Beim "Unpacked 2013 Episode 2" Event in Berlin stellte Samsung neue Versionen des Galaxy Note 3 Phablets und des Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablets (die sogenannte 2014 Edition) vor. Weiters bestätigen sich auch die Gerüchte über eine Smartwatch namens Galaxy Gear.
Das Galaxy Note 3 erhält ein umfangreiches Refresh. Wie bereits beim Galaxy S4 wird das gerät kleiner und leichter, erhält aber trotzdem einen größeren Bildschirm und eine verbesserte Leistung und Akkulaufzeit. Die Rückseite ist nun mit einer Lederoberfläche (Kunst?) überzogen, die eine deutlich höherwertigere Haptik verspricht.
SoC gibt es wie beim Galaxy S4 zwei Versionen, die 3G Version mit Samsungs bekannten Octacore Exynos 5420 (vermutlich) und die LTE Verison mit einem Quad-Core von Qualcomm (Snapdragon 600 oder 800?). Der nun 5,68-Zoll Amoled Touchscreen löst mit einer Auflösung von 1920x1080 Pixeln auf und reagiert auch auf die Eingaben des mitgelieferten und verbesserten S-Pen Stifts. 3 GB RAM, Category 4 Multiple Bands LTE, 13 Megapixel Kamera mit 1080p 60fps bzw. 4K Videos (je nach Modell) und HCRI LED flash (CRI:85-90) und UHQA Ultra High Quality Audio zählen zu den technischen Verbesserungen.
Auch bei der mitgelieferten Software stockt Samsung kräftig auf. Besonders das verfeinerte Multitasking wurde deutlich weiterentwickelt. Auch bei der Akkulaufzeit soll das neue Note im Vergleich zum Vorgänger zugelegt haben. Samsung gibt 13 versus 9 Stunden Akkulaufzeit bei 1080p Videowiedergabe an.
Auch vom Galay Note 10.1 gibt es eine neue Version, welche den Beisatz "2014 Edition" trägt. Herausstechende Neuheiten sind die schnellen SoCs aus dem Note, der 10.1 WQXGA 2560x1600 Pixel Touchscreen mit S Pen Funktion und ein etwas verringertes Gewicht.
Die Galaxy Gear genannte Smartwatch ist die echte Neuerung. Sie funktioniert in Verbindung mit dem neuen Note 3 und Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. Später soll per Softwareupdate auch das Galaxy Note 2, S4 und S3 unterstüzt werden. Die Uhr kann mittels 1.63" 320x320 Super Amoled Touchscreen oder Sprachbefehle bedient werden. Neben den üblichen Features wie schnelle Anzeige der Uhrzeit und Notifications, bietet die Smartwatch eine integrierte 1.9 Megapixel Kamera für schnelle Schnappschüsse und Dank Micro und Lautsprecher die Möglichkeit als Headset zu funktionieren (bei gewöhnungsbedürftiger Handhaltung zum Ohr). Der integrierte Akku soll laut Samsung eine Akkulaufzeit von 25 Stunden (und mehr) ermöglichen.
Note 3 und Galaxy Gear sollen ab 25. September erhältlich sein, das Note 10.1 folgt im Oktober, wo alle Geräte auch weltweit verfügbar sein sollen.
