Despite some shortcomings, the IdeaPad Y460 is a good portable entertainment notebook that can handle movies, games and video editing. For $999 as equipped it provides a great deal of value; allowing a user to have one notebook that adapts to their needs by switching between integrated and dedicated graphics. If you are looking for a portable entertainment notebook that can ramp up to handle intense tasks when needed you should add the Y460 to your list.

It's not enough for a 14-inch notebook to deliver decent runtimes, a little processor grunt and pleasing looks any more; now we expect graphical excellence too. In response, Lenovo have outfitted their IdeaPad Y460 with a dedicated ATI Radeon GPU, and they've even thought to put a switch on the front which allows you to turn it off when you're feeling more spreadsheet than gaming minded. Though you pay a premium for parts that can run any application, you're getting a laptop that you won't need to upgrade for years.The Editors' Choice Asus UJ30c-A1 is not as powerful, but it's more affordable, has longer battery life, and is equipped with a more seamless switchable graphics technology.

Those looking for a portable multimedia notebook with strong enough graphics performance to play demanding games will find a lot to like in the IdeaPad Y460. However, at $1,049, it’s a bit expensive for a multimedia system that doesn’t have Blu-ray or a high-res screen. Some may prefer the heavier 15-inch Samsung R580, which comes standard with a Blu-ray reader and costs more than $200 less. And if gaming is your main goal, you might want to go for the 15-inch Acer Aspire 5740G ($749). But if you care about mobility and don’t want to sacrifice power, the Y460 is a high-quality notebook.

Portability, excellent performance, and a bold, eye-catching design are all good reasons to choose the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 as your next thin-and-light notebook. Unfortunately, the whole point of switchable graphics is to offer the choice between performance and battery life, but for this notebook, the best battery life you can get is still pretty short, making this a moot point.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Nachfolger der 4650 mit DirectX 11 und bereits in 40nm gefertigt. Kann von 450-650 MHz getaktet werden.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

330M: Der Core i3-330M ist ein Mittelklasse Dual-Core Prozessor ohne Turbo Boost Modus. Daher läuft die CPU mit max. 2.13 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). 14.0": 14 Zoll Display-Grösse stellt ein Mittelding zwischen den kleinen Subnotebook-Formaten und dem 15 Zoll-Standard-Display dar. 77%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
