There is no denying that the Sony VAIO VPC-EB13FX/BIX ($999.99 list) is a feature-packed, mainstream laptop that offers more than enough performance to satisfy most folks' needs from a sub-$1,000 machine with lots of entertainment potential. What Costco customer would pooh-pooh a Blu-ray drive, HDMI and eSATA ports, a 500GB hard drive, and even an ExpressCard/34 slot? But a laptop is more than the sum of its parts. Below-average battery life, no real 3D gaming performance to speak of, and a few design flaws, all detract from its appeal, especially when you can find the same feature set in another laptop that has better battery life and costs less.

Sony laptops have always been a good-looking bunch, but they have typically carried a price premium. Not anymore: The Sony's VAIO VPC-EB13FXBI (known hereafter as the EB Series), available at Costco for $799.99 (list) fuses solid construction and quality components with Sony's style. If you want a sharp multimedia laptop that offers leading performance, the VAIO VPCEB13FXBI is an affordable choice.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

430M: Der Core i5-430M besitzt im Vergleich zum i7-640 nur 3MB L3 Cache und taktet zwischen 2.26-2.53 GHz (je nach Auslastung dank Turbo Mode). VT-d, Trusted Execution und AES Funktionen fehlen dem 430M jedoch. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung).
