Ein gutes Netbook muss eine lange Akkulaufzeit, ein ergonomisches Display und eine gute Tastatur haben: Das Samsung N120 landet in zwei der drei Kategorien einen Volltreffer - die Akkulaufzeit ist ebenso hervorragend wie die Tastatur. Das mittelmäßige Display trübt den sehr guten Gesamteindruck - trotzdem setzt sich das Samsung N120 an die Spitze der Netbook-Rangliste.

Das Samsung N120 kann in einigen Bereichen mit willkommenen Detailverbesserungen aufwarten, leistet sich aber ausgerechnet bei der wichtigsten Schnittstelle zum Nutzer, dem Display, einen gravierenden Rückschritt. So gefallen vor allem die gute Soundausgabe, die erhöhte Batterielaufzeit mit gleichzeitig verringertem Gewicht, die verbesserte (weil größere) Tastatur und das erfreulich geringe Geräuschniveau. Unverständlich hingegen, ist Samsungs Abkehr vom guten Display des NC10, hin zu einem deutlich schlechteren Produkt. Neben der nun glänzenden Oberfläche, die sehr einschränkende Spiegelungen hervorruft, muss man außerdem mit sichtbar geringeren Helligkeits- und Kontrastwerten zurecht kommen.

Samsung nutzt beim N120 den durch das große Gehäuse gewonnen Platz nicht optimal aus. Touchpad und Tastatur fallen deutlich größer aus als bei der Netbook-Konkurrenz, zudem steht der Akku nicht nach hinten ab. Dadurch gestaltet sich die Bedienung recht angenehm. Der für ein Netbook gute Klang des Geräts hat seine Kehrseiten: Wegen der im Gehäusedeckel verbauten Boxen fällt das Display mit zehn Zoll für diese Gehäusegröße deutlich zu klein aus. Das Samsung N120 stellt mit einem aktuellen Verkaufspreis von 370 Euro eine annehmbare Alternative zu herkömmlichen Netbooks dar, kann sich jedoch gegen Platzhirsche wie dem Asus EeePC 1000HE nicht behaupten.

Die Idee, ein Netbook mit größerer Tastatur anzubieten, ohne die Preise eines meist teueren Subnotebooks zu verlangen, ist gescheitert. Das Display ist zu dunkel, kontrastarm und nicht entspiegelt. Damit ist der Outdoor-Einsatz hinfällig. Auch die Akkulaufzeit mit fünf Stunden ist nicht mehr als ultimatives Kaufargument zu betrachten.

Samsung's netbook range is pretty large with several models in the frame. The N120 is not the newest in the range, nor is it called a netbook - Samsung prefers the term ‘mini notebook' - but we have to say we found it very usable during testing and we like it for all that. The N120 is a superb little computer. Samsung's reluctance to call it a netbook belies its potential which stops at multimedia rich, processor rich, screen hogging applications. But as a basic computer with a good battery life, it does well.

Once upon a time, Samsung's netbook line-up was simple. With just the NC10 and NC20 to choose from, it was a welcome departure from the never-ending sprawl of Asus' Eee PC range. The N120 does little wrong. Just short of ten hours of light-use battery life is more than ample, and the bright, glossy display is free from any serious problems. Its greatest flaw, though, is that both the NC10 and N110 are better, cheaper all-rounders.

Samsung's widened netbook design packs a serious audio punch. It's a proper media machine, really. If only the glossy black screen had a wider viewing angle, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for watching downloaded movies on the train. As it is, it's pretty tricky to spend any real time watching movies on a screen which changes colour with the slightest move of your head.

  With so many netbooks now on the market - and so many different interpretations of the genre - saying that any particular one is the best has become a little pointless. That's not going to stop us saying the the N120 is certainly one of the best, though. The excellent keyboard and screen make it a very easy machine to live with and use, while the 2.1 speaker system does actually live up to Samsung's claim that this is a media optimised machine. Such a shame then that there are so many better-value offerings to match it.

  At the end of the day Samsung’s N120 netbook is a very strong netbook. This seemed inevitable given how good the NC10 was though, so to a certain extent the attraction of the N120 is limited–after all, it doesn’t really offer much that the older system does not. Throw the N110 into the mix as well and it becomes a tough call on which to pick. With all that considered, the N120 is still one of the best netbooks on the market today. It comes with a slight price premium, as do many Samsung products, but for that extra money you get a finely-tuned product with some small, but nice-to-have tweaks.

In additional to the fairly generic N110 Netbook, Samsung also offers a slightly tweaked version for those who find Netbook keyboards too small and Netbook speakers too wimpy. The Samsung N120 takes the N110's basic component sent and jams in a keyboard of the sort we'd normally find on a larger 12-inch laptop, along with a 2.1-speaker sound system, that offers at least a modest amount of thump (if you keep your expectations realistic). Part of Samsung's second generation of Netbooks, the N120 offers a generous keyboard and some unexpected audio power.

The keyboard could be improved slightly, and we're not big fans of the glossy screen, but on the whole, it's a very good machine. Just don't buy into the 'subwoofer' hype. The N120 is a very good netbook. You might not care for its relatively large chassis, but it has a comfortable (if slightly flawed) keyboard and fabulous battery life. It's almost -- but not quite -- as good as the Eee PC 1000HE.

But the fun doesn't stop here. Continuing this success is the Samsung N120 (12GBK) ($470 street), a 10-inch netbook that hones in on the typing experience, much like its predecessors. Its full-size keyboard is a rarity on a netbook, and its parts are consistent with those of some of the top netbooks in the market. The only pitfall is its price, which is about $100 more than that of the ASUS EeePC 1000HE and the Acer Aspire One (10-inch). Full-size keyboards on a netbook are few and far between, but the Samsung N120 has figured out how to do it.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM/C/Z/ME/ML Chipsätzen und Nachfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order"  sondern  "in  Order"  ausgeführt  werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.

N270: Stromsparende und billige CPU mit schwacher Leistung und geringem Stromverbrauch. 10.1": Es handelt sich um ein kleines Displayformat für Subnotebooks bzw. sind 10 Zoll das Standardformat für Netbooks. Der Vorteil der Mini-Notebooks liegt darin, dass das Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das vergleichsweise kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten relativ anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar wegen zu kleiner Schrift- und Icongröße.

80.53%: Diese Bewertung muss man eigentlich als durchschnittlich ansehen, denn es gibt etwa ebenso viele Notebooks mit besseren Beurteilungen wie Schlechteren. Die Verbalbeurteilungen klingen aber oft besser als sie wirklich sind, denn richtig gelästert wird über Notebooks eher selten. Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigen" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
