Don’t let that put you off, however. Despite the fact that this is is a bit of Prime Day spin, this is still a very good price for the 13in M4 MacBook Air; it’s our favourite laptop right now, by the way, and for good reason. It’s fast, beautifully made, has a brilliant screen, keyboard and touchpad. The speakers are awsome, battery life is brilliant and it runs completely silently as there’s no fan inside. It is not particularly brilliant at gaming and the 256GB SSD is on the small side – but in every other respect, there’s no better laptop you can buy for £849. If fact, I’d go so far as to say if this is your budget and gaming isn’t a priority, you shouldn’t be looking at anything else. The 13in M4 MacBook Air is the best laptop around and the price is fantastically reasonable. Just don’t call it a Prime Day deal.

After all of my testing and typing was done, I’ve returned to the same conclusion I had last year: the 15-inch MacBook Air M4 is the laptop I’m telling nearly everyone to get. Unless you need a laptop small enough for a seat-back tray on a plane (get the 13-inch MacBook Air or think about the iPad Mini), the combination of a larger display with Apple’s nimble M4 performance and excellent keyboard is hard to argue against. Those who prefer a laptop with a touchscreen should check out the Microsoft Surface Laptop and the Lenovo Slim 7x, and especially the former if you like USB-A. Lastly, anyone who’s got a MacBook Air with M2 or M3? Unless you really need that extra 20% or so performance or really fancy this Sky Blue design, I think you’re already good.

Most people, if they own anything other than a phone, keep only one additional device. If you decide that device should be a laptop, the MacBook Air is the best choice there is. It’s light as a feather and powerful enough to handle everything I could throw at it with absolute grace. Personally, I don’t have room in my life for a MacBook. I always plan on having some manner of desktop Mac to run my Plex server and store my media libraries. I’m happy with my Apple Vision Pro headset for handling lighter work and home entertainment. If I were to add another form factor to the mix, I would sooner grab an iPad for its unique capabilities as a tablet. Still, I was impressed by my time with the M4 Macbook Air for this review. It’s good to know that the vast majority of people who prefer laptops still have an excellent choice.

Furthermore, it now comes with 16GB of memory as standard, which addresses one of our longest-standing and biggest issues with Apple’s base configuration MacBooks. However, it’s not perfect. The Liquid Retina display is starting to look outdated now given that most Windows laptops are steadily transitioning to OLED displays. Throttling can be an issue on longer or more intensive workloads. Also, having just 256GB and two USB-C ports is a bit miserly. Thankfully, none of these are dealbreakers and don’t detract from the fact that, for most people, the MacBook Air is all the MacBook they’ll need.

I’m going to go ahead and give the 2025 MacBook Air 13 a perfect score. It’s about time. To begin with, this might very well be the perfect 13-inch (or 14-inch) thin-and-light laptop design. It’s solid as a rock, looks great, and is eminently portable given its insane thinness. No, it doesn’t have OLED (yet), but until OLED can provide the same kind of efficiency, it’s not necessarily the best tradeoff for this class of laptop. It’s also very fast, beating out its competition in multi-core performance and demolishing it in single-core speed. And, its battery life maintains the most attractive performance-efficiency ratio over the best Windows has to offer. With a starting price of $1,000 for a very usable configuration, the only reason to pass up the MacBook Air 13 is if you just simply can’t live without Windows. I suspect that this will be fewer and fewer people as time goes by.

While the changes this year are marginal, the MacBook Air with M4 SoC is a better deal for two reasons: First, it comes with a better webcam, better connectivity for displays, and with the unmissable, more powerful SoC, providing it with obvious technical advantages over its predecessor. Unfortunately, these are not large enough technological leaps for existing customers to buy the new model.

There’s nothing to entice anyone happy with their M3 or M2 models, aside from some slight performance gains and a few extra hours of endurance, but if you jumped on the Apple Silicon bandwagon early with the M1 then this is a worthy upgrade. My only real criticism is that the screen is starting to show its age compared to the best laptops and best ultrabooks. It’s perfectly fine, but without ProMotion, a matte option and no OLED variant, this is the only area I want to see upgraded on the next model.

Furthermore, it now comes with 16GB of memory as standard, which addresses one of our longest-standing and biggest issues with Apple’s base configuration MacBooks. However, it’s not perfect. The Liquid Retina display is starting to look outdated now given that most Windows laptops are steadily transitioning to OLED displays. Throttling can be an issue on longer or more intensive workloads. Also, having just 256GB and two USB-C ports is a bit miserly. Thankfully, none of these are dealbreakers and don’t detract from the fact that, for most people, the MacBook Air is all the MacBook they’ll need.

Apple ist auch ein führender Anbieter von Software und Dienstleistungen wie dem App Store, iTunes und iCloud.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

Apple M4 10-Core GPU: Eine integrierte Grafikkarte, die von Apple entwickelt wurde und über 10 Kerne verfügt. Diese iGPU ist in Apple M4 SoCs (sowohl in der 9-Kern- als auch in der 10-Kern-Variante) integriert. Sie verwendet die Unified-Memory-Architektur und unterscheidet sich in Bezug auf die Funktionen nicht allzu sehr von der 10-Kern-M3-GPU. Erste Benchmark-Vergleiche zwischen der 10-Core M4 GPU und der 10-Core M3 GPU deuten auf einen Leistungszuwachs von bis zu 15% hin. 

Apple M4 8-Core GPU: Ein Grafikadapter, der in das kleinste SoC der Apple M4-Serie eingebaut ist, das im Oktober 2024 zusammen mit dem neuen iMac vorgestellt wurde. Es ist nicht klar, ob es sich dabei um einen M4-Grafikprozessor mit 10 Kernen handelt, bei dem zwei Kerne deaktiviert sind, oder ob Apple jetzt einen völlig neuen M4-SoC herstellt, der von vornherein weniger CPU- und GPU-Kerne hat. Seine Leistung soll ungefähr so gut sein wie die der AMD Radeon 760M. Nutzt die 16 oder 24 GB Unified Memory im Chip gemeinsam mit der CPU.

M4 (10 cores): Der Apple M4 (10 Kerne) ist ein System-on-a-Chip auf ARM-Architektur mit 10 CPU-Kernen, einer Neural Engine mit 16 Kernen und einer GPU mit 10 Kernen und RT-Unterstützung. Der M4 wurde im Mai 2024 im Rahmen eines iPad-Launch-Events vorgestellt; er verfügt über 4 Leistungskerne, die mit bis zu 4,4 GHz laufen, was eine deutliche Verbesserung gegenüber dem M3 und dessen Höchsttaktfrequenz von 4,06 GHz darstellt. Außerdem verfügt dieser neue Chip über 4 Performance-Kerne und 6 Effizienz-Kerne, während der M3 mit 4 Performance-Kernen und 4 Effizienz-Kernen auskommen musste.
