Mit seinem entspiegelten Bildschirm empfiehlt sich das TCL NXTPAPER 60 Ultra im Test vor allem für ausgedehnte Lesesessions mit E-Books und langen Online-Artikeln. Auf sehr großen 7,2 Zoll liefert das „NXTPAPER 4.0“-Panel eine sehr ruhige, augenschonende Darstellung mit hoher Schärfe und geschmeidigen 120 Hertz. Dafür fallen die Maximalhelligkeit und die Farbdynamik sichtbar geringer aus und auch an die matte Oberfläche müssen wir uns beim Scrollen zunächst noch gewöhnen. Über einen seitlichen Schalter lässt sich ein spezieller Tintenmodus aktivieren, der Inhalte in Schwarz-Weiß anzeigt und das Lesen zusätzlich erleichtert. Auch softwareseitig passt das Konzept, etwa mit einer KI-Buchanalyse, über die sich Fragen zum aktuellen Text stellen lassen.

Mit dem Nxtpaper 60 Ultra (ab 430 Euro bei Amazon) beweist TCL, dass man sich auch im heutigen Smartphone-Einerleibrei mit einem sinnvollen Gimmick abheben kann. Das matte Display gefällt, optisch und haptisch, und ist besonders praktisch für Menschen, die sich oft im Freien aufhalten – oder auch in Innenbereichen die Nase voll von spiegelnden Bildschirmen haben. Der ePaper-Modus per Schiebeschalter ist eine nette Ergänzung, die hauptsächlich für Lesebegeisterte Sinn macht, die zumindest ab und zu auf ihren echten eReader verzichten wollen. Schade ist, dass das Smartphone trotz „Ultra“ im Namen leistungs- und designtechnisch nur ein Mittelklasse-Gerät ist. Vielleicht lassen sich ja andere Hersteller vom Nxtpaper 60 Ultra inspirieren - der Traum vom Highend-Smartphone mit mattem Display lebt weiter.

If you want a smartphone that offers a range of different screen modes, the Nxtpaper 60 Ultra is pretty much unparalleled. The Color Ink mode is as good as you'll find on the Remarkable Paper Pro, and the regular e-ink setting is like a Kindle. However, aside from that quite niche capability, there isn't anything here, for its price range, that you won't find anywhere else. The cameras are good, but not anything Samsung or Apple should worry about. The battery life is decent, not great, just decent. And the MediaTek processor is middling. All in all, it's an OK effort, but it really needs you to want e-ink capabilities.

I can accept the weaker performance scores – this isn’t trying to be a powerhouse or ultimate gaming machine – but it would have been nice to see the Nxtpaper 60 Ultra being a bit more competitive on the battery life front. And with such a focus on the display, the lack of OLED technology, and the softer contrast ratio it brings, feels like a missed opportunity. With that being said, the TCL Nxtpaper 60 Ultra does something that no other phone is doing right now, bridging the gap between smartphones and e-readers and delivering a phone with a massive display that is a delight to take notes on and can morph into a zen reading space with the literal flick of a switch. It’s not going to be for everyone but those to whom it caters will struggle to find a better fit than this.
