Entry-level portable gaming. While Lenovo's Y40 clearly isn't the best choice for hardcore gamers, there's no question that the sleek 14-inch system with its current-generation i7 Haswell CPU, dedicated Radeon GPU and 256 GB SSD has plenty to offer for its $850 asking price, even though the display doesn't quite measure up.

Its noteworthy highlights include a 1080p anti-glare display, attractive design, solid construction, good keyboard and clickpad, and usable performance for most of today’s games. It has a class leading six-plus hour battery life and even great speakers. We wish the display was more colorful and had better viewing angles, but found little else to criticize.

If you buy this laptop to play the latest games, you will be frustrated and disappointed with its poor performance. The Y40 is too pricey to fully recommend as a budget multimedia machine, and simply isn't punchy enough to be a sufficient mobile gaming rig.

It has the Lenovo-ness (simple design, great input ergonomics) that has won the company legions of fans, it’s fast, and it games well enough for the average player. There’s not a lot more you could ask for in a 14-inch laptop in this price range.

Das Lenovo Y40 mit einem Intel Core i7 Prozessor der vierten Generation ist ein portabler Einstiegs-Gaming-Laptop. Er gehört zur Lenovo Y-Serie ("Premium Multimedia Laptops2) und verfügt über einen 14-Zoll-Bildschirm mit einer Auflösung von 1920 x 1080 Pixel, jedoch geringer Helligkeit.
Der Zwei-Kern-Prozessor wird von einem AMD Radeon R9 Grafikadapater, einer Mittelklasse-Grafikkarte, begleitet. Mit dieser laufen anspruchsvollere Spiele mit hohen Auflösungen.
Bei einem Gewicht von nur 2.0 kg, beherbergt das Gerät einen SD-Kartenslot, einen HDMI-Port, Gigabit-Ethernet, 2 USB-3.0-Ports, 1 USB-2.0-Port, einen Stromadapter, eine Kopfhörer-Buchse und einen Kensington-Lock-Slot entlang linker und rechter Seitenkante. Erfreulicherweise bleiben so Vorder- und Rückseite frei von Schnittstellen. Das Lenovo Y40 hat das übliche Problem, dass die Tastatur beim Tippen nachgibt. Die Bilder auf Lenovos Webseite könnten den Eindruck erwecken, dass die Tastatur eine Hintergrundbeleuchtung hat, doch sie ist nur rot gefärbt. Das Multi-Touch-Touchpad arbeitet problemlos und seine Features können entsprechend der Vorlieben des Benutzers konfiguriert werden.
Der Akku hält im WLAN-Test (normales Web-Surfen) ungefähr acht Stunden durch. Unter hoher Last, besonders bei Spielen, fällt die Akkulaufzeit jedoch.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
