Das Samsung X420 ist ein günstiges 14" Notebook mit Standard-Design und klappriger Tastatur, das aber für seine Größe ziemlich leicht ist und auf eine fantastische Akkulaufzeit von über 10 Stunden mit dem 66 Wh Akku erzielt. Im normalen Betrieb sind 6 Stunden Autonomie erreichbar. Der Nachteil ist aber die geringe Performance gegenüber herkömmlichen Notebooks. Die Ausstattung mit 4 GB DDR3-1066 Speicher und 320 GB ist für eine Preisspanne von 650 - 800 EUR sehr gut.

Das X420 ist, zumindest leistungsmäßig, ein starkes Subnotebook (auch wenn im im 14"-Format): Durch seinen zwar stromsparenden, aber dennoch potenten Prozessor und die üppige Ausstattung mit Arbeitsspeicher ist es auch für anspruchsvollere Aufgaben als Textverarbeitung und Internet geeignet. Außerdem ist es ein Hingucker, weil die Oberflächen mit Metallic-Partikeln veredelt sind und Verarbeitung sehr gut gelungen ist.

Mit einem Passmarkrating von 523 Punkten ist dieses Subnotebook alles andere als lahm. Das Vergleichsmodell Samsung R560 Madril kommt mit dedizierter Grafiklösung auf 695 und ist in Spielen deutlich schneller. Dennoch sollte man sich vor Augen halten, dass im Anwendungsbereich Mobilität und Office, das X420 eindeutig vorzuziehen ist. Ein Acer Aspire R3600 Revo (Intel Atom N230) kommt auf 220 Punkte und ein Samsung NC-10 @nynet (Netbook) auf 256 Passmark Punkte.

Going by the number of slimline ultraportables around at the moment, Intel has really been pushing its Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage platform. That's no bad thing, since it allows the likes of Samsung's X420 to bridge the gap between the upper echelons of netbook society and expensive ultraportables. Samsung's X420 is slim, light and relatively inexpensive, but it's far from perfect.

The Samsung X120 ULV ultraportable was by far our favourite laptop of 2009, but not everyone wants something that’s quite so compact. So, if you don’t fancy squinting at an 11.6” screen, the X420 may be for you. It’s the next model up in Samsung’s X Series and while the specification is broadly similar to the X120, the X420 has a 14” screen and much better battery life. There’s a lot to like about the Samsung X420 and if you like the look of the X120, but worry about its small screen, this is an excellent — and almost as portable — alternative.

There's little to fault the X420 in terms of build quality and hardware. It's light, sexy and quite a performer. In retrospect, its glossy lid might be a haven for fingerprints, though it does lend a touch of class to its overall aesthetics compared to the prototype's matte cover. Also, the 16:9 screen is satisfactorily bright and sharp to suit your needs, whether it's for office applications or movie playback. Not to mention the notebook also comes with a HDMI port should you prefer to blow up your HD clips onto a larger screen or TV.

Our only qualm was that the built-in speakers are a little weedy. Still, there is an audio output socket so a pair of headphones or speakers can be connected. With all of the impressive credentials of the X420 we reckon Samsung has a winner on its hands.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
