After two years of sticking with one look, HP has revamped its best-selling "dv" series notebooks with a new design and core components. The HP Pavilion dv2000z ($1,354.99 direct, as tested) is a thin and light laptop that draws its inspiration from the artwork of Japanese Zen rock gardens. It sports a shinier finish and unique patterns that don't overwhelm the entire look. Under the hood, HP continues to back AMD's latest Turion X2 processors, which might save you some money down the road, but which haven't been quite adept at catching up to the speedier Intel Core Duo solutions.

Boasting a slick new look and an array of multimedia features, the HP Pavilion dv2000z is a traveling entertainment center that is sure to turn heads. However, we strongly suggest skipping the AMD verison of this system in favor of the Intel-powered dv2000t, which offers faster dual-core performance along with nearly an hour more of battery life. Weighing 5.3 pounds and measuring just one-inch thick, this machine is decked out in HP’s new Imprint finish, featuring a high gloss piano-black lid and a shiny silver-and-black keyboard. Both the interior and exterior sport an intricate embedded wave pattern. The exterior finish is gorgeous, but be forewarned: Fingerprint smudges will stick out like a sore thumb.

With the release of the Pavilion dv2000, HP inaugurates a new look and feel for its Pavilion line of laptops. Departing from the familiar matte silver and black case, the dv2000 has sleek rounded edges, a high-gloss finish (which HP says is particularly scratch resistant), and a subtle Zen wave design on the lid. Looks aside, however, the Pavilion dv2000 sticks to the same basic script as previous Pavilion models: you get a strong set of components and most of the features that a home user will want for a competitive price (it starts at $830). HP has also upped the ante with the dv2000's processor options: you can configure it with either an Intel Core Solo or Core Duo, or AMD Sempron or Turion 64 X2 processors. Unfortunately, the AMD-based dv2000z we tested offered below-average performance and battery life that just couldn't keep up with that of similar laptops that feature Intel processors, most notably HP's own Compaq Presario V3000.
