EN→DEThe HP EliteBook X G1i has potential. It’s not very powerful, but it has the horsepower it needs to tackle most people’s workdays and a little extra legroom for some more demanding tasks. What it lacks in raw performance it largely makes up for in efficiency, easily running all day. Paired with an easy-on-the-eyes display that you can run even at very dim levels and still see clearly, and you’ve got a machine that’s properly prepared for productivity. But the price stands in its way. Unless you really need HP’s business features like Wolf Pro Security, the extra cost just isn’t worth it, especially with consumer laptops like the Yoga 9i beating it in almost every way.

EN→DEThere is no shortage of thin and light laptops with marathon batteries. The HP EliteBook X G1a is, comparatively, more focused on providing reliable muscle during working hours. The beefy hardware takes full advantage of the large battery, the abundant ports keep your options open, and the comfortable keyboard acts as an ergonomic command center so you can hunker down and get work done. However, all that hardware can run warm when it's pushed, and this is not a cheap laptop. If you're looking for a 14-inch device that's fully committed to the enterprise use case, it's a solid option, but keep in mind that it's quite specialized for that role. If you're looking for a similar laptop for a little less, I recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 -- another workhorse laptop with lots of connectivity and the same processor around the $1,500 mark.

EN→DEWe've called the ThinkPad X1 Carbon the ultimate business laptop and the best laptop you can buy, period. It's no faint praise to say the EliteBook X G1a elbows its way onto the podium beside it. The Carbon is more than a pound lighter, and we narrowly prefer its keyboard, but "narrowly" signifies a revolution as far as HP is concerned. The EliteBook also backs its improved keys with class-leading performance (though we can't say the same for its battery life), and several conveniences and clever design touches. It deserves an Editors' Choice award among high-end work laptops and a look even if you're considering the Lenovo.

EN→DEIt's a fine business laptop that offers solid performance with solid build quality, but there's not enough of a price gap between it and the EliteBook Ultra to choose it over the flagship model. For only $50 to $150 more (depending on the Ultra's sale price), you get an appreciably lighter design, high-res OLED display and haptic touchpad, all of which aren't included on my $1,849 EliteBook X test system. Sure, you can outfit the EliteBook X with an OLED display, but then the price difference between it and the Ultra all but disappears, making it an even less compelling option.

EN→DEThe HP Elitebook X1 G1a is a solid premium business laptop that sits between thin-and-light business laptops, like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition, and more focused workstations or creative professionals, like the Asus ProArt PX13. It’s not quite as portable as the former or as powerful as the latter, but offers a good compromise between the two extremes. Like most premium business laptops, the Elitebook X1 G1a will struggle to reach a wider audience, as it’s priced similarly to consumer laptops with more powerful hardware. HP says it’s meant for “business leaders,” and the Elitebook X1 G1a’s performance and design will hit the mark with that demographic.

EN→DEHP delivers an expensive business laptop, but the EliteBook G1a 14 AI is the definition of premium. I love the way this laptop feels thanks to its sturdy aluminum chassis, alongside a robust lid, deck, and hinges while staying light and thin. Beyond that, its speakers are powerful and its 2K webcam is crisp. It’s far from a perfect laptop, however, as I would have liked a slightly more colorful and brighter display considering its price point. And while this is just personal preference, its keys are far too squishy. For a fantastic alternative, the MSI Summit 13 AI+ Evo A2VM is $1,599 yet is similarly excellent for business. Otherwise, the HP EliteBook X G1a 14 AI is a great machine.
