The Asus U45J is a great notebook in terms of design and features. It takes the same technology we first saw in their N15J notebook and this time comes is a much smaller and easy to carry package. The notebook is nice and slim and lightweight with a good battery life. However, when you need the power, it doesn't fall short. The Core i5 coupled with the Nvidia 310M gives you a pretty good multimedia performance, be it older games or watching HD movies. There's also plenty of storage for all your data and the chiclet keyboard is very comfortable to type on for extended periods. The notebook has one flaw though. The build quality just isn't up to the mark and this is not something we expect from Asus. Since they've primarily used plastic to keep the weight down and keep it slim, the display does not have adequate protection. The fact that the screen can distort (permanently if your unlucky) very easily with just a light tap at the back means you'll have to be extra careful with this notebook. If Asus was planning on charging a slight premium for this, the least they could do is use some aluminium or other metal for the lid at the cost of making it a bit heavier. We've informed Asus about this issue and we're hoping they will rectify this before it's launched in India or in their later revisions. Overall, the Asus U45J offers a good balance of battery life and performance, thanks to Optimus in a compact and lightweight package. The only thing that puts me off is the plasticky feel of the notebook and poor protection for the screen. This makes the price of the notebook seem a bit on the higher side.

The bundled software has been pared down slightly from the U30Jc-A1’s 59 applications. It still includes a host of Asus utilities, which can now be accessed simultaneously through the Control Deck. This is still a hefty array of preinstalled applications, but it appears that each program may prove useful to some subset of the diverse crowd for whom this notebook is intended.

The ASUS U45Jc-A1 ($899) is one of the better thin-and-light notebooks we've tested this year, thanks to its long endurance, strong performance, and slick design. However, the less-than-stellar build quality prevents us from giving this laptop a higher rating or an Editor's Choice award. Although it's not as powerful and doesn't last as long on a charge, the 14-inch ASUS UL80Jt-A1 ($849) offers a sturdier chassis. The Gateway ID49C08u ($849) and the Samsung Q430 ($829) deliver better performance than both of these ASUS machines but don't last as long on a charge. We like the U45Jc, but we don't quite love it.

Das Unternehmen hat weltweit 100.000 Angestellte, die meisten davon in China, wohin der Großteil der Produktion schon vor einiger Zeit ausgelagert wurde. Im Geschäftsbereich mit dem Markennamen Asus fertigt das Unternehmen Notebooks, Komplettsysteme und PC-Bauteile für Endkunden. Asus betreibt Niederlassungen in Deutschland, Italien, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Spanien, Russland und den USA sowie ein europäisches Servicecenter in Tschechien. Mit dem Eee PC hat Asus 2008 den Netbook-Boom ausgelöst.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: Die GeForce 310M ist die Nachfolgerkarte der G 210M und technisch nur durch 30MHz mehr Shadertakt verschieden. Es gibt jedoch auch Versionen mit einem geringeren Kerntakt von 606 MHz.

Intel Core i5:

520M: Der Core i5-520M besitzt im Vergleich zum i7-640 nur 3MB L3 Cache und taktet zwischen 2.4-2.93 GHz (je nach Auslastung dank Turbo Mode). Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

Intel Core i3:

370M: Der Core i3-370M taktet etwas höher als der Core i5-430M, jedoch ohne Turbo Boost und geringer getaktete GPU. Dadurch läuft die CPU mit maximal 2.4 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). 

14.0: 14 Zoll Display-Grösse stellt ein Mittelding zwischen den kleinen Subnotebook-Formaten und dem 15 Zoll-Standard-Display dar. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Diese Subnotebooks sind deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, stellen aber die höhere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 13 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

2.2 kg:

75.33%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
