Mit einer Gerätebreite von knapp 40 Zentimetern ist das Compaq 8710w von HP alles andere als ein kompakter Winzling. Aber im großen Gehäuse steckt dafür auch alles, was ein leistungsstarkes Desktop-Replacement ausmacht. Doch das Gerät soll mehr sein, nämlich mobile Workstation. Plus: Leistungsstarker Prozessor; Flotte 3D-Grafikkarte; Zusätzlicher Zahlenblock. Minus: Lüfter teilweise sehr laut; Konzeptbedingt recht groß

Wie auch schon das HP 8710p konnte nun auch das HP Compaq 8710w im Test überzeugen. Zum einen bietet das robuste Business Chassis mit hochwertigen Materialien eine solide Basis um auch einem intensiven täglichen Einsatz gerecht zu werden, und zum anderen lässt das nüchterne Design keine Zweifel über die Bestimmung des HP 8710w aufkommen - der professionelle Einsatz im 3D und CAD Bereich. Speziell dafür bietet das DTR Notebook sowohl eine umfangreiche Schnittstellenausstattung mit sechs USB Ports und HDMI Port direkt am Gerät, als auch eine Docking Option mit der eine Reihe von weiteren Anschlüssen zur Verfügung stehen bzw. ein möglicher Kabelsalat neben dem Notebook verhindert werden kann. Auch die Eingabegeräte kommen professionellen Anwendern durchaus entgegen, bieten sie doch ein sehr großzügiges Layout und einen zusätzlichen Nummernblock zur raschen Zahleneingabe.

Für ein Profi-Notebook hat HPs Mobile Workstation Compaq 8710w ein angemessenes bis gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung für unser Testgerät liegt bei 2590,- Euro.
Dafür gibt es ein sehr gut verarbeitetes Notebook mit 3 Jahre Hersteller-Garantie. Im Inneren stecken der schnellste T7000er-Prozessor Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 mit 2,4 GHz und 2048 MByte RAM. Genug für gute 681,2 Punkte beim PassMark Performance Test. Als Betriebssystem ist Windows XP Professional SP2 auf der 120-GByte Festplatte (7200 rpm!) installiert. Zur flotten CPU gesellt sich eine leistungsfähige Nvidia-Grafikkarte Quadro FX 1600M mit 512 MByte eigenem Speicher. Sie kam in unserem Test auf 111.009 Aquamark-Punkte und 4.722 Punkte beim 3DMark06.

If you are the one that can use full potential of HP Compaq 8710w than price of this notebook (around 2600€) shouldn’t be much of a problem. Bear in mind that with HP Compaq 8710w (KE191ET#ABH Model) you don’t pay for fancy design or sticker of some well known and established brand name (such as car manufacturer), but for performances. One thing is for sure: for your money you get extremely powerful premium quality notebook.

The HP Compaq 8710w is an updated version of the nw9440 mobile workstation, and HP has done more than just plumb in Intel's Santa Rosa motherboard-chip-wireless combo. The HP Compaq 8710w boasts an innovative touchpanel, a new graphics chip with an HDMI output and the option to run Windows Vista.
The HP Compaq 8710w is still an ugly sister to the 17in MacBook Pro's Cinderella, but its matte grey flash is an improvement over its predecessor's dull black and HP has kept the HP Compaq 8710w's best case-design feature: icons for all of the ports around the keyboard, making it easy to find the right port without moving the laptop. The HP Compaq 8710w has a responsive keyboard with a numeric keypad, and a choice of trackpad - with three buttons and a vertical scrollbar - or pointer (not that we've ever met anyone who actually prefers a pointer to a trackpad).

The HP 8710w Mobile Workstation is HP's top-shelf desktop replacement notebook for business. It is based on the new Intel Santa Rosa Centrino Pro platform and features a powerful Nvidia Quadro FX 1600M graphics card. The 8710w is not a flashy machine and nor should it be. It has clean lines and a professional business class look. Up close the 8710w looks sophisticated yet simple. Everything on the machine is there for a reason. The 8710w is one of the slimmest and lightest 17” notebooks around – it starts at 8.5 pounds and has a chassis only 1.3” thin. The 8710w is constructed out of durable plastic with an inner shell of magnesium. The outside of the lid, the palm rests, and the area directly below the LCD are of a silky smooth yet durable slate gray. All of the other areas are of heavy-duty granular black plastic. It is extremely difficult to get any part of the 8710w to flex - it is one of the most solid machines I have come across. Although the chassis is quite thin, it hardly moves when twisted.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
