The MacBook Air M4 is an easy sell. It’s the complete package for most people, and if you want a better screen or options of a more powerful chip then there’s the MacBook Pro M4. The lower price combined with the bump in memory to 16GB across the board makes this a fantastic deal – how often can that be said about Apple’s products? There’s nothing to entice anyone happy with their M3 or M2 models, aside from some slight performance gains and a few extra hours of endurance, but if you jumped on the Apple Silicon bandwagon early with the M1 then this is a worthy upgrade. My only real criticism is that the screen is starting to show its age compared to the best laptops and best ultrabooks. It’s perfectly fine, but without ProMotion, a matte option and no OLED variant, this is the only area I want to see upgraded on the next model.

In other words, the iPad Air M3 is for those who are buying their first proper tablet or those who are upgrading from vanilla or old iPads. For such users, it is near perfect. The M3 chip, in particular, offers substantial performance, approaching pro-level capabilities, making it a great value.

Ultimately, the M4 MacBook Air is a great laptop but it isn’t a revolution. Apple has reacted to Windows laptops catching up on battery life by dropping the price, upping the base specification and keeping the rest of the laptop as is. That’s mostly good news and it means – after a brief hiatus – the MacBook Air is once more the laptop of choice, stripping that honour away from the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7. It’s the laptop I recommend most people buy if they want a reliable, do-it-all machine capable of everything from writing laptop reviews and watching YouTube to heavy-duty tasks such as 4K video editing and 3D design. Whether it will stay there for long, however, is up to the big Windows laptop box shifters.

The new MacBook Air may not be as seminal a machine as the recently updated Mac Mini, but it’s easily one of the best MacBook Airs Apple has ever released. It’s powerful, well-built, thin and light, has a long battery life, and is even cheaper than the model it replaces. Furthermore, it now comes with 16GB of memory as standard, which addresses one of our longest-standing and biggest issues with Apple’s base configuration MacBooks. However, it’s not perfect. The Liquid Retina display is starting to look outdated now given that most Windows laptops are steadily transitioning to OLED displays. Throttling can be an issue on longer or more intensive workloads. Also, having just 256GB and two USB-C ports is a bit miserly. Thankfully, none of these are dealbreakers and don’t detract from the fact that, for most people, the MacBook Air is all the MacBook they’ll need.

Apple M4 8-Core GPU: Ein Grafikadapter, der in das kleinste SoC der Apple M4-Serie eingebaut ist, das im Oktober 2024 zusammen mit dem neuen iMac vorgestellt wurde. Es ist nicht klar, ob es sich dabei um einen M4-Grafikprozessor mit 10 Kernen handelt, bei dem zwei Kerne deaktiviert sind, oder ob Apple jetzt einen völlig neuen M4-SoC herstellt, der von vornherein weniger CPU- und GPU-Kerne hat. Seine Leistung soll ungefähr so gut sein wie die der AMD Radeon 760M. Nutzt die 16 oder 24 GB Unified Memory im Chip gemeinsam mit der CPU.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

M4 (10 cores): Der Apple M4 (10 Kerne) ist ein System-on-a-Chip auf ARM-Architektur mit 10 CPU-Kernen, einer Neural Engine mit 16 Kernen und einer GPU mit 10 Kernen und RT-Unterstützung. Der M4 wurde im Mai 2024 im Rahmen eines iPad-Launch-Events vorgestellt; er verfügt über 4 Leistungskerne, die mit bis zu 4,4 GHz laufen, was eine deutliche Verbesserung gegenüber dem M3 und dessen Höchsttaktfrequenz von 4,06 GHz darstellt.
