedly eye-watering. However, we think it's worth it if you value productivity and having a large screen for your primary device. If you consider that the Huawei Mate XT can essentially be both a smartphone and tablet in one, the price isn't too outrageous since you don't have to buy another tablet with the Mate XT in hand. Unfortunately, the Huawei Mate XT will not be coming to Singapore. The phone will only be sold outside of China in Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Cambodia.

EN→DEThe Mate XT is an impressive feat of engineering from HUAWEI. I’m blown away by how the brand overcame the technical challenges to make this phone a reality. My only remaining questions concern long-term durability because of the exposed foldable screen.

EN→DEThe Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design is a bold, visionary product, quite possibly paving the way for the future of smartphones. As the first tri-fold phone, it is far from perfect, but it gives us a glimpse of the extraordinary possibilities for multitasking, media consumption, and productivity on the phones of the future. In a market where customers have long been complaining of phones that don’t improve much from year to year, the Mate XT is exactly the type of radical innovation we want to see more of. It’s bold, it’s beautiful, it’s aggressive. Frankly, for all its politically-inflicted shortcomings, the Huawei Mate XT is a technological meisterwerk.

Before folding phones, I was … content. I was, to quote Macbeth, “whole as the marble.” And then a couple ambitious companies proved it was possible to fit more into your pocket – and after that, well, each time I was forced back onto a regular phone, I felt “cabin’d, cribbed, confined.” So I dove with both feet into this new frontier – and for a few years I stabilized, grateful for the new normal. And then, this fall, one of the same companies that first made phones flexible decided to give us even more.

EN→DEThe Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design is a bold, visionary product, paving the way for the future of smartphones. As the first tri-fold device, it brings new possibilities for multitasking, media consumption, and productivity. My honest take is that its exorbitant price right now shouldn’t bother us. Personally, I’m thinking less about this product in particular, and more about the tri-fold phones that are going to come in the future, further perfecting this form-factor and making it more accessible. Make no mistake, though, the Mate XT product itself is eXTremely impressive. This isn’t just a phone – it’s a bold statement about the future of mobile devices. While foldables have been around for a few years now, the Mate XT demonstrates that something even bigger, better and more innovative is right around the corner. I can’t wait.

EN→DEThe Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition is big, gold and a rather miraculous achievement. The big shame is that with such an exotic and exciting piece of hardware, it doesn’t have the Google Play Store or Google’s core apps installed out of the box, and that means it can be a faff to get the software you want installed. It’s also ludicrously expensive. But does that matter? Do those facts make this phone any less of a marvel? In my humble opinion, not really. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is, quite simply, the most ambitious piece of smartphone design I’ve come across in my long years as a technology journalist. It may not be practical but it is a wonder of engineering and product design. Admire it simply for that.

EN→DEHuawei has managed to design an incredible foldable phone that will surely leave many users stunned when they look at the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate smartphone. Its large display is impressive, and the mechanism that unfolds the phone is mesmerizing. In terms of design and display, this is the best foldable phone out there and it has no competition worthy of a challenge. You will have a blast of time using this phone no matter which screen you choose. The camera performance is also exceptional and can even beat the likes of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 in many scenarios. The same goes for the battery life.

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design is a dual-hinge 'tri-fold' (not really) smartphone that just launched in China, boasting some solid camera tech and specs. Which MAY be next week, if the Internet is sorted and I actually have the camera unpacked.
